Highest of all in Leavening Power.—Latest U. S. Gov’t Report.
Powder
ABSOLUTELY PURE
Pope Leo's Jubilee.—The Pope has
reached the fifteenth anniversary of Ids
Pope-hood. Thousands of pilgrims from
all parts of the world have made their
visits to Koine to offer their personal
congratulations, to tender their homage,
to kiss his hand, and to receive his ben
ediction.
I nmiue In Flnhuid In conscqueme
of the destructive frost of last summer a
famine prevails in Finland.
Thousands are reported dependent on
charity, while thousands more are barely
able to subsist.
They are forced to cat their draft ani
mals and their domestic pets.
Protest Against Home Rule Hill.—
The Grand Orange lodge of Belfaat, Ire
land has issued a strong protest against
the bill lately introduced into the British
Parliament setting forth the scheme for
home rule. The Ulstermen will declare
their opposition, formally, March 2nd.
They "ill accept reluctantly, complete
separation, but will resist, to the death, I
a combination of home, and imperial
rule.
Church glliscstablishmenf In Wales.
—Mr. Asquith, Home Secretary, intro
duced a bill in the House of Commons,
Feby. 23, looking to the disendowing
anil disestablishing the church in Wales.
The membership in the established
church in Wales includes less than one
fourth the population. At the last gen
eral election tho people distinctly
showed that they favored disestablish
ment, and lienee the liill proposing to
suspend the creation of a new interest.
The Panama Canal.— The President
of Columbia, in accordance with the au
thority vested in him by the Columbian
Congress has extended 1 he concession to
the Panama Canal Company for oho
month from Feby. 28th, 1893, when it
would otherwise expire. It is granted
to give those interested opportunity
to show their purpose and ability to
continue the work. If they do not do
So by the time specified, the Republic
of Columbia will take possession of the
property.
Anti-American Crusade.—“Cahonley
ism,” so called, represents an attempt
to use the power of the Romish church
to fasten a foreign language and foreign
ideas upon the United States. That is
to say, Congregations are to bo con
structed on lines of nationality, so as to
have German, Italian, French and other
churches, each using its native language
and customs. 'Die Pope lias pronoun
ced against tins policy, but it remains
to be seen to what extent the industri
ous efforts now being made by certain
Romish prelates to establish national
Churches will bo winked at.
Spain in a Ferment—. Just twenty
years ago, King Amadeus abdicated the
throne, ami old Spain was declared a
Ji. pnblii. But popular government in
a country w here nearly half the people
were unable to write their own names,
and where such a tiling as indipendoneo
of thought and free speech hud never
been known, was out of the question,
and as the Republic died alter a fretful
existence of a few months, leaving the
country none the better for the experi
ment. Order was restored witli the res
toration of the monarchy, and for about
nineteen years, Spain lias been in her
normal condition of decayed conserva
tism; but the Republifhns, taking ad
vantage of tlia infam y of the king, are
again agitating revolution. To prevent
tins, the police have broken upon pop
ular meetings and arrested some of the
agitators: but popular dissatisfaction is
spreading, and it is not. at all unlikely
that another reason of organized an
archy will lake place before the end of
the present year.
Theory anti Common Sense. The re
serve m the national Treasury is already
down to less than eight millions, This
is exclusive of the one hundred millions
set apart for the redemption of paper.
The drain is still going on with increas
ed rapidity. Meantime, the Govern
ment stands pledged to redeem all notes
in gold. What is going to become of
this pledg. when the gold reserve in tlio
Treasury vanishes altogether. Shull the
Government go into the market as a
purchaser of gold w ith which to redeem
its pledge ? But the g<dd, or most of it
is already in Europe: and the condition
of Europe Issued as to eniiso gold to |bo
hoarded, even at a premium. A general
European war is likely to break out at
almost any time; and the only thing
which hard pressed nations can rely up
on to pay debts and war expenses is
gold. Hence the hoarding. If the Gov
ernment pays a premium on gold with
which to fulfill out-standing pledges,
down goes silver. If it repudiates its
oblltion by paying in silver, down goes
Government credit. The situation is an
awkward one, brought about by unwise
legislation, but it is now “a condition
and not a theory.’’
Church Trouble in Russia The com
mission appointed by the Russian Gov
ernment, some weeks ago to devise a
plan for the Government of the Protest
ant church, and for adjusting its rela
tions with the State, has made its re
port. If the Czar approves this report,
which however seems doubtful, it will
deprive the Protestant church of its au
tonomy. In this connection, the min
istry of the interior has taken steps to
wards a reorganization of the manage
ment of the Roman Catholic church,
whereby it is proposed to put it under
tlie entire centred of the State. The
Government seems equally determined
to lay its iron hand upon tlio great uni
versity of Durpat. A chair of Greek Or
thodox Theology has been established
therein and the chair tilled by an eccle
siastic subservient to the civil author
ities. Meantime, another Protestant
clergyman has been put in jail. Ills of
fense was marying a couple claimed by
the Orthodox church. Very soon there
■will be little left of the little religious
freedom that once existed in that des
potic country.

Slightly Inaccurate.—“ The supply o
wood as fuel is fast, being consumed;
the coal-beds will shortly be exhausted
High up in the heavens a blazing world
of fire pours each day great waves of
heat upon the earth. Countless tons of
burning coal could not perform this
task of the sun. Not one atom of this
heat, is yet utilized by the skill of man.”
—Watchman.
There lias been no direct utilization of
this force, but its indirect use in me
chanical appliances is seen everywhere.
The force impelling the locomotive, em
anated from the sun. We go back of
the motion of the piston to the evapora
tion of water; thence to the heat evol
ved during the oxidation of coal; thence
to the assimilation of carbon by the
plants of whoso embedded remains coal
consists; thence to the carbonic acid
from whence their carbon was obtained;
thence to ’the rays of light that de-ox
idized this carbonic acid; and thence to
the solar heat. The force expended by
the horse harnessed to the plow, ami al
so by the laborer guiding it, is derived
from the same reservoir of heat as the
wind currents which impel sailing ves
sels and the falling cataracts which im
pel our mills anil factories, Given the
sun as the source of all heat and light—
and physical science knows no other—
we are obliged to admit that many atoms
of this heat has been utilized from time
immemo.iial.

Ci :i»ahtown. —We are rejoicing in the
midst of a glorious meeting in Cedar
town. Already fifty-two have been
added to the church, and many more
will soon come in. Wo are all very hap
py, The congregations pack the house
every night, the aisles are tilled, and
many have to stand around the doors
mid sides of the house.
The pastors of the.other churches are
nobly co-operating with us, and many
of their people have been converted.
The meeting will go on through next
week. Let all tho people pray for
us.
Cedartown has been cold for a long
time, and the standard of Christian living
has been low. But the members of all
tho church es are moving up to get ona
higher plane. Large us the numbers of
conversions is up to date tho groat, mat
ter of gratitude is the awakening of
Christians, They are mightily renewed
and refreshed, and have gone
forth to work.
Wo are grateful, but our desires are
enlarged, we want larger blessings.

PERHAPS YOU HAVE
Catarrhal Dyspepsia —You
CAN TELL BY READING Tllß
FOLLOWING SYMPTOMS.
Tho symptoms of catbarrhal dys
pepsia are Coated tongue, pain or
heavy feeling in the stomach, sour
stomach, belching of gas, dizzy head
loss of appetite, palpitaion of heart
and irregularity of the bowels.
For this con<litio|t I’o-ru-an is
found to be an admjrajile remedy.
In all cases it brings prompt relief
to tho painful symptoms, and in a
large per cent of the cases it makes
a permanent cure. l’o-ru-na soothes
the inflamed mucus surface,and thus
strikes at the root of the disease. In
cases where the inflammation has
been so severe and continued as to
produce extreme irritability of the
stomaeh, the pemedy may be taken
in small doses at first, diluted fi
water; but, as soon as the improve
ment is sufficient to permit the full
dose to be taken undiluted,it is tho
better way,and the cure is more rap
id. I’erti-na is also a winter medicine
which at once removes the cause of
all affections peculiar to tho winter
season by purifying tho blood of all
contaminatfons, and invigorating the
whole system.
A medical book entitled “The

forth clearly the cause, prevention
and cure of coughs, la grip.pe, con

ATLANTA TROUBLES.
For more than a month Atlanta
has been startled by unusal events
in its business and social circles.
Shocking suicides and bloody mur
ders, have darkened her hitherto
bright history.
These fearful deeds have been
perpetrated, not, mainly by people
in the lower walks of life, but among
the intelligent, cultivated and weal
thy classes.
The hearts of fathers and mothers
of brothers and sisters, of relatives
and friends,havebeen cruellycrushed,
and their heads bowed in sorrow
and in shame.
The failure of a leading bank be
cause of the apparent defalcation of
its assistant cashier, amounting to
#70,000, has caused a profound sen
setion in business circles.
These events have followed in
such rapid succession, have been of
such a startling, distressing charac
ter, that the people of Atlanta have
been fairly stunned, and stand in
mute amazement, wondering; what
calamity will overtake them next.
The causes producing these results
have been in operation for a consid
erable time. The effects have been
sudden and surprising. Liquor, fast
living, extravagance, jealousy, and»
maybe, insanity, are the main caus
es.
Perhaps Atlanta has been too
proud of her growth, too boastful of
her enterprise, too eager to extend her
dimensions, and to increase her pop
ulation.
Perhaps her people have been too
eager in their pursuit of wealth, too
much devoted to the demands of so
called “Society,” too much given to
frivolity, and debasing pleasures.
Perhaps her luxurious homes, and
indulgence in ease, have led to mor
al indifference, and insensibility.
Perhaps all these causes, and oth
ers that lie nearer the foundations of
social life, have conspired to produce
such direful disasters.
Certain it is, that tho time has
come for her people to stop and con
sider, and for the city to cloth itself
in sack-cloth, to cover its head with
ashes, to humble itself and repent
before God, les?worse things befall
her. K -

Make the churches cheerful
—There is nothing that adds more
to the popularity and prosperity of a
church than cheerfulness, and there
is nothing more conducive to cheer
fulness than a good light. With the
improved methods now in vogue
there is no reason why every church
hould not be as bright by night
as by day with but very little cost
The best aid to the economical light
of churches, halls, and large rooms
is the “Baily Reflector.” This ingen
ious device is so constructed that i
diffuses light into the farthest cor
ners of a church, and makes the
finest print readable. All ministers or
those interested should write to the
manufacturers for catalogue and
price, list. Their address is Bailey
Reflector Co. 708 Penn Av. Pitts

DR.WILBOR’S
COMPOUND OF
PURE COD LIVER OIL
WITH PHOSPHATES.
Dr. Wilbor’s Cod-Liver Oil and
Phosphates has now been before the
public forty years, and has steadily
grown in’favor and appreciation,
This could not be the case unless the
preparation was of high instrinsic val
ue. The combination of the phosphates
with pure Cod Liver oil, as prepared
by Dr. Wilbor, has produced a new,
phase in the treatment of consumption
and all diseases of the lungs. This
article can be taken by the most deli
cate invalid without creating the dis
gusting nausea which is such an ob
jection to the Cod-Liver Oil when
taken without the phosphates. It is
prescribed by the regular faculty. Dr.
Wilbor’s Emulsion cures consumption,
coughs, colds, bronchitis, debility,
wasting diseases, asthma, influenza,
scrofulous humors, pneumonia. Sold
by all druggists.
