Two Stepping Stones
to consumption are ailments le
■ often deem trivial —a cold and
> a cough. Consumption thus ac
quired is rightly termed “ Con
sumption from neglect.”
Scott’s Emulsion
not only stops a cold but it is re
markably successful where the
cough has become deep seated.
Scott's Emulsion is the
richest of fat-foods yet
the easiest fat-food to
take. It arrests waste
and builds up healthy
flesh. '

PEARSON.—After a gradual de
cline of health for more than two
years, on the morning of Oct. 15,
1893, Mrs. Mary Pearson, wife of
Lawrence Pearson, was suddenly
taken ill and after lingering for five
days, Thursday night,Oc*. 19th, just
12 o’clock, surrounded by husband
and children, relatives and friends,
calmly and peacefully as if into a
natural slumber, she sleeps the sleep
that knows no waking and enters the
rest that remaineth for the people of
God. She was 54 years old. Joined
the Baptist church at the age of four
teen and for forty years lived a con
secrated Christian life. She was
always, even at the time of her death,
considered one of the strongest pill
ars of the church. She was laid to
rest in the cemetery at Providence,
the place where she joined the
church and where her membership
! was at the time of her death. The
services were conducted by Rev. J.
I. Lemon. IL Cor. 5, 1-12.
as a wife and mother she was af
fectionate and kind; as a friend faith
| ful and true. As a Christian never
negligent of her duty, and always
anxious to work for the Master.
She was loved by all who knew her.
■ She leaves a husband and fivecbild
• ren, the youngest sixteen years old.
May lie who doeth all things in
wisdom comfort the bereaved ones.
'Tis finished! Ves, the tick is done,
The Battle fought, the vict’ry won ;
Thy toils are o er. thou art gone to rest,

WREN.—Sister Katie Wren was
born in Jefferson county, Ga., Dec.
13tb, 1807, and departed this life
l Nov. Ist, 1893. She connected her
self with the Baptist church at Ways
i in 1834, and lived a consistent and
honored member of said church for
over a half century. During this
i long membership she fully exempli-
I tied a strong faith in Christ by an
upright walk and godly conversation.
We deeply mourn the loss of our
| aged sister and her pious example,
I but are willing to bow submissively
to the will of Providence who doeth
all things well.

I conference, Jan. 7th, 1894.

JACKSON.— Sister Malissa Jack-
I son, wife of deacon Aaron Jackson,
I died at her home near Barnett, Ga.,
Jan. 14, 1894. Sister Jackson was
60 years old when she died and had
been a cosistent member of Barnett
Baptist church for some years. She
joined the church soon after the war
and to the day of her death she was
a model wife, mother and neigh
bor. Sister Jackson’s call from this
world was sudden, but she under-
I stood the scriptural injunction, “Be
I ye also ready for in such an hour as
| ye think not the son of man cometh.”
| The aged husband and the children
I left behind have our *sincere sympa
thy in this their bereavment.

DICKINSI >N.—Died near Thom
! aston, Ga., Tuesday, January 9tb,
| sister Arminta Dickinson, wife of
I Robert Dickinson, of Upson county.
Sister Dickinson was born April
IBth, 1848. She professed religion
i while yet in her girlhood, and was
| hurried with Christ in baptism in
about her sixteenth year. She united
with the church in Thomaston by let
ter in 1885, from which time she
has been a member of this church.

A USEFUL BABY.
; Not long ago, a missionary on the
great river Congo had pushed up on
a little steamer into a part where no
white man had ever been before.
The anchor was let down and the
steamer brought “to.” Food was
needed for the men and firewood for
the ergines. The natives came
crowding down to the bank to look
at this wonderful boat, they were
armed with arrows and big ugly
spears. The missionary tried to talk
to them, and made signs of peace.
But nothing that he could do seemed
to touch them; it was plain that they
were partly angry, partly suspicious,
| and partly afraid, and when savages
are in that state they are very dang
j erous. What was to be done?
A happy thought flashed across the
missionary. He had a wife and a
dear little baby on board. He got
the baby, took it up in his arms, and
showed it to the people. Now the
baby was a really sensible one; it
i seemed to understand the situation,
and instead of crying or pretending
to be shy, it laughed and crowed as
merrily as could be; and when the
poor savages saw it they felt safe;
they understood in a moment that no
harm was meant, and so they laid
down their arms and became quite
friendly. Even in Africa we can
say, “A little child shall lead them.”

THE CHRISTIAN INDEX: THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 1894.
WHAT TO HEAD.
If you are down with the blues,
read the twenty-seventh Psalm.
If there is a chilly sensation about
the heart, read the third chapter of
Revelation.
If you don’t know whore to look
for the months’s rent, read the thir
ty-seventh Psalm.
If you feel lonesome and unpro
tected, read the ninety-first Psalm.
If the stovepipe has fallen down,
and cook gone off in a pet, put up
the pipe, wash your hands, and read
the third chapter of James.
If you find yourself losing confi
dence in men, read the thirteenth
chapter of First Corinthians.
If people pelt you with hard
words, read the fifteenth chapter of
John.
If you are all out of sorts, read the
twelfth chapter of Hebrews.—The
Bible Reader.
Hiniiereks.—A while ago we
heard a speaker compare hinderers
to boys standing along the line where
their fellows were playing leap frog
and putting out their feet to trip the
others as they ran and jumped.
They 7 would not play themselves,
and they would not suffer their fel
lows to play. All thoir attention
was given to hindering and none to
helping.
In our churches and Sunday
schools what a lot of people there
are who are just like these boys.
Others are trying to work, and would
get on very well, if left alone. But
these hinderers will not let them
alone. They will do nothing them
selves, but are angry to see the work
being dene without them. So their
whole ambition seems to be to pit
themselves in the way. For such
people there should be no excuse.
They are veritable dogs in the man
ger, neither willing to eat themselves,
nor that anybody else should eat.
If there is anybody who ought to
hide his face in shame, it is one of
this class. If we cannot help, let us
at least not hinder.
How to Snow Love.—Though
we cannot do anything to deserve
salvation, we cannot do too much to
show our love to him who saved us.
“If ye love me, keep my command
ments,” are our Lord’s words to those
for whom he died. Surely we ought
to serve God, and to serve him with
all our heart, since he had had mercy
upon us, and given his dear Son to
die for us.
We are to be forgiven because we
trust in Christ, and we are to serve
God, not that we may be forgiven,
but because we are forgiven. God’s
free salvation is not to excuse us
from his service, but to make us
serve him better. If all our hearts
are his, all our lives will be his too.
Rev. Sydney Smith, the editor of
the Edinburg Review, made merry
in the dignified pages of that peri
odical over the attempt “to convert
sixty millions of Hindus by means of
four men and sixteen guineas,” and
especially poured the vials of his
scorn upon “brother Carey, the con-_
secrated cobbler,” for the madness of
his missionary enthusiasm. It is
true that the father of modern mis
sions was brought up to the trade of
a shoemaker, but it is also true that
he' translated the Scriptures into
twenty-three of the languages of In
dia, and rendered the word of God
accessible to over three hundred
millions of human beinps, or nearly
one fourth of the population of the
globe.
Christ and the Law.—As the
Rosetta Stone was the key that un
locked the treasures of the Egyp
tian hieroglyphics, so Christ is the
key that opens to our gaze the inter
pretation of the sacred symbols con
tained in the ceremonial law, and
the true hieroglyphics of the penta
teuch. The transfiguration of our
Lord Jesus showed the disciples the
real harmony and unity of the old
and new dispensations, how the gos
pel was fulfilment of the law and the
prophets, how the new kingdom was
the flower and fruit growing on
the old tree—The Worker.

The Truth.—The landscape does
not move when the driving rain like
a cloud hides it; the. mountains do
not stir from their everlasting base
when night enfolds them; the love
that is yours is as constant in ab
sence as in presence. The truth may
for a moment have eluded your vis
ion, but it is there, and when you
have learned the lesson, and borne
the discipline, and let patience have
her perfect work, you will see it and
rejo’ce. We never value things so
much as when we have felt the
dreariness of their anticipated lose.
