CAPTURE OF THE CHESAPEAKE.
The captare of this ship by the English fri
gate Shannon was mainly owing to a bugle-
man’s desertion of his quarters. Notwith-
standing the fall of Capt. Lawrence and the
principle officers of the Chesapeake early in
the action, had the buglcman whose duty it
was to call the boarders, sounded his horn
when ordered, the crew would have prompt-
ly repaired to the deck, and the issue of the
engagement been in all probability turned dif.
ferent. As it was, the usual signal was not
sounded that the enemy were boarding, and
when some midshipman ran below to pass the
word, the seamen knew not what was meant,
were thrown into confusion and abandoned
their quarters.
Previous to the two ships falling foul of
each other, the fire of the Chesapeake made
unexampled destruction on board the Shan
non. All the damage that the enemy recei
ved was before they boarded. In the short
rpace of eight minutes, the Shannon was so
cut up in her hull by the Chesapeake’s broad
sides that it was with difficulty they kept her
afloat during the night, and she had 88 of her
crew killed and wounded, while the Chesa
peake was comparatively uninjured.
The Chesapeake was rated as a 36 gun
frigate, but mounted 49—the Shannon mount,
cd 52 carriage guns and had a picked crew
of400 men. The seamen of the Chesapeake
were fresh recruits, and little or no opportu
nity had been afforded to exercise and disci-
pline them.
It was on the morning of the first day of
June that the Shannon appeared off our har
bor and tauntingly displayed her colors. The
Chesapeake was lying at anchor below Fort
Independence. As soon, as tkc enemy’s flag
was seen, she fired a gun and run up the
American flag. Preparation was at once
made for sailing, and when the tide served
she got under weigh. The Shannon stood
immediately down the bay, followed by the
Chesapeake under press of sail.'
Every elevated spot in Boston which com-
manded a view of the sea, was crowned with
anxious spectators. But the ships proceed
ed so far to the eastward that the conflict
could not be seen. A large number of boats
sailed out to witness the result, and brought
back the melancholy tidings that when the
smoke of the cannonade had dispersed the
English, colors were seen flying on board the
Chesapeake and soon after, both vessels
standing towards Halifax. The suspense
that ensued for more than a fortnight was
painful in the extreme. The fate of no one
was known, though it was generally anticipa
ted from the intrepid character of Captain
Lawrence that he had fallen a martyr to his
c >untry.
Capt. Lawrence was first wounded in the
leg, but he refused to he carried below until
he was mortally wounded by a grape shot.
He continued, however, to* issue his orders
from the cock pit; “ fight her till she sinks—
keep the guns agoing” and when told that the
enemy had carried the upper deck, he sent
that memorable message ** dont give up the
ship.” When apprised of the unhappy issue,
he exclaimed “ the Shannon was whipt when
I left.”
this is called shopping. It is shopping, with
a vengeance. I wish these pretty women
would find some better employment, than to
go the rounds regularly every pleasant day,
to exhibit their charming persons, and tire
out the patience of the shopkeepers. They
will not trouble me again very soon, however.

thank you to pass the sugar, you did’nt give
me but one lump.”
“ Well, Mr. Snooks, 1 declare you use su
gar enough in your tea to sweeten a hogs-
head of vinegar. James keep your fingers
out of the sweatmeat; Susan keep still bawl,
ing. I declare its enough to set one distrac
ted—there take that you little wretch.”
« Why, Harriet, what has the child <lone ?
I declare you arc too hasty.”
“I wis* Mr. Snooks, you would mind your
own business, you’re always meddling with
what does’nox concern you,”
« Well Mrs. Snooks, I want to know who
has a better right if I have not—you’re al
ways fretting and fuming about nothing.”
“ Pa. Thomas is tearing your newspaper
all up.”
« Thomas come here, how dare you abuse
my paper, I’ll leach you to tear it again;
there sir, how does that feel—now go to

“ Mr. Snooks you .horrid wretch—how
can you strike a child of mine in that way
come here Thomas, poor fellow—did he get
hurt—never mind—here’s a lump of sugar;
there that’s a good boy.”
“ Mrs. Snooks, let me tell you, you will
spoil all the children, you know I never inter,
lere when you see fit to punish a child—its
strange that a woman can never do any thing
right.”
“ Never do any thing right—faith, Mr.
Snooks, if nobody did any thing right in this
house but yourself, I wonder what would be
come of us.”
“ Let me tell you, madam, this is improper
language for you ma’am—and I’ll bear it no
longer. You arc as snappish and surly as
a—a—she dog—and if there is a divorce to
be had in the land I’ll have it—you would
wear out the patience of a Job.”
«Oh! dear, how mad the poor man is—
well good night my dear—pleasant dreams.”
«« There, she’s gone. Thank heaven I’m

Jeweller.—I am desirous of securing your
