■ i VOL. II. “The fcrnkent of a free, Is preferable to the torpor of a despotic, Government.” ATHENS, GEORGIA, OCTOBER 12, 1833. NO. 30. j&tsceUaug, From the Chairleiton Courier, THE VOW—(An original Tale.) BY MISS PF.NINA MOISE. A beautiful bright afternoon in October bad been selected tor the launch of a stately vessel and amid the acclamation of an admi ring multitude the Clara Conway darted from lier stocks, like a spirited belle on her first -debut. The commotion had subsided the day bad departed, and with it the crowd ol spectators, whose reiterated shouts of “ God •speed the Clara Conway /” still echoed in the ear of a veteran, who lingered near the launch absorbed in motcly speculations. “ Ay! (■oil speed her !” repeated he—and then as if lollowing the current of his thoughts, added —“ -see with what majestic serenity she re- poses in the moonlight 1 Neptune seems en chanted with the novice, and is wooing her in a tremulous whisper, as I suppose some Sea-God is now doing to her sweet name-sake, bless her. Well,” continued he, turning the quid rapidly in his mouth, from side to side, “ well they’re a pair of noble creatures ; I wqudcr which of them will keep her course the best ? The fair young thing just launched upon the stream of fashion, or the fine ocean flower whose stem hiis freshly sprung upon the wf .Id of waters.” “ I wish you much joy Capt. Conway,” said graceful a young West Indian, extending his hand towards the grave soliloquist. “ Your two Claras engross general admiration to-night.” Thunk you Frank Belmont, but what has brought' you from Conway House ?” “ The command of its reigning divinity,” answered he gaily. “ She commissions me to tell you, that un less you repair forthwith to the festal scene, she will grow excessively jealous of he r ma rine sister.” Tne old man turned to obey the summons, but appeared unusually dispiri ted and abstracted while his companion rat tled ou, in the most extravagant spirits. « You are vastly gay to night, Frank, consid ering how soon you are to leave home on your first adventure.” ** Why, my dear sir, will not the wooden walls of your favorite af- forJ me ns comfortable an abiding place as heart could desire ? Besides, you know I am to be a cosmopolitan, aud will, therefore, cher ish no local predilections.” “ But,” returned the Captain, “ I thought it only natural that you should feel sonic little regret at parting from Clara, whose mother trained you to nmnhood, and for whom you once professed a brotherly fondness, though of late you have indeed appeared most unac countably estranged.” It was now Belmont’s turn to become abstracted, and he walked on ns moodily as if he leaden wand of dullness had suddenly transformed him to a mute. Not another word wad exchanged between them until they entered the house. It was indeed a fairy revel ; Clara had attired her I self to represent night. She wore a deep I blue robe embossed wiih slurs of gold. This was draped by black gauze of such delicate texture, that you might have thought some frolic sprite had left a mist upon the loom, in which it had been wrought. A golden crescent spanned the space between her tem ples. Some of the naval officers present had proposed a wreath dance, and after per forming a few fantastic evolutions, they had linked the garlands together so as to form a •ship, in the centre of which stood. Clara, the radiant personification of night. On the en trance of her father she attempted to advance towards him, but found herself so entangled in the flowery toils, that she could not extri cate herself without the assistance of those who had entwined them. She looked be seechingly at cacli of them in turn, but they only enjoyed her perplexity, and refused for some minutes to release her. What was there, in this simple freak, that could occa- sion Frank Belmont to compress his lips with so much violence, that a blood-drop fell unmarked by him upon the little ivory anchor which in common with the rest of the mule part of the company, had been assumed as a badge for that evening. This intensity of emotion at a trifle, must be referred to the most powerful of all human passions operating upon a tropical tempera ment. The Othello had been stirred within his bosom, by remarking with what peculiar animation Clara had appealed to Lieutenant AUudstane for her emancipation. This gif ted son of Thetis was indeed an acknowl edged star. Nature appeared to have done for him, what the Grecian Artist had for He len. She had assembled the graces and made them tributary to his perfection. There was an elegant suavity of manner—an inimi table grace of movement that rendered him irresistibly prepossessing. In Frank only had it produced an opposite effect; fox not withstanding tho extreme affability exercised by that officer, in his intercourse with this ir ritable young man, he bad conceived an in vincible prejudice against him. The blush ing captive addressed herself a second time to the Lieutenant, and challenged him by all that was courteous and knightly to assist her in escaping from the magic maze. « Lady,” said he, bowing gracefully, “we boast no Bedford power of warring against witchery as far as I am concerned you are as free as air.” Dropping that link of the verdant labyrinth, he had till then supported, he led her,; to her father, who, laughing hear, tily, said he was just considering whether he should not send a West India reefer to her rescue. This remark attracted attention to. wards Frank, when Lieut. Athelstane sud. deply exclaimed-**/ Bless me Belmont! are your lips distilling rubies, oris that strange J —she looked fearfully around, as if dreading I ingso eternally blighted as the ill-fated Clara.” I and so they blackguard him and throw dirt) eluding paragraph of his Veto Message.
