PROSPECTUS
OP T1IE
Standard of Union
AND
FREE TRADE ADVOCATE.
i HE extensive patronage bestowed by our fellow.
**- citizens upon the Standard of Union, assures
ns that wo havo not labored in vain ; and the dcsira
so generally expressed by its friends, to see it placed
in a position where its advantages of information and
increased circulation would be more certainly united,
we have determined to remove it to Milled jeriile,
where its Editorial columns will continue to lie cor.,
ducted by its former Editor, Thomas Haynes, Ecq.
The principles which it has heretofore advocate’, I
it shall continue to maintain, with iucrease-.l energj. |
. It shall be the Standard of Union—It shall su;. !
port and defend “the Union of all the States" usths j
only means of preserving “ the sovereignty aud in
dependence of each."
It shall be a free press, and will speak of men,
measures and parties with becoming freedom.
It will continue, as it has done, to inrulcito those
great and wholesome truths upon which our father*
so firmly asserted and so gallantly maintained the
sovereignty, the Union, and independence of the
United States.
We shall, at the same time, oppose any and every
abuse and usurpation of power by the Federal Gov
ernment, by all constitutional means; and as zealous-
ly oppose all risli and reckless movements by States
calculated to jeopardize the harmony of our Mossed
Union, “ until the accumulation of oppression, shall
outweigh the evils of separation.”
We believe man- is capable of self-government,
■ ami we will not be instrumental in arresting the ex-
pcrimcnl now in pvogress, by which alone this great
problem con be solved ; because we desire to soo the
principles of tho American Revolution acted out,
tliat tho world may know, whether mankind arc wor
thy the blessings of liberty •and independence, or
whether from their own Weakness and folly, they arc
the natural subjects of anarchy end despotism.
We have too much confidence in tho wisdom and
firmness of our institutions, in the patriotism and in
telligence of the people,to question tho final and glo
rious triumph of republican goverr merit over aU
ethers. -
The present aspect of affairs in Georgia, demands
the active service of every friend of the Union. The
disorganizing doctrine of Nullification, is al thri mo-
ment, menacing tho foundations of our government,
and if suffered to triumph, will destroy the fairest fab
ric of liberty, which was ever erected by the wisdom
of man.
It shall bo pur business, as it has been-through our
briif career, to strip it of its gaudy and alluring deco
rations, and hold it up to the public gaze, deformed
and loathsome as it is.
As it regards men, wo shall judge them by their
acts, and speak of them as we think. For one, w*
shall stick to old Hickory, until he commits some
more damning act, than preserving this Union from
tho rain and desolation meditated against it by “ Jobs
Caldwell Calhoun” and his minions; nor shall we
abuse him for a tyrant and despot until wo shall have
rendered about as much service to our country u he
has done.
The compromise tariff act of 1833, shall continue
to meet our most untiring and vindictive oppoeitioB' |
We consider it tho result of a corrupt combination j
for solfish purposes alone, and that it is tho com- 8
mcnccmcnt of a system of measures intended finally
to release every article of luxury entirely from taxa
tion, and thereby to throw the wholo burden of te
revenue upon articles of prime necessity.
For the spirit and ability with which we shall at
tack tho principles of our adversaries and defend our
own, we must refer our readers to the Standard from
its commencement to tho present; with the farther
assurance, that we feel an additional motive to W'
crease our energies; from-the very kind and indob
gent manner in which our feeble efforts, in a go®“|
cause, have been regarded by a largo portion of our
fellow-citizens.
As soon as now materials can bo obtained, tho pa
per will be enlarged, and every exertion made to ren
der it an interesting and valuable Journal- In
mean time, we l»eg our patrons to bear with the 8^
of our sheet, keeping this truth in constant rom
branco, that a little of a good thing »* better than
great deal of a bad one.
In the patronage which we seek, in tho P r0 ' c _
tion of our labors, wo look to the Union party a 0 '
If it does not support us we must sink by the way >
for Wo claim no kindred with nullification, and its
tarics feci no sympathies for ns. •* - . ..
