However patriotism might prompt us to aid a suffering people, themselves engaged in redressing their wrongs, no such principle can l»e recognized as operating upon the minds of those four citizens, who have recently made several unsuccessful efforts to invade Cmia- diao territory, and we are therefore gratified to learn that in every instance they have been repulsed. for several dnvs previous to the first of March, troops were collecting upon the bor ders of Lower Canada, and on the last day of February they organized and crossed the line, under the command of Doctors Nelson and Cote. They soon discovered, however, that the Rmalist forces were superior to their own, and consequently retreated on the nex’ dav, without hazarding a battle. Meantime. (Jon. Wool had prepired himself to receive tiiern on their return, and recovered a large, quantity of arms, besides taking their leaders prisoners. Similar disasters have attended tlie Navy Islanders in an attempt upon Upper Canada, near Detroit. While the Canadians themseives were strug gling for relief from the oppressions of their Government, we could not but feel sympathy for their misfortunes, and entertain wishes for their success. But they have abandoned the enterprise ; and the only forces for some time in arms against, the Canadian Government, have been citizens of the United States.— friends of the grea’ compromiser, for acting without instructions. He must back ou however, upon the best terms he cun, and promise hereafter lo exercise more circum spection.
