PROPOSALS
FOE PRINTING BY SUBSCRIPTION A FULL REPORT OF THE
Geological and Agricultural Survey
OF THE
STATE OF GEORGIA.
T HE Legislature, at their last session, deemed it
expedient to discontinue the salary of the State
Geologist, in consequence o! the embarrassed finan
ces of the State. By this unexpected movement, the
subscriber is deprived of the means of completing the
survey of the State, on the original plan : if done at
all, it must be at individual risk and expense.
It is needless, perhaps, to represent to the enlight
ened citizens of Georgia, that by following out the
plan so happily commenced in 1837, and pursued with
unremitted energy to the present, the State has been
contributing her mite, humble as it may be on the part
of her agent, to the cause of general science in our
country, and the advancement of intellectual improve
ment among her citizens, in accordance with othor
States of the Union. There is but one alternative.—
In the present situation of the survey, the work must
either be abandoned and the important information ob
tained by four years investigation of the Geology of
the State, lost to her citizens, or the subscriber must
depend for support, on individual patronage. He is
determined to make an effort for the benefit and hon
or of his adopted State, to proceed with the survey.
From former experience of the unbounded liberality
and generous hospitality of his fellow citizens, indif
ferent parts of the Slate, he is confident that, in ma
king an appoal to their sympathy and patronage, it will
not be made in vain.
That a complete survey may be made -of the re
maining counties of the State, and the whole consoli
dated and published for the information and benefit of
the citizens, public patronage is most respecfully soli
cited. A work of this kind, is much needed in Geor
gia, a State comprising an area of sixty thousand square
miles, being destitute of a single correct Map, Geogra
phy, or history of the same. A majority of the citi
zens must, from necessity, be unacquainted with the
rich mineral resources and agricultural capacities of
the different sections. Favored as the subscriber has
been, by four years labor, as State Geologist, in differ
ent parts of the State, in collecting materials for a com
plete report of an Agricultural and Geological survey
and Natural History, he trusts that he shall be able to
meet the approbation of his fellow citizens.
The subscriber pledges his honor, that the proceeds
arising from subscription lor the work, shall be appro
priated to the completion of the survey of the remain
ing counties of the State, and that they shall be finish
ed as they will be needed for publication.
JOHN RUGGLE8 COTTING,
State Geologist.
Millcdgeville, January 1, 1841.
N. .B. It is impossible, at this time, to designate th*
number of volumes in a set.
CONDITIONS.
1. The work shall be printed in royal octavo form,
on fine paper and with new type, and will contain
complete reports of a Geological and Agricultural Sur
vey of every County in the State, with a Map of the
same, Drawings of remarkable places, sections. &c..,
together with an account of the Natural History, Bota
ny and Agricultural statistics.
2. The first volume will contain a system of Agri
culture adapted to the soils and climate of the South,
with a table of analysis of soils from different coun
ties, and remarks on their improvement; with other
useful agricultural tables. Also, a complete Glossary
of Geological and Agricultural terms.
3. Each volume shall contain 600 pages, in cloth
binding, at S3 50 per volume, to subscribers; to non-
subscribers, 84 00, payable on delivery.
4. The prinring shall be so arranged, that a volume
may be expected during the session of the Legislature,
in each year, until the whole set is completed.
5. Should there be sufficient patronage, a large
Geological and Agricultural Map of the State, will be
constructed, (»by 4 feet; on which in addition to Geo
graphical delineations usually on Maps, all the Geolo
gical and Agricultural features of the State shall be
accurately sketched and colored. Price on Rollers,

SHE FUTURE.
A N ^W weekly paper on a large and fair imperial
sheet, will be published (should sufficient en
couragement be given) every Saturday morning at Not.
30 Ann-st. New-York.
‘The Future* will be devoted to the freest and ful
lest discussion of ail Philosophical Truth, to the in
culcation and difiusion of Practical Philanthropy, to
tho faithtul chronicling of all important advances in
Philosophy, Science and Arts, and to the advocacy
and dissemination of whatever shall seem calculated
to promote the Progress of tho Human Race through
Knowledge and Virtue to Universal Happiness.
It will labor to deserve the confidence and support
of the friends of Humanity and of Social Progress uni
versally, without respect to creed, country, or condi
tion.
The primary, positive and definite object of its la-
bors will be to show that Human Happiness may bo
promoted, Knowledge and Virtue increased, Vice,
Misery, Waste and Want infinitely diminished, by a
Reorganizati in of Society upon the principle of Asso-
ciation, or a community of effort, instead of the pro-
sent mode of isolated households, discordant interest*
and conflicting efforts. This doctrine will be fully
explained and defended, and every objection toils ef
ficacy and practicability fairly met and fully obviated.
The Future will be afforded to ycarlv subscribers
at $3 per annum, $5 for two copies, 820 lor ten co
pies, payable on the delivery of the second number.

six cents each, twenty for $1, $4 per hundred, or in

IIE season of prolonged and intense political ex
citement having passed, leaving in its stead e
serene and profound tranquillity, it is but rcasonabal
to hope that a share of lire public attention and inter
est, which have been engrossed by I’oli'ics, will hence
forth be diverted to the more flowery oaths of Litera
ture and Intellectual Improvement. Especially du
ring the more inclement portion of the year, may we
expect that reading,of an elevated and instructive cha
racter, will attract the regard cf greater numbers than
formerly. The publishers of The New-Yorker, thcro-
fore, beg leave to submit to the Public a statement of
some of the grounds on which they claim tor their pa
per the favor and patronage of the more intellectual
portion of the community. They are as follows :
I. The New-Yorker is devoted, more considerably
than any other Literary Journal, to scientific an. 1 , use
ful intelligence. All new discoveries in Science or
Art, all movements tending to improve the condition
of Man. mentally, morally, and phy sically, are eagerly
chronicled in its columns.
II. The Editor will labor, with whatever cnergisi
he possesses, to advance the cause of Morality, and of
Social well-being. No article oflicentious or immoral
tendency is allowed a place in its columns.
III. Although The New-Yorker takes no part in po
litical contests, yet all Political Intelligence of interest
is carefully, impartially, and lucidly presented in it*
columns. The results cf all the Elections arc espe
cially stated with great care- and fidelity. It is be
lieved that in this respect no paper enjoys, or has la
bored to obtain, a higher reputation than this.
IV. In its Literary Contents, while efforts are made
to minister acceptably to all tastes, hut those oi the
impure and vicious, Utility will be regarded asinor*
important than mere Amusement, or the captivation of
barren minds. Tales, Poems, Reviews, and Essays,
will be judiciously intermingled ia its columns, but no
works of fiction will be allowed a place, except such
as scent calculated to exalt the intellect or amend the
heart.
V. Although the New-Yorker is printed on a large
imperial sheet it is not so large that a man cannot hold
it in his hands, or find time in the course of a week to
peruse it tnorouginy. We deem this a merit.
VI. It is not filled up with long stories continued
from week to week. ‘ Master Humphrey’s Clock, is
the only continuous essay now presented in its co
lumns.
VII. It is the cheapest literary paper printed week
ly in the Northern States.
Friends of a pure and beneficent Literature! we so
licit your countenance and support!
Conditions.—The New-Yorker, Folio, or ccrnrnon
newspaper form, is published every Saturday at V\ 0
DOLLARS per annum in advance, fcix c.cptcs will
be sent for Ten Dollars; ten copies for Fittcsn Dol
lars, in advance, and any larger number in the latter
proportion. ,

fine paper, without Advertisements, and with a p>E e
of Popular Music in each number. It forms 10 p a ? M
per number, or two volumes of 41C pages each,
annum; (three wide columns to a page) cud isaffortt-
