Paris, it is said, has 100,000 convict#—persona

transportation were abolished, London would in
a like manner be overrun with convicts.
Some anonyimas writer pithily remarks, that

engine; and if every body were radical.it would
be like a trian of engines without cars, running

. Athens;
The following extract from a loiter
by a correspondent of the Philadelphia
Presbyterian, pays oar beautiful and
thriving town ajust compliment. There
is not a more desirable place of residence
in Georgia-—we might say in the South
—than Athens. We have been told by
persons who have visited Italy that even
that far-famed climate does not surpass
ours; we also possess social, religious,
and educational advantages equal to any.
The writer, however, is mistaken as to
the origin of the name given to the
•• west end.” It took its name from the
venerable father of Gov. Cohn, who, at
one time, owned most of that portion
of the town now denominated Cobbham
Athens, Ga, April 25,1853.
Messrs. Editors—If you have never
visited this city, I hope you may find
your duty to cio so, in the coming an
tumn, at the session of the Synod of
Georgia. It has several points of in
terest to be noted.
It is remarkable for its outline as
city. i It extends over many acres, dot!
cd witKjelegant and costly mansions,
embosomed tn nativo ’'forests and rich
foliage. Cobbham, especially, demands
admiration. This portion of this little
city takes its name from the .residences
of Governor Howell Cobb, and a broth
er of his, eminent as a lawyer. This
latter gentleman is son-in-law of Judge
Lumpkin, whose residence is more like
tho palace of a “ duke” than the judge
of a republican State.
So extended is this city of four thou
sand ^inhabitants, that it wearies one tr
walk over it, Thero stands an old
weatherbeaten, dilapidated, ancient
church edifice, many years since reare
for tho Presbyterian church and con
gregation. After a rule through “ the
'vest end” of this aristocratic city, when
you come upon this dingy, unpointed,
unseemly wooden church, you can hard
ly believe that the splendid mansions

Arrival of tbe Daniel. Webster.
GREAT LOSS OF LIFE.
Nkw Orleans May 9.
The steamship Daniel Webster has ar
rived at this port from Nicbaragua.—.
She brings California dates-to the 16th
of April.' The news is of very little im
portance, with the exception of tho loss
of tho Vanderbilt steamship S.S. Lewis,
which ran ashore on her passage from
San Juan. Her passengers, four hun
dred in number, all got safely ashore,
saving all their baggage; but the steam
er and everv thing elso will bo a total
loss—estimated at $200,000; on which
it is thought there is no insurance.
Tho boiler of the steamer Jenny Lind
had exploded near San Francisco; by
which fifty or sixty persons were terri
bly scalded, and over twenty killed, in
cluding seven children and one whole
family.
