Prom tho Knickerbocker.
Ladies* Stockings,
i.
A clothes line in yonder garden
Goes wandering among the trees,
And on it two very long stockings
Are kicking the evening breeze;
And a lot of fanev dry goods,
Whoso nature 1 cannot define,
Are wildly and merrily flopping
About that same old line.
II. .
And a very sly young lady
At tho parlor window sews;
And I rather conclude if you tried it,
You’d find she’d fit into them hose;
She's only a half length picture,
Foreshortened below the breast.
But the dry goods which dance on the tight
r °pe,
Out yonder, just make up the rest.
III.
So dreamlike, she seems so gentle.
You’d think her too good for earth ;
And I feci that a holier spirit
Is banishing vulgar nurtli
To its worldly home—by Jingo .
What a flourish that muslin throws,
And how uncommonly taper
Those stockings go off at the toes.
IV.
O yes! like the sky when it’s bluest!
Or hair like the night without star!
O muslin and hose ! I can’t help it!
Ye still draw my thoughts over “thar!”
The lady alone is substantial,
The clothes but a fancy ideal,
Yet somehow or other—confound it—
I’ve mixed up the sham and the real.
V.
O Love! you’re the same old experience
With the poet, the muff, or the brick ;
Yon go up with a rush like a rocket.
But come down at last like, a stick.
And let love-thoughts he lofty or lowly,
Platonic or flash, 1 opine
That they all, like new dry goods and stoek-
ings,
Belong to the very same line!
L’Envoy.
Be sure that no belter a garden
Was ever yet waiting in hate
And Meister Karl thinks that a ballad
Looks well when it ends with a close!

not Weather— Beware of Excesses.
The delay of the hot weather renders
caution nil the more necessary now that
it has come. Statistic s show that tlte
largest number of deaths from imprudence
happen when a cold spell is suddenly
snccccded by one of intense heat; anil
the reason is that people, feeling no
cltange actually, thoughtlessly risk
their health to get cool. A laborer over
heated, rushes to a hydrant, drinks cold
water to excess, and perishes in a few
hours. Another person seeks relief in
juleps, coblers, and other mis-called
“cooling drinks,” and the result is in
creased excitement of the brain, instead
of diminished actions there, often follow-
by fresh fruit, and either eats too much
or eats that which is not ripe, and lie too
pays for indiscretion with his life. A
fourth, fifth and sixth violate the law of
health in some other way, and arc pros
trated by illness, if not swept into the
grave. And so it goes, to the end of the
chanter.
The virtue of temperance, at this pe
riod of the season, cannoted be inculcated
too strongly. We do not mean temperance
in the use of distilled or malt liquors on
ly, but temperance in all things, but es
pecially eating drinking and work. A
eurfeit, when the thermometer is at nine
ty, is almost certain death. Even a
slight over-loading of the stomach, or
the indulgence in some indigestible arti
cle of food, often lead to violent cramps,
if not to cholera in its worst form. But
to cat too little, or to eschew either meats
or fruits altogether, as.some theorists do,
is an error only less dangerous. The
safest way is to continue the usual diet,
whatever that has been, taking care,
however, to indulge moderately, that is
with temperance. So also with drink
ing. If it is madness to imbibe spirituous
liquors in tho hope of being cooled; it is
folly to injure tbe digestive organs by
excessive indulgence in soda-water, or
ice-cream. K attire invariably suffers
when attempt? are made suddenly to
cool a person who is heated. Modera
tion in all things is indispensable. To
jump into a river, to quaff copiously of
ico water, or to bring anything else that
is cold in contact with the body, when
the latter is heated, is trilling with health
and life.
Excess in work is n fertile sonrcc of
illness, and sometimes of death, in sultry
weather. No man can perform as much
labor on a hot day, or under a vertical
snmmer sun, as he can in winter, or un
der cover. It is not only day laborers
who are in jeopardy. An unusual draft
upon the nervous power, part of which
should have gone to assist the digestion ;
and the consequence is, that when he
comes home, fatigued and hungry, to
eat a herty meal, lie is struck down by
billions cholic, dysentary or cholera
To throw off tliq garments,.when heated,
and sit in a current of air, is a common
error; and the seeds of many a consump
tion have been planted, in this way. in
healthy men. Be temperato in your la
bors and in walking, if you would escape
the diseases incident to hot weather
and which are so often fatal.—P/tila.

Profit of Underdrai.ying.—Mi
William Chamberlain, of Lower Red
Hook, (N. Y.) drained twenty-five acres
of land, at an expense of $60 per acre,
and the first three crops paid the whole
expense, including cost of cultivation.—
He may then hereafter look for a profit
of $20 per acre on each crop. Last
season part of this ground yielded 75
hnshels of corn and a part 300 bushels
of potatoes, whilo on adjacent undrained
fields the crops were nearly ruined by
the drought.
Not Recognised as Christians.—-
An Ohio paper says at the administra
tion of the Lord’s supper by the Rev.
Mr. Wishart, at his church in New Ath
ens, Harrison county, Ohio, a few Sab
baths since, he debated all know-noth
ings from participating in tlte ceremony.
He took tho.position that a person could
hot be a Christian and an honest man,
and at the none time a know-nothing.
