Timely Warning to the South.
In attempting, and successfully at
tempting. to identify know-nothingism
with abolitionism, a cotemporary point
edly observes, “The true position of tlio
northern know-nothing organization can
he fixed beyond a doubt by taking the
character of the men they have elected
to office. The same paper continues :
“From the first know-nothing triumph
to the last in the free States has been
one continual triumph over the sound
nationnl democrats, and the promotion
of the most rabid frce-soilcrs and aboli
tionist. Fanaticism rules 'he day at the
North, ami whenever this class gains the
ascendency tlicro is no surety that the
South will have her rights, and the pro-
petuitv of the Union is in jeopardy. In
fact, tlio know-nothing organization is
but another name for abolitionism.
“Let us turn back a few pages in the
history’ of know-notliingism, and read
what is there written, and mark the con
trast between tliis new order and that of
the democratic party. Seven ot the fol
lowing nine States bad democratic gov
ernors last year who were in favor of the
constitutional rights of the South. Now
look at them, you men re' the .South,
who have advocated the principles of rise
democratic party, and see how the Na
tional men have fallen, and know-noth
ing-abolition fanatics have risen tij
ready to violate the constitution and
trample your rights in the dust.
“New York.—Al. II. Clark, abolition
whig.
“Pennsylvania.—James D. Pollock,
abolition whig and know-nothin
“Massachusetts.—If. J. Gardner, ab
olition whig and know-nothin*.
“Mai lie.—A. P. Monil’,.abolition and
anti-Nebraska democrat worse than
whig.
“Connecticut.—Henry Dutton, an ab
olition whig.
“Iowa.—J. W. Grimes, abolition
whig and know-nothing.
“Michigan.—lv. S. Iknp eni, aboli
tion whig and know-nothing.
“Vermont.—Stephen Payee, abolition
whig and know-nothing.
“Rhode Island.—IV. \Y. Ifoppin, ab
olition whig and know-nothing.
“Now, let us turn to the page of 18-V>,
and read who the know nothings have
put into the United St-i^es Senate. In
Maine they’ have elected Fessenden,
rank abolitionist, as the successor to
James W. Pradhtirry, national demo
crat. In Massachusetts, Henry Wilson,
rank demagogue abolitionist, succeeds
Edward Everett, conservative Webster
whig. In New Hampshire they elect
Bell and Hale, abolitionists, as successors
to Atherton and Norris, national demo
crats. In Connecticut, they elect Fos
ter, bitter abolitionist,' as successor to
Truman Smith, whig. In Illinois, they
send Lyman Trumbull, bitter abolition
ist, to succeed Shields, sound national
democrat. In Iowa, they elect Harlan,
abolitionist, over A. 0. Dodge, sound
constitutional democrat. In Wisconsin,
they’ elect Durkec, abolitionist, over
Isaac P. Walker, conservatsvc demo
crat.
Let the people, we say look at such
facts as those, and determine for them
selves whether or not the northern know-
nothings arc sound on the slavery ques
tion. Even the know-nothings here will
not say their northern bret>
free-soilers and abolitionists.”
