DREAMING.
B V A. H. 8.
JjP't nipriitl had a sweet wild dream,
Whose influence vs o’r me stil,
Of beauty in its utmost grace—
A perfect form, a perfect face,
A soul as pure as a mountain rill.
Golden fragments of my dream—
Flittering moods of strange emotion—
Rise, ere 1 strive to recollect, ’
Like fragments of a vessel wreck’d
Rising from the depths of ocean.
' '-My dream was all of earliest love,
’ Of a radiant lovely face;
A temper and a soul so true,
It gave to all its own rich hue,
A palare made of every place.
My dream was all of earliest love,
Of love that was returned to me;
\V e were alike, in sun and shade,
And loved so well that thus we made
Unto ourselves sweet flattery.
1 know "tis all a momnents dream
That passed away ; but still 1 seem
To fill the gaze of soul-lit eyes—
How deep and tender!—and I hear
An eelio of a well-known voice
r Ringing in my tranced ear;
And my inmost soul acknowledges
A sweet and holy presence near.

A I.oticr from Gov. Troup.
Tlic Albany Patriot of Thursday last
contains two letters, written l>y the vete
ran statesman and patriot, Geo. M.
Troup, to John G. Hlappey, Esq. As
one of these letters gives the opinions
and views of the. venerable and distin
guished author in relation to the issues
now before the country, and as we feel
assured that our citizens, of all parties,
will desire to know the sentiments of one
whose tried patriotism and devotion to
their rights, in times past, has ranked him
among the wisest and purest men of the
age, and given to his name and historical
fame of which every true Georgian will
ever he proud, wc have transferred it to
our columns.
Mr. Slappcv, in introducing the let
ters to the readers of Patriot, re
marks :—
“ Gov. Troup now nearly eighty years
of age, ought to he becoming superann-
ated; not so, however—his letter shows
that his mind is as firm as adamant. He
is decidedly the most intellectual states
man’and purest politician of the age.—
Georgia’s mast gifted citizen, an original,
free, hold, independent thinker—nnfaul-
tering and vigorous! lie is ready for
any emergency, and every crisis; he
stood by Georgia exactly thirty years
ago (in 1S25,) he will stand by her in
lSdo.
Letter from Gov, Troup.
Valdosta, July 4, lS-'.j.
Dear Sir :—You are quite welcome
to do as you please with anything of
mine you may have in possession, pro
vided von think good may come of it.
I have neither taste, inclination or
spirits for controvcrsal politics, but am
notwithstanding, far from being indiffer
ent to the welfare of our country. If a
word from me could subserve its interest
in anv sensei it»wnuld not he wanting.
We see *>it)4tiU§< •rent eyes, or 1 would
he amazed at flit) disposition to the pres-
Southern country.* The present is in
truth the least exceptionable of all the
administrations we have ever bad, Gen.
"Washington’s Mr. Jefferson’s and Mr.!
Polk’s not excepted. People seem to lie!
opposed to it because there is really
nothing to find fault wi:!i. The Sotit].-
ern people are hound by honor, grati
tilde and patriotism to sustain it with all
tlicir might, tCat.'io' : r Church and For
eign emigration are mere pretences—the
administration has nothing to do with
cither.- The first has existed at all times
without complaint; the second has not
only existed, but lias been almost uni
formly.encouraged by people and gov
ernment, and now a party is formed to
destroy the administration because it
will not destroy the Roman Catholics
and put down the foreigners. This is
not to be believed. The true grounds
of opposition are—1st. The very small
number of offices at the disposal of the
President, when compared with the ve
ry great number of those who seek them ;
2d. The faithful and unfaltering integri
ty with which the public treasure is
guarded against the thieves who prowl
by night and by day to break in and
steal; and 3d. The inflexible, courage
wifcli which the President, in defending
the Constitution, defends the dearest
rights and mast sacred interests of the
South. The most formidable power
against the administration, is the party
occupying the latter ground and what a
spectacle, is here presented for the South
ern country ! Mr. Pierce and Mr. Halo
both from New Hampshire—the one an
honest man; the other a bigot, fanatic
and abolitionist! What a contrast!—
What effulgence I What blackness.—
And yet there are Southern men acting
with the latter to huinhlc and prostrate,
the former, and with scarcely any bet
ter pretext than that the former had ap
pointed to two conspicious offices two
prominent men, one failing in his duty,
and the other doing his with honor and
advantage to the country. Mistaken
and deluded men! Our very safety de
pending on union among ourselves, they
would sow discord and division. Our
highest interests depending on the veto,
they would take, the veto from Mr.

louoga, Lumpkin Comity, on the first Tuesday in
