cast their votes for BUCHANAN
and BRECKINRIDGE, with
the probable majorities :
Kxsas*.—Dates have been received from
Kansas to the 29th. Gov. Geary had arrest-
id several marauding parties. The G -and
Jury had found bills against ninety persons
on the charge of murder of the first degree.
The Legislature meet at Lecompton in Jan

Bridal Presents.—A new thing under
the sun is reported by a Baltimore paper,
which states that the bridal gifts displayed
on the table at weddings, are often hired
from jewellers expressly for the purpose. It
is stated that there is one silver coffee pot in
that city, that has figured at three dozen
weddings as “the gift of my uncle.” This
is a tittle too much to believe. The world is
given to humbug, but the idea of hiredailver-
ware to allow as gifts, is too ridiculous to be
credited. But the fools are not all gone yet.
Tall Picking.—The negroes on the cot-
ton plantation of Col. Davit, near Memphis.
Tennessee, did ■ great day’s work on the
8lh nit. The five highest picked 640, 610,
584, 556 and 544 pounds, or an average of
586 pounds. The average of all the hands
engaged was 365 pounds. The cotton was
picked within daylight, and was good mer
chantable cotton.
A Gentle Lamb.—A Rev. John Lamb, of
Mount Vernon, Ohio, recent’y preached
sermon in which he said, “any man who
will stand upon the Cincinnati platform, his
face and heart are as black as hell and dam
nation.”
