JAS. II.' LYLE,
Have von cVcr hnd the tonthacho ?
If not, then blessed is your ignorance,
for it is indeed bliss to know nothing
,about the toothache, as von know noth

tlio roots or fangs of a treacherous tooth.
But ask a sufferer how it feels, what it
is like, how it operates, and you may
lentil something theoretically which yon
may pray heaven that you may not know
prncticaiiy.
But there’s poor NViHiath, Whiffletrec

lishment, which is for the construction
of locomotives. The largo engine of
the works was in opcratDu, and - the
machine tor producing intense cold was
placed in the harness and commenced
operations. In less than au hour, the.
mercury in the thermometer within tho
machine wasweduced from 53 degrees

P : cccs, and p aced it outside the pipes,
and in a few minutes it was frozen
hard. A copper vessel was placed
along-sideof it on the sarao pipe, and
filled with water, which was in a short
time converted to solid ice. .Water
dropped on tho pipes was instantly con
gealed.. White frost formed rapidly on
the bra?s pipes aud tubes connected
with the machine. '
The machine in its present state is
arranged for making a ton of icc at an
operation. A square cistern with a
double well, hasdhc space between the.
two walls, say about one foot, tilled with
pulverized charcoal; inside of the inner
wall, £.e ax rows, each row . containing
twelve cast iron freezers, each capable
of holding as much water os will make

The Nautilus.
This is the name of a newly invented
diving apparatus which was exhibited
yesterday at Glen Cove. A number of
gentleman went by the steamboat Chain-
pimi from this city to Glen Co^, where
the experiment’s were made. Tho
Nautilus consists of a spherical shell of
builcr iron, which is niRde double, and
tlio space between tlio two sheets of met
al can be filled with water or nir. At
the top is a man-hole through which the
workmen pass. This is screwed dpwn
water-tight, and the water being admit
ted between the outer and inner surface,
the vessel rapidly sinks to the bottom
Light is admitted by means of a circle
of thick glass plates ou the upper part
of the Nautilus, and at the depth oftwen-
ty-tivo feet it was so light iuside, that
tlio finest type of the Daily News was
distinctly legible. On first descending,
considerable pain was felt in the cars by
most of those who were in the bell—
this soon passed off. A hole was open
ed in the bottom, and shells and star
fish were taken off the surface of the
mud. The lifting power of the apparat
us is very great, and stones of consider
able size were removed by its agency;.
Fresh air is pumped down from a boat
which accompan es the Nautilus; and no
difiiculty was experienced in respiration.
The vitiiite' 1 air is .discharged by several
apertures, and when let off into the wa-
ter, the sream of nir conld be traced up
ward to the surface. Tim ascent is
fnade by admitting air into the space
between the outer aiul inner shells.—
There arc guages which show the.depth
to which the nparntiis descends, and
there are several other .contrivances to
secure the efficiency and safety of tho
aparatus.A."-;,- .... •
it is inteajqd to apply the Nautilus
to the construction of piers and mason
work under water, to the raising of ves
sels, diving. Sec. The exhibition was
perfectly successful, and • a hrrg$ num
ber of scientific gcntlemen-andTreporters ,unc -
united in opinion, that the Nautilus was
the most complete diving machinery
they hnd ever witnessed.
