The Euglish Language-
The time seems fast approaching when
tho English language will exorcise over
the other languages of the world a pre
dominance which our forefathers little
dreamt of. When Lord liacon aimed at
futurity in his writings, he set himself
to write in Latin : ‘1 do conceive,’ he
says, ‘that the Latin volumes being the

selves, wo cannot cheat nature. A cer
tain amount of food is necessary to a
healthful, body, and if less than that
amount he furnished, decay commences
the very hour. ]t is the same with
sleep,, and, any one who persist in allow
ing himself less than nature requires,
will only hasten his arrival at tho mad
house or the grave.

Overwork.—Unwise above many is
the man who considers every liour lost
, or in study ;
he who thinks
every moment of. her tin)c lost which
does not find her sewing. We once
heard a great man advise that a biok of
some kind he carried in tlie pocket to
be used in case of any unoccupied mo
ment—such was his practice, lln died
early and fatuitous! There are wo
men who, after a hard day’s work, will
sit and sew by candle or gaslight until
tlicir eyes are almost blinded, or until
certain pains about tho shoulders come
on which-arc almost insupportable, and
are only diivento bed by a physical in
capacity to,- work any longer. The
sleep of the overworked, like that oi
those who do not work at all, is unsat-
I '-“dying and unrefreshing, and both alike
wake up in weariness, sadness, and
languor, with an inevitable result, both
dying prematurely. Let no one work
i" pain or weariness. When a mail is
tired ho ought to lio down until he is
most fully rested, When, with renovated
strength, the work will be better done,
done the sooner, done with a self-sus
taining alacrity. The time taken from
seven or eight honrs sleep out of each
twenty-four is time not gained, hut
time more than lost; we can cheat our-
soit to every means to brin
desiied.iesult.

his object.

equally well for the cover. It has some
time occurred to me that there arc those

The New England Farmer, speakiug
on the subject, says :
Any poison whose attention has been
called to the subject, and who still per
sists in the use of a light check roiu,
ought to have his own head placed in a
similar position to that to which he has
crucly subjected t he horse. If I were
the Grand Sultan, every man who tor
ments his horse with a check Tcin,
should hold his arms at right angles
with his-body, for an honr at a time
once in twenty-four hours, as long as
lie continued the check rein. Tho
practice of drawing in the heads of team
iiors’s, by means of this pernicious
strap, is .especially cruel. Tito horse,
in endeavoring to expend his strength,
needs the free, natural use of Ins head
and neck. The cramping position uow
enforced is alike severe and injurious to
horses, and should be eased off till na
ture is at free play
