Yicu th* Atlanta American 18th instant.
Air-Line Rail-Road Meeting.
A few of our citizens met at the City-
Hall yesterday morning for the purpose
receiving from the President and Di
rectors an account of the prospects of
the Iload, the fueling of the people
along tho lino of it, and for considering
the host mode of operations lor the fu
ture.
On motion lion. "Wm. 'Ezzard wns
called upon to act as Chairman, and S.
B. lloyt as-Secretary. _ .
The Chairman then stnted briefly the.
object of tho meeting ami pronounced
tlieTnecting organized and ready tor
Lusincss.
A motion was then made that the
'counties interested should be called, nod
that theddogaies, if any present, should
respond. 'In accordance with this,
Gwinnett was called, when Thomas TI.;
Jones, Esq., Director, arose itr.il said'
that Gwinnett county was alive to the
importance of tins work, was willing
and anzions, but was waiting tho issue
of difficulties interposed by tiro City
‘Council «*f Atlanta. The amount of
stock subscribed is about forty thous
and dollars, which he considered gener-.
ally good. i
Air. Brown Esq., answered for Hall
county. The people of llall, he said,
'were a Railroad ■people,.exlnbiting great
'arixiety ’for this -Road. They had com
menced work, but rmrovs of difficulties
>v in refcfF^be to instalments duo by the-
City Council of Atlanta hud readied
them, and thoy had quit work, lie
said iliey did not make much—not so
much as they could; the quantity was
• less than they were able to produce,
'but production was curtailed for want of
facilities to get to niaikot. AY hat they
made was heavy—diiiicult and costly to
wagon, and of less money value than
some productions, but still affording
..good freight The amount subscribed
in l llall was one hundred and -sixty
thousand dollars, of which one hundred
and probably one hundred and fifty
thousand was good and reliable.
E. M. J«1 nison Esq., of JIall, ban but
little to add tc. what Mr. Brown had
■said. The people had a great desire to
'be sit work on the Road—had com
mcnccd at the Savannah River, and
intermediately between there ami
Gainesville—and from Gaiuesville to
wards Atlanta. Had cleared off five
•miles of the track, and quit on account
of the difficulty here, in Atlanta. The
people were in favor of the Road, and
felt it to be one of their necessities. Divi
dends were not so much thought of as the
great and general benefit it would be to
them as means of getting tin ir surplus
products to market. Liberally as Hall
county had subscribed, fifty thousand
dollars more could be obtained if the
work was begun in earnest, with the
certainty of .progressing to completion
Ho affirmed that there was enough pres
ent means to grr.de the Road from
•Gainesville to Atlanta, without the city
subscription. But tho news had gone
out that Atlanta wisbod to repudiate,
and build a Road wcstwardly to Jack
sonville. . It so, Atlanta-courlddoso.and
they would cotne to the great bond
‘ near Stone Mountain. But if Atfuuta
desired them to come to tlic city, as
Hall county prefers to do she must back
up the enterprise. There was no ob
stacle if she would do so, and work har
moniously with the country. Contracts
could be made, to bo paid one-halt in
stock, to grade to the Gwinnett line,
and even half through Gwinnett, i/e
remarked that if on a full and fair in
vestigation, a deficiency should appear,
lie would be one of oue hundred to put
a hand on the Hue and work twelve
mouths, between Atlanta 'and Gaines
ville, and receive stock in pay. The
people ot Hall wore determined to have
a Road.
The call on Franklin was responded
to by Col. Thos. Morris. He cotjld on
3y speak for Franklin county. The
people oi Franklin had been enthusi
astic, but bad cooled down. They
needed and were anxious for the Road
«tnd were willing to do their part. They
bad waited until tlicir confidence had
been impaired. The news reached his
county that the City Council of Atlan
ta was interposing difficulties, and Lad
manifested no little distrust of tho coun
try stockholders. He could only speak
for Franklin, and he would say that a
more reliable and responsible list oL
subscribers had never subscribed for f
any Road, and that they were the
equals of any other any where on the
line. If the City Council of Atlanta
could not take bis word lor it, lie did
not know bow they could arrive at it
unless assessors were appointed and
sent up to examine into and assess the
value of the property of Slockliold rs !
The chief difficulty was here. The
people had paid their money, and it
had been paid out without any work
being done, or tho prospect of any, and
they were unwilling to pay more unless
they were assured of beneficial results.
Action was needed to restore confidence,
that action must be prompt and begiu
with Atlanta. He reported niuoty-
eeven thousand dollais bona fide sub
scribed, after lopping off bad and doubt
ful, and fifty thousand conditionally.—
Let the work be but commenced and
much more can be got, especially in
contracts, two thirds to bo paid iu Cash
and the other third in Stock.
Mr. J. McCurry of llait said the
people in his county wcie exceedingly
anxious to have tho woik go forward.
They were willing to do their full share,
and felt cobfidcnt they would respond
cheerfully and promptly when difficul-
tics should be adjusted, and it should
be determined to press forward. Hu
reported sixty-two thousand dollars sub
scribed bona fide.
Mr. Goorge Kellogg said that what
had been subscribed in Forsyth was
good. 'That the people of that county
- lclt a deep interest in the work, and
were desirous of its success. That as
this certainty became manifest For
syth would do considerably more tliau
she bad done to the present time.
Mr. J. Samford of Dawson county
Was able to report but fifteen hundred
dollars for Dawson county, which was
all good.
Dr. George D. Phillips responded for
Habersham eounty. The Southern
partion wns highly in favor of the Road,
and would give it liberal support and
material aid. The amount subscribed
—fifty thousand dollars—ho considered
was subscribed by persons competent to
pay. Ib his opinion* the amouut would
buuicreased to $60, or $70,000 as soon as
it was certain tho Road would be built
He knew an opinion wns prevalent that
North-Fastem Georgia was a bleak and
sterile resrion. not capable ot producing
much. But it was a mistake. « was
well watered, heavily timbered and the
soil fertile. In hrs judgment It wa*
fully equal in every respect, superior
to North Western ‘Georgia. What is
needed to demonstrate this were facili
ties for transportation—such facilities
wore nBeded’to develop the resources,
in that-section. .
Mr. Nor cross, the President, then
made a statement for Fulton County
and of the aggregate, by which it was
made clear I hat nil the requirements were
met—that five hundred and fifty thou
sand dollars had been subscribed inde
pendent of tlie city subscription—and
that the bona-fide and reliable aggre
gate exceeded seven hundred and fifty
thousand dollars. lie also read from
document published iu 1S36, and
signed by Win. Denting, President,
and James Camak, Cashior, showing:
that at date, the Georgia Railroad had-
only six’llundred and fiffy nine thousand:
dollars subscribed. Tins is stated at
thc rime d!‘ealiiug for the fifth instak
merit, which they propose to receive in
notes payable in sixty days ! And yet,
the construction of the was commenced,
and from so small a beginning lias the
present Rond, two hundred and four
teen miles long, been built, and the
capital stock grown to become over four
millions of dollars'!!
At the conclusion ef tho President’s
remarks, a resolution was adopted re
questing (he Mayor and Council to ap
point a committee of two to confer with
the President and Board of Directors
to revise and adjust the list, and see if-j
present disagreements could not he re j
concih-d. The meeting then adjourned
until 8 o’clock this morning.
On the whole, the feeling exhibited
by the country Directors is cheering in
tho highest degree, and their spirit of
determination worthy of emulation —
And they affirm that all -the people
•along the line are as enthusiastic as
themselves. If Atlanta only manifests
the same liberality of subscription and
action, and resoluteness of purpose, we
sec no reason why operations should
not speedily commenced, and the Road
completed :rt an early day.

At tho hour appointed on yesterday,

Mr. Brown, of Hall then arose and
stated that ns the City Council refused
to recognize the last one hundred thou

fifty thousand, the list fell short same
eighty-three thousand -dollars of having
lie necessary amount, and hence, as
nothing could bo accomplished,he moved
an adjournment.
Before this motion was seconded or

Dr B M Smith, member of Council
next spoke in defence oi Council, and
endeavored to maintain that by rccog
n’tzing tho last subscription as part of
the sum mentioned, the first subscription
was null, faith broken between tlie in
dividual stockholders, and, hence, was
not binding, and, in liis judgment, could
bo successfully resisted.
Mr. Brown, of Hall, then addressed
tho meeting again, saying that lie could
see no good to result from the discussion.
They had conio here to try to come to
an understanding. <_)u conferring with
the City •C’oun-cH it was ascertained that
that body rejected the contract stock
and refused to recognize the last sub
scription, as the Directors had been led
to regard it. Such being the Case the
conference had resulted in ire good, and
the farther discussion of it could accom
plish nothing.
lie was followed by Hon J I Whita
ker, who made a few plain, practical re
marks, expressing his unalterable and
ardent friendship for the road, and his'
earnest dcsiie that it should be prcnseil
forward to a successful completion. He
thought that, if the I’rcsidcitt and Board
of Directors had complied with the
Charter and the conditions, obligations
and pre requisites, they qould collect at
law.
Mr. Johnson of Hall then inquired
whether the stuns subscribed to be paid
in work, would be regartled ns equiva
lent to a cash subscription. Members
of Council present answered in the neg
ative. Mr. Johnson then complained
that the Board and Stockholders had
been treated unfairly. That while they
were proceeding under one conviction,
the City had neglected to he represent
ed at the stockholder’s Convention and,
had not warned them of this difficulty!
After a few explanatory remarks from
Mr. allacc, Dr. Smith and others, the
meeting adjourned.
It is but justice to say thnt Council-
men not ouly expressed their individual
friendship for the enterprise, but affirm
ed that Ihe Council iu a body were friend
