To those who nnd the signs of <he
times aright, there is a significant les
son to be learned from the present at
titude of the North. All idea of con-
cilintiun, all the old professions cf fra
ternal attachment all the glosses and
subterfuges to which men have resorted
to cheat themselves into the belief that
they entertained no other sentiments
than those of the warmest regard for
the South; sweet chanty, social friend-
ships, generous instincts—all these
have been ruthlessly swept away, and
but one idea r.ow animates all classes
of Northern people—that idea is, sec
tional and commercial domination.—
Henrefi rth there is to be but one pow
er recognised—the power of the North.
To maintain it, to enforce it, the South
is to be subjugated, decimated, devas
tated—annihilated, if it needs must be
so. It is no longer a quarrel over the
status of the black man, tbe right of
property it. slaves, or the equal rights
of the .Sooth in tbe Territories. These
issues have dwindled into nothingness
in the presence of the grander and
more vital object of tbe contest which

CHOICE COIXTRY FL01R,
of the Young Men s Christian Asso- j et | bv fortifications. It is well known
ciations ot Baltimore, cot sisttug of six 1 lb at Marsh 1 Saxe, a high authority in
members of each, yesterday proceeded | suc |, things, was in the habit of saying
to Washington for an interview with
the President, the purpose being to in-
teicede with him iu behalf of a peace
ful policy, anti to entreat him not to
pass troops through Baltimote or Ma
ryland. Rer. Dr. Fuller, of the Bap
tist Church, accompanied the party, by
invivation, as chairman, and the con
versation was conducted mainly be
tween him and Mr. Lincoln, and was
not heard entire by all '.be members ol
tbe delegation.
Our informant, however, vouches
for what we now write. He states
that upon the introduction they were
received very cordially by Mr. Lin
coln—a sort of rude familiarity of man
ner—and tbe conversation opened by
Dr. Fuller seeking to impress upon
Mr. Lincoln the vast responsibility of
the position he occupied, and that up
on him depended the issaes of peace
or war—on t ne hand a terrible, fra
tricidal conflict, on the other, peace.
“But,” said Mr. Lincoln, “what am
I to do?”
that to kill a man in battle, the titan’s
weight in lead must be exploded.—
A French medical and surgical Ga
zette, published at Lyons, says this
fact was verified at Solferino, even
with the recent great improvement in
fne-artns. The Austrians fired 8,-1U0,-
000 rounds. The loss of the French
and Italians was 2,000 killed and 10,-
00 wounded. Each man hit cost
700 rounds, and every man killed cost
4,200 rounds. The nte*n weight of
tails is one ount e; thus, we find that
it required, 011 an average, 272 lbs. of
lead to kill a man. If any of our
iriends shoul: get into a military fight,
they should feel great comfort in the
fact that 700 shots may be fired at
them before they are hit, and 4,200
before they “shuffle off the mortal
coil.”—Louisville Journal.
