A Zouave's Account ortlie Bowie Knife
Fight.
Tbo following, from the Washington
correspondent of the Baltimore Sun, is
too good to bo lost:
Ono of the Mew York Fire Zonaves,
who was wounded at the battle of Ma
nassas on Sunday week, a stalwart,
Lardy fellow, of considerable intc’li
gence, passed through this city yester
day, en route homeward, remaining here
several hours waiting for the cars. lie
of course, lias the privilege, like ali
others, of telling his own tale, without
apprehending, for the present at least,
successful contradiction. From him 1
obtained a thrilling narrative of a ren
contre between his regiment and a reg-
iureut of Mississippians.
After the battle hai been raging for
some hours, according to the account of
this Zouavian hero, ho saw an immense
body of Mississippians , accompanied by
some (it is believed) LaUimorcans, rush
fuiiously over the Confederate ram
parts. They at once saw tbe cons) ic-
uous uniforms of tbe Zouaves, and made
at them. The Mississippians. after ap
proaching near enough, sent a terrible
volley from their rifles into the Zouave
rank*. This done, tlioy threw their
guns aside and charged onward until
each contending enemy met face to face
and hr.nd to hand, in tcrriblo combat.
The Mississippians, having discarded
their rifles alter the f.rst lire, fell hack
upon tiicir bowie-knives. These were
o!:' Luge dimensions, eighteen to twenty
inches long, heavy in proportion, and
sharp or two-edged at the point. At
tached to the handle was a lasso, some
e ght or ten feet in length, with ouo end
securely wound round tho wrist.
My itiformaut says when these ter
rific warrioia approached to withiu
reach of their lasso, not waiting to come
in bayonet range, they thiow forward
their bowie knives at the Zouaves after
the fashion of experienced harpooners
stiikingat a whale. Frequently they
plunged in, and penetrated through a
soldier's body, and were jeiked out,
ready to strike again, while the first
victim suuk into death. On several
occasions the terrible bowie knifo was
transfixed in a Zouave, and the Zou-
a.e’s bayonet in a Mississippiau, both
impaled and falling together. So skill
fully was this deadly instrument han
dled by tbe Mississippian that ho could
project it to the lasso length, kill his
v ctim, withdraw it again with a sud
den impulso, and catch the handle un
erringly.
If by any mischance tho bowie-knife
missed its aim, broke the cord fastening
it to the arm, or fell to tho earth, re
velvers were next resorted to and used
with similar dexterity. The hand-to-
hand closing io with both pistol and
bowie-knife, cutting, slashing, carving
and shooting almost in the same mo
ment, was awful beyond description.—
llleod gushed from hundreds of wounds
until, amid death, pitiful groans and
appalling sights, it staunched the very
earth. My Zouave champion says him-
si If and comrades did hard lighting,
6tood up manfully to tho murderous
conflict, but never before know w-liat
undaunted bravery and courage meant,
lie felt no further ambition to engage
in such rencontres. Having been shot j f .| lrk
through the wrist by a revolver, after j i-;ii, e rr,
escaping the fearful Mississippi weap | Oglethorpe,
oi.g, and disabled from further active | Greene,
participation in the struggle, lie wil j
lit gly retired to reap the glory won,! Butts,
convinced that to fight against Missis- Clavton,
sippinns, with bowie-knives and pistols, j^yetle,
af:cr receiving a volley of their sharp
cracking rifles, is no ordinary fun.
