The alien and seditious laws the eldr t

the Lincoln law in lorec in Maryland. Men
are not allowed to act or speak contrary to
the wishes ol his Lordship President Lin

what a freeman should not fear to speak open

best and most reliable men in Maryland.—

From the Memphis Avalanche, 38th ultl
We learn througli a gentleman just ar‘

received there last night, that (Jen. Price,
commanding the Missouri troops, had cap

completely routing the Federal t.oops, and
capturing a large number of the men, to
gether with 4,0(10 stand of arms.
Large Cl umbers of the Missourians from
j the Home Guards took the oath to s.,pp„„
| the (.onfedernln Government, and joined
I rice s lorces. Tlie officers captured were
held as prisoners of war, together with the
troops who decltnod taking the oath of al
legiance to the Confederate Government.
Col. Uilley Mulligan, the celebrated II-

Illinois volunteers is among the prisoners,
and wit' doubtless go into winter quarters
in New Orleans.
An important item in the spoils of victory
is the capture of $350,000 in specie, taken
troni the Banks and receipted lor by them

The news comes through the St. Louis

and 140 wounded, and the rebel loss
as supposed to be about 800 killed and

federal forces, and bail under hi* command
some five or six thousand men.
7'lie fighting continued three days, the
Hessians being strongly posted and well
fortified.
The statements of the loss on both sides
are somewhat conflicting, and entirely un
reliable.

captured, consisting of over twenty pieces.

The St. Louts News of the 20\li in
stant contains a partial report of the
fight at Lexington, which, so far as it |
goes, confirms the previous report I
which reached us recently bv telegraph.
Its report is up to 10 o’clock Wcdnes
day, night, the ISth instant.
1 he confederates under Gen. Price
numbering from 15,000 to 20,000,
opened fire on the Federal gatrison,
(here eariy cn Wednesday morning—
The garrison responded,*and the ean-
nonade was kept up tili 10 o’clock at
night, when the man who brought the
news, and »vas a resident of the oppo
site side of the river, left.
r I lie Confederates had seized three
steamboats, laden with ammunition
and stores for the federals, which had
been sent up from Jcfteison City.
The Federal’s g.trrison was on the
south side, at the outskirts of the city,
in their entrenchments around the Ma
sonic College. T 1> e Confederates
made their attack on that side, and had
also taken possession of the city, so
the fedoials were between two fires.
The federals were commanded by
Col. Mulligan, Chicago. News has
reached Padueha that lie had surien-
ent.'ered—his ammunition having given
out. This was published in a Lincoln
sheet, which the scoundrels, under
Grant have started there since they
took possession of the place.

The Bowling Green correspondent
of the Union and American writes that
the agents of Lincoln continue to make
arrests of prominent cetizens of Louis
ville. In addition to those heretofore
reported, it is said that 11. Atkinson,
A. O. Brannin, and Ex-Gov. Merri-
wether, have been arrested anti sent out
of the State.
Rousseau holds Muldrough’s Hill.
The'Federal forces in Louisville, and
along the line, are believed not to ex
ceed 4,500.
It is reported that in response to ap
peals for aid, Lincoln says the Union
men of Kentucky must fight their own
battles, as he has no troops to send
them.
Bowling Green is full of citizens of
Louisville, and Jelierson, and Hardin,
and other counties, fleeing (rom the
lawlessness of the Linculnites.
Passengers from Bowling Green, by
to day’s Lain, say the arrival at
Louisville of two Iowa regiments ts
reported—supposed to be pait of those
captured at Lexington, Mo., and re

THE BATTLE OF LEXINGTON, MO.
Naslivdie, Tenn., Sept. 29.—A dis
patch dated Quincy, 111., Sept. 23d,
savs that the siege of Gen. Mulligan,
at" Lexington, Mo., commenced on
Thursday, Sept. 12, and continued
from day to day until Friday last, at 5
o’clock P. AL, when the Union Hag was
hauled down—the Federalists having
fought fifty-nine hours without any wa
ter to drink. They had only three
barrels of vinegar to quench iheir thirst.
The supply of water was from the river,
and was cut off by the Confederates,
after a desperate light, on Wednesday.
St. Louis, Mo., Sept 23.—General
Pientiss’ dispatch announces ihe sur
render of Gen. Mulligan, #t Lexington,
exhibited since hostilities begun, so
have theit courage and spit it. But
among all the incidents related we
t.ave seen none to surpass this. The
correspondent says:
‘A few days after the fight at Sker
ry, near Charleston, Kanawha, two or
three Yankee officers visited the house
of a Mr. Fry, who had been driven
Irom his house by the enemy. A
daughter of Mr. Fry saw them ap
proaching through the gate, and con
fronted them in the poich with a de
mand to know their business. They
stated that they were looking for seces
sion fligs, and heard there were some j
there.’
The correspondent then gives her
reply, which is truly heroic, worthy the
best days of chivalry, arid deserves to
be handed down to future generations
in letters bright and enduring. Here
it is:
‘ Brave men,’ said she in scorn,
‘take flags on the field of battle—cow
ards only hunt them at the houses of
defenceless women. Mine is in the
hands of our brave volunteers; go and

Dearest Marcu«, thou h st left us,
We thy lii.-s most deeply feel,

He can all our sorrows heal.
Peaceful he thy silent slnmbers;
Peaceful in thy grave, so low;
