€eo. neatirfgaird and (lie Fair BaKf-
moreans—An Fpisode of Life at
ientrevillc.
r l'hc following interesting incident
is narrated in a Richmond letter to the
N. O. Crescent:
^ Some negroes, at work on the roads
and fortifications, took it into their
heads one night to serenade Gen.
Beuaregard. Pleased with their per
formance, he went to tlie window and
asked them to sing “My Maryland,”
ihe sweetest and most touching song
tlie war lias yet produced. They
were unable to sing it. The next day
Col. Jordan, Beauregard’s Adjutant,
who has a printing press in his de
partment, caused several copies of “My
Maryland” to be struck oil and sent
to the members of the First Maryland
Regiment, many of whom are vocalists
of the highest order. The hint w as
taken, and that night Gen. Beauregard
heard “My Maryland” sung with the
power and pathos which exiles alone
can give it. At its close he steppeil
forward, and, in his modest, gentle
way, said ; “Gentlemen, I thank you
. warmly for the very agreeable serenade
you have given me.” The Maryland
ers, knowing his qu et habits, and think
ing he had said all he intended to say,
responded with “three cheers for Beau
regard,” and were about to return to
their camp. AVhat was their surprise
when he called them to stay, and un
furling a flag, said : “Gentlemen, 1 pre
sent to you a Confederate battle flag,
made in Baltimore by the most beauti
ful woman in that city.”
Without waiting to hear more, an
enth .siastic young officer called for
“three cheers for Miss Hettie Cary,’’
the mixture and set to, but t iis time it
involved tlie opening of a scc ind bottle
of brandy, which proved to be rather
fiery after sipping three or loir glasses,
so we qualified the mixture with rum.
Now ruin per ar, is a very delectable
beverage, and when mixed with brandy
and converted into nog. it is tit for the
gods. So \vc devoted all out attention
to tiie nog. and managed to put about
a quart under our belt. 'V e then
smoked a cigar, and felling dry, im-

and took another drink. Somebody
set two glasses and two bcvls of nog

us—so wc waited for our ftiends to
come, tut as they didn’t w 3 drank to
their health out of both bow s and with
two tumblers. Made more nog, crack
ed an egg containing a ve ry juvenile
chicken ; popped him in and rather
reckon that chicken got tight at a very
early age. Drank more no *. Feeling
very dry, we concluded to go on! and
get a glass of nog, but on looking up (
we saw two doors, and as vn knew’ our |
room had but one wo thougi t wc would
wait till out friends with wl om wo were
drinking should return and show its the
way out. Tasted some mere nog, and
imagined that we had hoet converted
into a big egg, nml that our darling
Mary Ann was about to Ircak us in
two preparatory to converting us into
nog. Found tve had been snoozing,
and took more nog to keep us awake
