Removal of the Court House.
—Wc nrc gratified to learn that the re
moval of the Court House to Athens,
which has been urged by the Southern
Banner for some time, meets with signal
favor. Already n very large majority ol
the citizens of the county have signed
idle petition, and many of those who de
cline to sign the petition, frankly express
the conviction that it ought to he re
moved, but from deference to friends on
the other side of the river they do not
wish tt take any part in the agitation
of the subject. While we respect this
friendly regard for the interest of those
opposed to removal, the public interests
appear to us to outweigh all such con
siderations. The tax hooks of the county
show that eight tenths of the taxable
property of the county is given in and
paid by the citizens of Athens and the
adjoining districts whose citizens are al
most unanimously in favor of removal.
We are reliably informed that four fifths
of the voting population of the county
reside on the East or Athens side ot the
river, and it is a well-known fact that
more than eleven-twelfths of the trade of
the county is done in Athens.
Wc stntcd some weeks ngo, that the
Town llall could lie secured for a Court
House, and are pleased to learn that the
Town Council, at a late meeting, tender
ed it to the county for that purpose.
This spikes the only gun of the opponents
of removal—the argument that the coun
ty is too poor to build a court House.
With nn expense of $ 500 the Town Hall
can lie made far more commodious for
Court House purposes than the present
contracted structure.
There is no tenable argument that can
he offered against the removal. And it
is a significant fact, that though wc
tendered our columns t > those opposed
to the movement, no one has accepted
the offer.
On Their Dignity.—Sometime
ago a gentleman from the West side of
the river, rather triumphantly declared
to us that since the colored population
have been admitted to the ballot Athens
could not carry the removal of the
Court House. The idea was that the
Watkinsville party, as lie called it, had
got the "colored vote, and they would
not forget their friends. Finding that a
vast number of the colored people desire
the Court House removed, in order that
they may he accommodated with lodg
ing court week,(which is now imposible)
our Watkinsville friends have, wc learn,
started a petition on a white basis. They
cannot consent to go on a petition with
“ niggers.” Some of them were demni-
tion anxious to go on aticket with color
ed pcoplc^to get the county offices, and
it looks a little ungenerous to go back
on their friends in that way!

Seed Tnunis; or Bible view* of mind,
morale and religion. By Pharcellut
Church, J). I). New York: Shelton & Co.
Wc have received from the Publishers,
through T. A. Burke, a copy ot this in
teresting work. The object of the au
thor is to prepare the mind of the reader
for a more correct appreciation of, and a
deeper interest in, the truths of the Bible.
His plan is first, to sketch the Bible man
in his mental, moral, and religious char
acter ; and then to trace him out in the
states, transitions, and histories recorded
of him in scripture; and showing, at the
Mime time, their agreement with what
we are, wlmt our forefathers have been
and what our posterity is to be.
The author has drawn his materials,
not only from a careful reading of the
scriptures, hut from a careful analysis of
the germinal ideas conveyed in the origi
nal text. It is a thoughtful work, and is
worthy of thoughtful |>erusa!. It mfTy

of the largest publishing enterprises ever
conceived of is being carried on with the
greatest success by Messrs. E. C. Allen
& Co„ Augusta, Slaine. It is held by
them that they can conduct business
more economically at that place than
from a large city, and surely these words
arc proved by the subscription prices of
their publications, which are really thir
ty-three per cent, cheaper than those
charged by other publishers for similar
papers. Messrs. Allen & Co., have, Irom
the very start, showed the greatest ener
gy in starting and publishing their pa
pers. It is only two years since they
nunched forth their first publication,
Tlie People's Literary Companion, and
of the first number they printed three
hundred tliousand copies, tor gratuitous
circulation, and also spent nearly $100,-
000 in advertising it through newspapers.
The result was immediate ami grand,
subscriptions flowing in through the
agents, who were employed in all parts
of the country, liy the thousand, daily.
The people everywhere seemed to ap
preciate the real merits of the paper and
the low subscription price, and thousands
thinking they could not afford two liter
ary papers, discontinued those that they
were taking, and subscrilved for The
Campanian. For two years The People’s
Literary Companion was continued as a
monthly publication, and at one time at
tained the enormous circulation of eight
hundred and fifty thousand copies. It is
now published weekly, and is meeting
with greater success than ever. Though
its illustrations arc finer and more tasty
those of the three-dollurs weeklies, and
its reading matter of the greatest interest
in all its departments, the subscription
price is only two dollars per year. Messrs.
Allen & Co. have just started a paper
for young folks, called Our Young Folks’
Illustrated Pavkil It is published
semi-monthly—subscription price one
dollar per year. It is very handsomely
illustrated with appropriate engravings,
and cannot tail to interest and benefit all
the laiys and girls, and the old folks,
too, who have preserved young hearts in
their breasts.
Messrs. Allen & Co. have just moved
into their new publishing house, which
they have built during the past summer.
It is an elegant structure of brick, with
granite and freestone trimmings. All
the fittings inside nre superb. The first
story is used for storage room, and here
may he seen, at any time, tons upon tons
of paper, awaiting tor the printing presses.
The second story is the press room,
where, on an average, one hundred thou
sand papers per day are printed and
folded. The folding is done by machin
ery, each machine folding sixty papers
per minute. The third story is the mail
ing department, and included in the
furnishing of this room, are thirty tons of
type, which is required for printing the
names of suhscrilicrs on the papers.
The names of subscribers are printed on
the papers ut the rate of sixty per min
ute, by wonderful little machines. The
fourth nnd fifth stories are devoted to
the compositors’ department, and the
business and private olliees of the estab
lishment, which arc fitted up and furnish
ed with the greatest elegance. The sixth
story is devoted to an eltctrotyjw foundry,
and a department for folding pamphlets,
circulars, &c., &c. The entire building
is warmed by steam, and pure water runs
to every department and room. The
cost of the building exceeds one hundred
thousand dollars, and is a standing wit
ness to the energy of the enterprising
publishers. Wc congratulate Messrs.
Allen & Co. on their great success, and
ns long as their lilieral prices nre con
tinned, and their publications kept up
to their present standard of merit, may
their prosperity continue, nnd constant
ly increase.—Maine Parmer.

I wish it distinctly understood that when I recom

cold, while using mv Mtxllclnca, I do so for a special
reason. A man who has hut partially recovered
from the effects of a bad cold is far more liable to
a relapse than one who has been entirely cured;
and It Is precisely the same in regard to Consump
