INVITES ATTENTION TO IILS
FALL ST DDK
Lodge of Sokrow.—Mount Ver
non Lodge, No. 22. held a public *• Lodge
ol Sorrow” at Deupree’s Hallon Wednes
day night, Dec. 27th, commemorative ot
its deceased inemlters. The Hall was ap
propriately decorated, with an altar on
the East, and columns in different styles
of architecture on the South and West,
and other emblems of the Order in appro
priate places. In the centre was a cata
falque, decked with sable plumes and
draped in crape. Within its columns, on
an obelisk surmounted by a marble urn,
the names of the deceased brothers were
arranged in shields w’ith silvered borders.
Festoons of crape extended around the
Hal).
The exercises opened with a chunt
impressively sung by a quartette,
consisting of brothers A. K. Childs, W.
II. Jones, J. VV. Brown, and I. W. Hal-
lam—the latter performing an accompa
niment on the organ. The “Lodge of
Sorrow” was regularly opened by Wor
shipful Master Wm. King, assisted by
Wardens Dobbs and Chappel. After an
ode by the quartette as above, the Wor-
Selienck', Mandrake Pills. These Pill* clean the I i . ... , . .
stomach and bowels of &H the dead and morbid { 8 P' u ‘ -Master ciclitereu an appropriate
•lime that Is causing diseaso and decay in the whole
•yitf-in. They will clear out the liver of all diseased
bile that has accumulated there, and rouse It up to
a new and healthy action, by which natural and
boa’thy bile Is secreted.
The stomach, bowels, and liver are thus cleansed
by the u<?e of Schenck’s Mandrake Pills; but there . .
remains la the stomach an excess of acid, the j ( &t&!ulquc, stopplll;
organ is torpid and the appetite poor. In the bow
els the lactcals are weak, and requiring strength
and support. It Ls in a condition like this that
Sehenc.k’s Soawetd Tonic proves to be the most
valuable remedy ever discovered. It is alkaline,
and its use will neutralize all excess of add, mak
ing the stomach sweet and fresh; it will give per
manent tene to this Important organ, and create
a good, hearty appetite, and prepay the system
far the first process of a good digestion, and
nUlmately make good, healthy, living blood.
After this preparatew treatment, what remains
to cure mcFt eases of Consumption is the free
and persevering use of Schenek'a Pulmonic Byrupw
The Pulmonic Syrup nourishes the system, puri
fies the blood, and is readily absorbed into the
circulation, and thence distributed to the diseased
lungs. There It ripens all morbid matters, whether
io the form of abscesses or tubercles, and then
asshis Nature to expel nil the diseased matter, in
the form or I roe expectoration, when once it rinens.
It is then, by the great healing and purifying
nro|»ertics of Sciienck’s Pulmonic Syrup, that au
ulcers and cavities are healed np sound, and my
patient is cured.
The essential thing to be done in curing Con
sumption is to get up a good appetite and a good
THE CAUSE AND CURE OF CONSUltFITOZl
-The primerv cause of Consumption Is derange
ment of the digestive organs. This derangement
produces deflclent nutrition and assimilation. By
assimilation I mean that process by which the no- |
trlment of the food la converted Into blood, and {
thence Into the solids of the body. Persons with I
digestion thus Impaired, having the slightest prs- !
disposition to pulmonary disease, or If they take I
cold, will be very liable to have Consumption of |
Ihe Lungs In some of ILs forms; and I hold that It
will be impossible to cure any cose of Consumption
without first restoring a good digestion and healthy
assimilation. The very first thing to be done Is to
cleanse the stomach and bowels from all diseased
mucus and slime, which Is dogging these organs so
that they cannot perform their functions, and then
rouse up and restore the liver to a healthy action.
For this purpose the surest and best remedy Is
Mandrake Pills. These Pills dean the I
hwuau i Pubi^c Meeting.—We publish
(III111l « j a call forfa public meeting at the Town
J Hall tomorrow night, to nominate Town
: officers twhc clcctcU in January. It is
important if suck's meeting is heM, that
it be a lull and fair expression ot the
popular will. We therefore urge our
Town readers to attend the meeting.
If the meeting should net be large, we
suggest the propriety of calling meetings
in each Ward, at an early day next week
to nominate Wardens and to express their
choice for other Town officers.
We are actuated by no objection to the
present B< »d, and by no deair j to changa
it, but as a meeting is called, it is impor
tant that i^ be well attended, or that the
oruinations be referred to Ward meet
ings. It is important to avoid division, and
especially important to have a Board that
will co operate efficientlv in the railroad
enterprise just inaugurated, and who will
manage the finances wisely, as we believe
all concede the present Board has done.
There is pressing need of important
changes in the Town charter, but it is
not, perhaps our province to urge them
now. It must be apparent to all familiar
with our Town affairs, that it is impossi
ble to administer the affairs of the Town
satisfactorily without an increased reve
nue. Who is Intendaat, or who War
dens—however important—i* secondary
to the prime question of raising a reven
ue sufficient to maintain an efficicut Town
government, and carry forward improve
ments essential to the character aud pros
perity of the place.
A change in the mode of electing the
police, and an increased night police, arc
essential to good order—but how tar
these questions are to enter into the com
ing canvas, we know not. The selection
of Town officers without these needed re
forms we know to be a matter of little
concern to many of our best citizens.

Dr. Henderson, then read an impressive
lesson from the scriptures. The officers
of the Lodge then marched around the
at intervals to de-
positc flowers in commemoration of the
deceased. A funeral march oil the organ

testimonial.
An introductory address was delivered
by Past Master R. M. Smith, in which he
gave the names of all the members of the
Lodge who have died since its organiza
tion, and referred to the significance and
propriety of the present ceremonies - the
first held by this Lodge.
Past Master W. L. Mitchell then pro
nounced a eulogy on Gen. Howell Cobb—
presenting a brief sketch of his life, and
eminent characteristics as a statesman, a
citizen, and a mason.
Dr. II. II. Carlton spoke to the memory
of Wales Smith and W. U. Burroughs;
Capt. Howell Cobb to tlitj memory cf
Thomas Crawford and Charles S. Oliver;
Rev. Elisou D. Stone to Win Wood and
C. T. Aikman ; and Rev. J. D. Burkhead
to E. A. Reaves and John C. Turner. All
these addresses were marked by appropri
ate allusions to the leading characteris
tics of their subjects—a just appreciation
ot their virtues, and an affectionate recog
nition of the fraternal ties of which the
occasion was commemoraeive.
The “ Lodge of Sorrow” was closed
with an ode. and after a brief recess, the
following officers for the ensuing year
were installed:
J. II. Huggins, W. Mg Robert Cbnppel,
S. W.; S. H. Adams, J. Wg I.M. Kenney

meeting of the Board of Directors was
held on yesterday. The Chief Engi

material new points were made. The
Board decided upon the Jefferson route

of the Board we so much dissatisfied
with the result that they tendered their
resignations, which were not accepted.
Another meeting was called on Satur

Hou-erday Mischief. — The
night before Christmas was vocal with
a variety of unseemly noises and actions
which might well have frightened old
Santa Clans from his mission, and even
made old Nick himself blush for his pro
teges. There was not only a sound of
revelry,” but the night was fairly hideous
with the detonation of guns, pistols, and
fire-works, the rattle of rocks against pri
vate residences, the displacement and de
struction of gates and fences, the desecra
tion and defilement of premises of the
church and its ministers—unearthly yells,
and all sorts of satanic vandalism, which
would disgrace a wigwam of first class
swages. It was more 1 ke the imps of
pandemonium hailing the birth of a new
devii, tliau the rejoicing of a Christian
people in eommemoratijn of the advent
of a Redeemer.
If civilization is not a failure, and it is
proposed to maintain the forms of civi’-
ized life, measures ought to be taken to
detect and punish the authors of such
vandalism, and prevent its recurrence. If
we are bent on la-coming savages, we may
well nil tlith the mockery of law. nnd
abandon the pretences ol order and de
cency.
Guove Academy.—We desire to
call the attention of those citizens of
Athens who are interested in the ed

issue of our paper. Mr. Bernard has
had considerable experience, and no
small measure of success in his pro

Town Meeting.
A meeting of our citizens is hereby
called for Saturday, the 30th inst, at
7 o’clock, p. m., at the Town Hall, to
nominate an Intendant, members of
Council, Clerk of Council and Police
officers for the ensuing year.
1 [communicated.]
Town Election.
We notice in the Banner of the
22d insti, the re-nomination of the
present town officers for the year 1872.
We have no personal objection to any
one of them, and think that they have
discharged their duties to the satisfac
tion of the citizens. But we would re
spectfully suggest that this matter of
nomination, in conformity with a salu
tary custom, be left to the citizens gen
erally, aud that a meeting of our citi
zens be called at an early day for that
purpose, where we all can meet and
determine upou a proper ticket. Many
of us think that the services of a for
mer most efficient Intendant should I*
considered nnd rewarded at that meet
„g, i,v a re-n-'mi at'on, and that we
cannot present a better name for that ba»u.
office than that of Capt. J. E. Rrrcu.
We respectfully request you, Mr.
