ADDRESS OF DB. LIPSCOMB. /*
The Atlanta Era gives the following
abstract of an eloquent address delivered
by Dr.-A. A. Lipscomb, on the opening oi
the Public Schools in Atlanta.
He began by saying that this was in
deed a grand and holy day that witness
ed the inauguration otthe Public School
System in Atlanta. But seven yean ago
Atlanta was a pile of ashes, bat, thank
God, not the ashes ot hopeless despair
and remorse, not the ashes that Vesuvius
rained over doomed Pompeii, for the
germ of life was kept under the aiihes of
your desolation. You have received a
greater heritage than your proudest hopes
had ever dreampt of. Step by step you
advanced to your present proud eminence,
and yon have consummated your Tvgvn
oration ot enterprise at last in the estab
lishment and inauguration of the Public
of your city. I congratulate
iding the summer session of the
invention of the Stat» ;Agricultand
Society. I Many prominent
of the Society reside in this portion of
the State, and there are we have no
doubt many in all ppftionq of the State
who would like to see Athens in sum
mer costume. If it fc determine!' to
hold the neit session here, we fed |

your citicens, your Board of Education,

your labors. Glorious, indeed, ore the-

crowned and splendid work. The $5h,-
000 a year spent for the distribution of
thfi bl seringa of educollnu ie flfca,000
placed in the treasury ot Providence,
yielding interest a thousand fold. No
truth is more clear or better attested by
divine and human evidence than that a
people or a State which cannot, or will
not, care for its intellectual culture, will
never take care itself, or anything else.—
The first and highest duty of a people is
the guardianship of its intellect, its great
est crime is to neglect or ignore the great
trust of intellectual advancement placed
in iu keeping by the hand of the Creator.
Every State or nation is responsible for
the glory of the race, and how dreadful
will be the result of the final assizes when
the records of a people shall be unfolded
before the eye ot the Universe and it shall
be found to have been neglectfnl of its
most solemn duty, and failed to exkuiue
tbe buried treasures of intellect lying in
its people. Rather let us neglect to un
earth the golden wealth that lies hidden
in the veins of our mountains than

hope for the beneficial effects of.your
beautiful system of Public Schools. You
are not workimg in untried principles.—
The principles on which your system is
based are among the oldest in the world.
The future of such an enterpise Is not the
pfoprievy of chance, but of undcylating
laws. “ Whatsoever a man soweth shall
he also reap," and may I not also odd
whatsoever a community soweth, or a
nation, that shall it reap. Yon ore sow

soul, coining from the hand of God, wil|
ripen into a glorious harvest. It is a new
agriculture. The mind and the, heart are
ready for the share, broad acres, and a
rich and virgin soul. Till it in God’e

the Great Creator ot the Universe, and
heaven’s benediction will fUl upon your

ed at half-past two, makjng a pleasant
serial voyage and landing with the dar
ing erouaut, Mr. Garwood, upon the

South Carolnia Rail road.
In the evening there was an immense
attendance of ladies and gentlemen,
who witnessed the startling feats of
grand and lofty tumbling equestrian
ism, and the gymnasimn, with evident
delight. The whole programme was
carried ont to the letter, and lia a
manner that establishes this company
as one of the most perfect traveling
organizations of the kind we have ever
seen. The menagerie is well supplied
with the wonders of the forest. The
side show contains a Swiss warbler, a
dwarf, a magician, whose tricks are
unfathomable. There will b« a per
formance and balloon ascension to-day,
and a brilliant entertainment in the
evening.
