tress and garden fruits meet the eye.
The grapevine, to the cultivation of
which the aoQ seems to have at first
been employed, and for which it has
shown itself peculiarly well adapted, is
now giving way to other fruits that
planted, merely to economize
These will be cut out for fire
wood, whenever the growth of the wal
nut trees demand it Each walnut
tree yields an average of about 100
pounds of nuts every year. Besides
all these fruit trees, there arc 100 full
grown olive trees, 17 years old; 25
hearing almond trees; 50,000 Langu
edoc almond trees (plants); citron,
plum, apricot, quince, nectarine,
and berry vines and bushes of various
descriptions. Two acres were used as
a strawberry patch, and ripe fruit mny
be gathered from the vine at any sea
son of the year. Altogether there are
at tout 150,000 trees in this orchard
arid nursery.
Adjoining the Child’s orchard is
Bri waiter's orange grove, in which
there are about 800 hearing trees, be-
.'Me* a large number of young plants,
and fruit trees of other descriptions.
The area embraced hv it is compara
tively small, however, being only
about 19 acres.
A large number of other orchards,
inferior in size and the quality of fruit
trees contained within them, are dis
tributed within the city limits, among
which are those of White, Kohler &
Frohling, the Sisters of Charity, and
others.
The crop of oranges this year is an
abundant one; so abundant, in fact, as
to materially interfere with the growth
of the fruit Many of the older and
mere productive trees in some of the
orchards are actually shedding large
quantities of the fruit, failing either to
give it room on their branches or to
provide it with the nourishment re
quisite to bring it to maturity. In al
most every instauce the heavily laden
branches are supported by strong props
to keep them from being broken or
otherwise injured by the extraordinary
weight of their own product. Some
of the trees have probably 2,000 or
anges clinging to their branches; but
about 800 oranges per tree is consider
ed the average. The collection and
shipment of the crop has already com
menced. San Francisco is au unfail
ing and profitable market, whither it
finds its way. The orange shipments
from this county this year will greatly
exceed any previous one.
promise to yield creator reward to the ■ pomegranate, persimmon, shade trees,
horticulturist. Prominent among the j
fruits that thus promise to totally au-!
psraede the cultivation of the gripc-
vino aro the orange and lemon. In
many of the older vineyards, the vines
arc already being grubbed out, and
orange and lemon trees planted in their
stead. In referring to the orchard* of
this city, we can only mention those of
the greatest area and number of plants
contained therein, in our immediate
vicinity, confining ourselves more es
pecially to those containing large num
ber* of orange and lemon trees.
The Wolfskill orchard, situated on
the west side of Alameda street, near
tht railroad depot, has precedence over
all others in age as well as in extent.
It is, in a manner, the parent orange
grove of the Los Angeles valley. The
entire orchard, including the vineyard,
covers an area of about 200 acres, and
contains within 1,600 fruit-bearing
orange trees. This orchard is from 17
to 18 years old. It was for it that the
first zapia, conveying water for irrigat
ing purposes, is said to have been con
structed. We have been informed
that the majority of the orange trees
which it contains have been reused
from seed obtained from damaged
Sandwich Island oranges, and were
procured in this wise: The late Mr.
WolfskiU happened upon a time to be
in San Francisco. One day, while
strolling along the wharves, he observ
ed a schooner alongside discharging a
cargo of oranges from the Saudwich
Islands. 'Many of the boxes were in a
damaged and unmarketable condition,
and were being cast overboard as
worthless. This casual observer con
ceived the idea of using them for seed,
and immediately purchased them for
• mere trifle. These damaged boxes
he at once shipped to this place; placed
some of the seed in his own orchard,
aud sold die lolancc to his neighbors.
Thus the orange groves of this valley
sprang into existence.
On the opposite side of Alameda
street lies Keller lemon grove; which
covers an area of 145 acres of land, all
of which is under cultivation. It now
contains about 5,000 trees, permanent
ly planted, 2,000 of them being fruit-
Ivcnri ig lemon trees, and a large pro
portion of the balance being fruit-bear
ing orange trees. In addition to these,
the orchard contains an estimated ag
gregate of 10,000 plants, principally
Isxon. A large orou also is under the
grape vine. This is, however, being
planted in lonion and orange trees, to
which the proprietor proposes to finally
devote t he whole orchard, 50 acres hc-
iug thus transformed this sensor. This
magnificent orchard is the result of
eight years’ labor, the oidest trees in it
sot exceeding that numlicr of years in
age.
Th-* next largest is tliat of the
Child’s orchard, on Main street, which
is of about the same age as that of the
Wolfskill orchard, and embraces an
area of about fifty acres. Many of
the trees contained in it were planted
in 1856. It has uhout 450 fruit-bear
ing orange trees, forming a perfect
• piarc in the south-west corner. The
trees have been planted at regular in
tervals, 26 feet apart, and extraordin
ary pains are taken to keep the inte
rior of every tree perfectly free from
oil unnecessary growth, thus giving
the air a free passage through the
lira itches, which greatly advances the
rijiciiing of the fruit. Another por
tion of the orchard is devoted to apple
trees, there being r total of almut 500
Ixatring. all of which have been planted
in straight rows at regular distances.
Between the row* of apple trees, peach
trees havo been planted, for the pur
pose of economizing space. When the
growth of the apple trees requires it,
there will lie cut dowu for fire-wood.
