II. I.. SPENCER A CO Wm. A. Talmadire, 01*. POST OFFICE, CO I- AVENIR, ATHENS A few years siuce Seth Green, after seeing what Stephen H. Ainsworth was doing, and learning whatever he could from his little fish cultural establishment, bought an old saw-mill site on Caledonia creek, for two thous and dollars. The creek abounded in trout, and by erecting divisions, and barriers to their escape iu the old fore bay and raceway, he soon had au abundant supply of breeding fish. He had scarcely commenced artificial pro pagation, when a partner-was admitted by paying down six thousand dollars for n half interest; the place, which was bought for two thousand, being valued at twelve thousand. From wlmt I can learn, his profits in 1866 were about a thousand dollars, in 1867 five thousaud. This year he sells three hundred thousand spawn at from eight to ten dollars per thousand; and two hundred thousand young fry at from thirty to forty dollars per thousand the sales amounting perhaps to ten thousand dollars from spawn and small fry, to say nothing of the larger trout which lie sells from his ponds. Mr. Ainsworth experimented in fish culture for recreation, with a desire to diffuse a knowledge of the art, and to introduce it as a new industry, and does not follow it for any profit it affords. Still, with his small supply of an inch of variable water, he assures me he could have sold five hundred dollars worth of spawn and small fry every year, if lie had applied himself with that object. He has generally refused to sell spawn, unless the object of promoting fisbeuJturc induced him. So his sales have varied from a hun dred to five humtreil dollars per an num. In the mean time, in a quiet way, he hns stocked streams and ponds without remuneration. From his hugest pond, which contains alxiut fifteen hundred trout of various sizes, lie Jrw ibis spring taken out two or f l-.jVvs messes every week- enough foi his fundiy. ami a dozen men who are employed in his nurseries. He takes them all (from three-quarters to a pound and a half), with the artificial fly. When feeding them, they are so tame that they will allow a lady, who fs his neighbor, to lift them front the water, and appear to like to be fondled. I have just returned -(May 20th) from A fishing excursion, where I met him by np|Miint.incnt, and he gave me these Items verbally, III the town of Spring Water (I think, in Ontario county), New York, B few years since, a farmer owning the soarces of a tine spring brook, made three dams on the stream at small ex pense, and sold the property, which east him two or three thousand dollars, for ten thousand. So wonderfully had t!iu trout increased by natural propa gation in a few voars, that the place, otherwise of JitfJo value, commanded this price fur its fish. On Long Island, tuutr the city of New York', a person cultivates trout and allows anglers to fish his pond at n price per day. His Income from this emiree is about twenty-five hundred dollars per annum, so I am informed. The amount of his sales from young fish fur stocking the ponds of gentle men, who keep these preserves for fly fishing, I am not aware of. ' I would say that trout of one year generally commanded from ten to twelve dollars per hundred, and arc in ttannrul amongst Now Yorkers owning j Binds on Long Island. The following is an estimate of my own, based on my experience in feed ing curds. The numlier of trout is Mis' <r me us these intended to be raised in tha ponds of my friend Comfort, using round number*. thousand trout, averaging a pound, can be taken from the third, or it may be a fourth pound, after the enterprise has been in operation three or four ears.
