New Revenue Assessor.—We
have omitted to note the recent appoint
ment of Col. R. S. Taylor ns assistant
Assessor of Internal Revenue. His dis
trict embraces the ten counties of DcKnib,
Gwinnett, Walton, Banks, Hall, Franklin,
Jackson, Hart, Madison and Clark. Col.
Tayior is the first borne man we have
lmd in this portion of the district since
the system was adopted, and wc have no
doubt liis appointment will give satisfac
tion.
On Time.—There is an unprece
dented demand for produce and fertili
zers on time in this market. Our farmers
appear to be making arrangements for
a large crop. Judge Underwood bad a
profound sense of the danger of being
over-cropped, which it is hoped our
farmers duly appreciate. We hope their
hopeful anticipations of a large reward
will be lully realized.
Death of an old Citizen.—
Mr. Joseph Zebcne, for many years a citi
zen of Athens, died on last Sunday night,
lie was a native of France, and was
known to nil who have lived in Athens
during the last forty years. We believe
he taught the boys here to play “ kenu ”
ninny years ago, and he was more gener

name.
Town Printing.—Iu January
the Town Council passed a resolution
authorizing the fluance committee to con
tract with one paper for the publication
of council proceedings. The reason as
signed for this action was to reduce ex
penses, and to this end we supposed tlint
the Town papers would have been invi
ted to bid lor thu work. But we have
been notified by the Clerk ot Council that
it lias been given to the M'ntdiman, with
out conference with the Banner. The
sum heretofore paid was lar below regu
lar rati s.aiul was a mutual concession long
ago agreed on by the Town papers, and
not a matter of profit, or importance, be
yond subserving the interests of the Town.
We cordially approve of the determnation
of Council to economize, and trust they
will apply the pruning knife to other ex
penditures, whereby much larger sums
have been ami are still being appropriat
ed to little purpose. The Bannku has
cordially co-operated with the Board in
all movements looking to the wcllarc of
the Town, and though the evidence that
our labors are appreciated is not very
striking, our friendly zeal in that be
half will not be abated. Wc shall con
tinue to giye our readers anything of in
terest that wc can sift from their proceed
ings. and trust that they will soon be en
abled to lift the Treasury from its
straightened condition.

among those who have yet to lean* that mficenee ; of the resilience of Cotnmo-*
“ true cconoifiy ” consists in buying a first
class article. For example, pianos of
of various makers are offered at about
one-half the price of those of really first
class manufacture. Among the latter
none arc more deserving ot the encomium
“really first class” than those manufac
tured by Messrs. Wm. Knabe & Co., of
Baltimore, a firm which ' dates over a
third of a century, and whose Pianos for
excellency of workmanship, durability
and sweetness of tone, stand absolutely
unrivalled and containing many valuable
patented improvements, to be found in
no other instrument, made by the very
best workmen and of strictly first class
and seasoned nintciiul.
The so-called “cheap” piano may pre
sent a fair external appearance, but is
made of inferior and often entirely un
seasoned material, and soon becomes a
wreck which defies the art of the ‘tuner.
We make special mention of the piano,
as the most forcible illustration ot our
remarks, which can be applied to almost
every article we use in onr families.

an admirer of the beautiful; would
you not like to inspect some of the

The reader's attention is called
to D. Appleton & Co.'s advertisement,
in another column, of a new edition of
the leading novels of Fcnimore Cooper,
designed specially for popular circulation.
The first of the scries will be “The Last
of the Mohicans,” which will appear with
numerous new illustrations by F. 0. C.
Darlcy. The style of publication will be
the popular octavo form, with paper
covers, the purpose being to render the
novels as low in price as possible. Here
tofore there has been no edition of this
acknowledged head ot American roman-
cists suitable for general popular circula
tion, and hence the new issue of these
famous novels will be welcomed by the
generation of readers that have sprung
up since Cooper departed front us. As
time progresses, the character, genius
and value of the Cooper romances become
more widely recognized ; lie is now ac
cepted as the great classic ot our Ameri
can leiteraturc, and liis books as the
prose epics of our early history.

ting the rnnss on tire, put it out in a jitfy
with the “ Extinguisher.” It is evidently
a nandy thing to have in the house.
The Atlanta Conditulion says: The
Radicals have harped more on the ed
ucation hobby than nny other, and
have made it a matter of immense po
litical capital. Facts ate daily show
ing their hypocracv. The Bullock
committee has a letter of Bullock to
Gen. Terry, written May, 1870, urg
ing that the educational State fund he
used for general administration, and
tagging the bayonets to make the
Treasurer pay the moucy on his war
rant. Dr. Angier was trying to pre
serve the integrity of the school fund.
The incident is a fine illustration of
the claptrap of the Radicals about
this educational subject. ^

Senator Schurz yesterday convicted
Secretary Belknap, out of his own
mouth, of delivering arms to Reming

the Secretary had leamed that Reming

dispatches. Mr. Schurz ought to have
been a member of the Committee of

en him to ho pressont and question the
witnesses, enables him to render excel
lent service in eliciting the truth.

Political Prophesies.
“ Leo,” the Washington correspond
ent of the Charleston Courier, devotes
the 4th of March to prophesying. He
says the next 4th of March will be a
remarkable day. It will witness the
inauguration of a new President, and
that man will be Judge Davis. West
ern Republican Senators say he is the
strongest candidate the West can fur
nish, and will beat Grant in Illinois.
The new departure men do not want
the Democrats to carry New Hamp
shire just now, in fear that it will make
the Democracy’ too confident and pre
dispose them against the support of
Judge Davis. The Cincinnati Con-
vcntic will be well attended, but it is
now thought will adjourn their nomi
nation a month or two. He says from
all parts of the country assurances
come from leading and life-long Dem
ocrats that they will support tho Lib
eral Republican nominee, and while
the Democrats in Congress maintain
profound reserve on the subject, the
Grant Radicals cannot conceal their
inquietude. He says there will he
bolting at the Grant Convention in
Philadelphia. So much for proph
csies.

and Fifty Canary Birds.—“ Col.
Fisk, Jr.,’’ Sold for #19 50.—The
canary birds belonging to Col. Fisk,
that used to tune the pipes on the
steamers of the Nr rraganselt Line,
were sold at auction in New York on
Thursday last, tho 29th ultimo.-
The birds were sold as ” part of the
]*crsonal estate of Col Fisk, and were
250 in number. Tho captives seemed
to hear their imprisonment cheerfully,
and almost drowned the voices of tne
auctioneer and bidders in their efforts
to make more noise. There were ful
ly 500 persons present, and as all the
birds were guaranteed to sing, the bid
ding was quite active. The favorite
of the lot, “Col. Fisk, Jr.,” was
knocked off tn B. F. Celsey for $19 50,
This bird vras so tame that it was sc!
dom caged, but wandered at will about
the steamer Providence and the docks.
The birds named after M. R. Sim
mons, Jay Gould, Dr. Pollard, Ben
Blanchard and Commander Tilton,
were each sold at $12 to Mr. Leith.
Gen. Sheridan, a remarkably sweet
songster, waa Bold/to Mr. Seixas for
~50. “ FrankMcGwnn," V Char-,
ley Kimball," “ Gus. Fuller,” and
“ Charley McIntosh,” birds for which
much larger sums have been refused,
were bought by Mr. Self, an officer of
the Narragansett Linev for from 00 *-
