Improvement in Farmers.
Tho Mark Lane Erpress iu an arti
cle on farmers associations, says:—
There is nothing more noticeable when
reviewing the progress of agriculture
during the last quarter of a century
than the improvement which has char
acterized the conduct of our public
meetings or social gatherings. There
was a time when the long ciay pipe,
the somewhat boisterous stave, and the
“ hot stopping" were regarded as the
chief inducements for getting farmers
together. But these days have gradu
ally passed away, and, with some ex
perience of other large assemblies, we
Tiro inclined to think that nowhere will
•men as a rule keep closer to the point
•or carry themselves more becomingly
than the occupiers of land when they
draw into a focus at a Society’s show
or a Club discussion. More informa
tion has been disseminated, more intel
ligence developed by such a means
than through any other cause which
could be spoken to. By the further
aid of a good sellable report this sys
tem of mutual advantage comes to he
almost infinitely extended. Many a
man who would fight shy of a Royal
essay, although he found the pages
ready “ cut” to his hand, will eagerly
turn to see what his next door neigh
bor had to say, or some more famous
agriculturist to offer on the merits of
the principle under consideration.
The Sugar Crop.—Says the New
Orleans Picyunc: “The seed cane
in some parts of the sugar region of
this State is had. We hear that some
planters who contemplated planting
two hundred acres have stopped at
forty, on account of bad seed. Much
seed on the west side of Bayou Teche
lias been destroyed. Many of the
planters feel much disheartened at the
prospects. The season has been unfa
vorably for planting. Some planters
have not yet put in a stock of cane,
and have hardly made up their minds
what to do flue coming season. The
next crop of seed cane must he ex
tremely short.
Tiie Influence of Artificial
Manures on Clover Grass.—In
the valuable series of experiments
made by Mr. Laws, of Kochamstead,
of England, it was shown that nitrate
of soda, while it produced the ltcst
effects on grass of all the various man
ures tested, was completely destruc
tive to clover. On the. pint manured
with it, not only tic* clover, hut all the
weeds of a leguminous character, dis
appeared ; while on a plot mauured
with phosphate of lime clover flourish
ed admirably, and many weeds belong
ing to this order of plants appeared,
and grew luxuriantly. It is well
known to firmers who make u prac
tice of u.ing lime that it cncourgcsthe
growth of* the clovers. We have
found u great increase in the clover
drop when the preceding crop of wheat
had been dre-sod with superphosphate

the rarest specimens of artistic skill, in black and

afresh pleasure lo its friends, thu real value an*l
beauty of The Aldine will tie most nppreciab «1 af
ter it iva* been bound up at the close of the year.—
W hile ot her public publications may claim sii perior
cheapness a*compared with rivalsof a similar class.
The Aldine i* a unique ami original conception—
alone and unapproachod—absolutely without com
petition in price or character. The possessor of the
volume just completed cannot duplicate the quan

The lat»or of getting The Aldine ready *wi the

already exhausted, and it is now a scarce as well as
valuable book.
NEW FEATURES FOR 1872.
ART DEPARTMENT.
The enthusiastic support no readily accorded to
their enterprise, wherever it ha* been introduced,
has convinced tho publishers of Tho Aldine of the
soundness of their theory that tbe American pub
lic would recognize ami heartily *up|»ort any sin-
cerff effort to elevate the tone and standanl of illus
trated publications. That so manv weakly wicked
shells exist and thrive is not evidence that there
is no market for anything better—indeed the suc
cess of The Aldine from tb* start is direct proof of
the contrary. With a imputation so vast, and of
such varied taste, a publisher can choose his pa-
Irons, and his pai»cr is rather indicative of his own
than of the taste of the country. Asa guarantee
of the exeelleneo of this department, the publish
ers would l*cg to announce during th*' coming year,
