1 iTsffif)^Thc fabrication^' the richest
studs from its hair and fur was prac
ticed, while its milk and meat were
considered the most wholesome food.
We read of him as co-evsl with the
ox and sheep in those fair and flowery
regkksi. the East, where riyUmatjon
first dawned upon mankind. Ho has
hoen the universal companion of man
kind in their Eastern and Western
migrations in all known time. The
Goat entered into the mythological
systems ot the first nations. In the
sacred Scriptures constant reference is
made to him with the ox and the sheep,
as the riches of Patriarchal families.—
By the Jaws of Moses, its milk and.
meat are allowed as human food, and
he was used in the most remarkable
religious-- ceremonies. "Thou shalt
make curtains of Goat's hair as a cov
ering to the tabernacle,” is a sacred in
junction, while priests, rabbis and rul
ers were clad in gorgeous, brilliant
robes made from it. He is figured on
the sculptured moauiaeutsof Egypt in
their mystic embletas, religious rights
nhfrural labor. The /earliest Grecian
and Roman writers speak of him ns
yielding both food and raiment. Ills
lustrious fleece, dyed in purple poison
of Assyrian fluids, constituted the
gonreous attire of kings and emperors.
Cun A be «tid x then that the Goat
* is a valueless and unworthy animal?
if so, the whole world has been the
victim of stupendous delusions for fifty
centuries, and the far-farmed fabrics
of the looms of Cashmere, which
nought the world over at what ever
cost, at the same period, are but poor
and unsatisfactory evidence of such
delusion.
When v e consider the natural hab
itat of the Goat, it settles the question
os to his acclimation and productive
ness in the United States. For he is
as cosmopolitan as the dog or sheep,
He ig found amidst the snows of Nor
way and Siberia, and in the burning

mere. The fine varieties of the wool
bearing Goat live hi different countries
and latitudes, from Persia, on the
thirtieth, t&Siberia, on the sixtieth
parallel, north latitude; from China,
in the etui, to Asia Minor, in the west,
Even the most raluabhi aml most deli

Fifthly, they yield one-half as much
scoured wool as the best sheep in the
world, bringing one dollar per pound
and upwards, which affords a greater
return per head for fleece than the best
sheep, with less risk.
Sixthly, they are fine milkers, and
superior to fine wool sheep for mutton.
In Georgia, the Goat is destined to
be not only the poor man’s friend and
support, but a source of great wealth
to the State.
After the restless and disaffected
elements shall have gone to the far
West, and that great extent of territo
ry shall be filled up, and the tide of
emigration shall have turned back, and
our people become satisfied and happy,
and realize the great troth that we
have one of the best countries on earth,
then will be seen the bountiful flocks
of Angorito, as white and alky as ever
grazed on the green lulls of Asia Min
or, grazing and sporting on the hills
and bluffs of the Chattahoochee and
Etowah, and on the higher regions em
bracing the range of mountains from
Rabun to the Alatoonas, including
Mooat Yoaahand old Cohuttah; then
those grand old mountains, whose
storm-beaten brows mingle with heav
en’s passia n clouds, will beoorae lively
and interesting by the skipping and
gamboling of the kid. Then those
bleak and sterile regions will bring
their tribute of the gnest textiles, and
furnish their full quota of the com
merce of the world.
But the last, though not the least,
argument in favor of growing the Goat
in Georgia is to enrich our worn-out
lands. In the middle portions of the
State, in what is known os the cotton
belt, a large proportion of the lands
lying favorable for cultivation have
been cleared and worn out, and long
since tuhied over to old mother Na
ture to renew as best she may, conse
quently, they are now grown over with
sassafras, pine, briers, sedge grass,
<£c., and the better portion of the land
is now being cultivated and stimulated
with various compounds called guanos,
which will very soon take from it all
the vegetable matter it contains, and
leave this once rich and fertile country
entirely worn out, at last to be aban
doned by a disappointed people. These
partly worn out farms furnish fine
grazing grounds for the Goat, Let

the banks of the Chattahoochee.—Dal- jsffiew,** or before Uw first Monday jn April next*
