NEW LAWS.
The Legislature at its last session
passed two laws which everybody should
know. One is, that when a planter gives
a merchant or cotton factor a lien on any
property or for supplies to make his
crop, that if said property or crop is sold
„nd not applied to the payment of said
debt, such guilty party is liable to be
put in jail for one year.
The other law is to the effect that
10 per cent, interest is collectable by
law when inserted in note.
Also it has been decided by the Supe
rior Courts that verbal liens are as good
as written liens when the lacts can be
proven.

A Pleasant Affair—The en
tertainment given on Monday night in
aid of tbe Memorial fund, was a com
plete success. The exercises consisted
of choice pieces of music by several
young ladies, and declamations by several
boys— all of which were creditably per
formed, and received with warm ap
plause. Mr. John H. Newton called for
subscriptions to the memorial fund, and
several liberal citizens responded. The
receipts ot the evening were, we learn,
over $400.
Coals to Newcastle. — Our
merchants are daily selling com, flour,

upper counties. It is just to the farmers
of North East Georgia to say, that last
year was a peculiarly disastrous one to

are victims of the cotton mania, and are
neglecting food crops.
Political Indifference.—It
is a lamentable fact, that so many of the
leading citizens of our Town and county
are indisposed to take an active interest
in political affairs. There never was a
time when the issues before the country
were more important, and when the
counsel and concerted action of men of
experience was more needed, yet when a
call for a public meeting to take action
on uny political question is issued, it
falls almost unheeded upon the public
ear. This is not the way to vindicate
correct principles or preserve good gov
ernment.

The Legislative Nominee.—
The nomination of Dr. Durham, ot Wat-
kinsville, for the Legislature, by the
meeting last Saturday was made with
perfect unanimity, by acelumation, and
will be heartily endorsed ail over the
county. Dr. Durham is in the truest
sense a substantial man. He is a man of
fine sense and large general intelligence—
a self-reliant man, who will always dare
to do right, as his ripe judgment dic
tates.
We appeal to every Democrat in the
county, to take an earnest, personal in
terest iu the election ot Dr. Durham.
He will represent all interests and ail
classes fairly. His election will do much
to harmonize the unlortnnato local
schisms that have existed in the county,
and prepare the way for a harmonious
election next full.

Soldiers has been deferred by the ladies
of Athens, until the monument being,
erected by the Memorial Association,
should be completed. On Monday—all
save the upmost shaft being in place—a
large concourse of citizens assembled at
tbe monument, which was beautifully
adorned with flowers. After a prayer
by Rev. Mr. Lewis, A. S. Erwin Esq ,
delivered a chaste and appropriate ad
dress.
Mr. Erwin was interrupted in the de
livery of his address by the rain, and the
crowd adjourned to the Baptist church,
where it was completed.
The heavy shower prevented any large
attendance at the cemetery; but a num
ber went in carriages, and deposited
their floral offerings; a tribute no less
hearty because less profuse than usual.

Getting Even With Him.—
Two or three years ago, when our col

kidney coaxers, liver encouragers, and
other balms for the ills of afflicted hu

is always fond of a good joke, even if it

study of medicine, and the paper is not
of much use to me now ! ”
The hit was a good one, and wc have
been anxious for a chance to get even

that lie came to Athens and laid in,
among other things, a few sacks of gua
no, and started home. He lmd some
fragrant fluids along which served to
disguise the odor of the unctions plant
food, and on reaching the end of his
journey he dumped the sacks into a base

Government and upon the conduct of
the men who have been placed at the
head of affairs; and whereas," all ex

Government best administered is the
best, and that this is especially true
of constitutional Governments; nnd
wthereas, the fundamental princi
ples of constitutional liberty should
never be voluntarily surrendered or
compromised, but should, at such
times as the present, be prominently
brought forward and avowed: There
fore, we, the people of Clarke county,
in convention assembled, do declare
our adhesion to the great principles
generally known as State Rights and
harmonizing with the principles of the
Federal Constitution, and as expres
sive of our views and feelings, do ad
opt the following resolutions:
Jiesolved, That a consolidated cen
tral government is inconsistent with
American liberty, and that local self-
government, administered by the
States, each for itself, is essential
thereto.
Resolved, That the civil should be
paramount to the military authority,
and that the right to the great writ of
habeas corpus is a right that no free
people can surrender and at the same
time maintain personal or political
liberty.
Resolved, That the Democratic
party of Georgia should maintain its
organization and put forth its platform
of principles, and send proper repre
sentatives to the Baltimore Conven
tion, to act in concert with the rep
resentatives of all the other States.
Resolved, That in our opinion it
would best secure our rights to tiomi-
uate candidates of our own for Presi
dent, even if, as a matter of policy, it
became necessary to leave the electoral
colleges free to decide between Grant
and Greeley, as a choice of evils, mak
ing the best choice for ourselves which
the circumstance of the case would
permit.
Resolved, That while this is our
opinion, we leave our delegates free to
act in their discretion for the best in
terests of the country.
Resolved, That we cannot permit
this occasion to pass by, without giv
ing expression to our strong convic
tions that His Excellency, James M.
Smith, is the right man in tbe right
place, and to hold him up to the coun
try as a Governor worthy of the great
State over which he presides with such
Roman firmness and disinterested pa
triotism—at once challenging our ad
miration nnd commanding our love.
Resolved, That we send four dele

The Democratic Meeting.—The

The “ woolly taste” in multou is not j
derived from the wool. The peculiar |
flavor of ill-dressed mutton has noth-!
ing to do with the coat of the sheep, |
but arises from the absorption by the !
meat of the gases from the intestines, w«oiMiW.rf.-Atot«iBiic£ei» l *i**

which, as tho outside of the carcass ;
cools, cannot escape, and ure therefore I
absorbed by the flesh. There is a'
simple remedy. As soon as the aui-1
mal is dead let the hide be slit up
from the brisket to the tail, and to the
knees, by a quick motion of a sharp
pointed knife, inserted beneath the
skin. Strip the skin from the belly
and the ribs and legs, so that it will
be out of the way of the intestines.—•
Then open the sheep immediately and
disembowel it. All this ought to be
the work of about one minute or two,
or if it occupies five there will not be
sufficient time for the carcass to cool
sufficiently to cause any unpleasant
taste. Then proceed to strip the skin
from the back of the carcass. A sheep
should be killed by thrusting a sharp
knife through the neck, back of the
windpipe, without touching it, how
ever, but cutting the nrteries ; and as
soon as the knife is inserted it should
be twisted around as if to make u
round hole; there will then be no mis
take made in cutting the arteries, and
the death of the animal will be com
paratively painless and rapid. As
mutton should be -made the chief meat
diet of a farmer during the summer,
it is well that every one should know
how to slaughter and dress a sheep in
the best manner. Among other
trades a farmer ought to he a fair if
not a good butcher. Ho will not then
complain of wolly mutton.—Ayricxi-
urist.
