The cold winter, during much of

the prospect of a serious scarcity of

Don’t Neglect Sweet Potatoes.
Probably no crop of this latitude is
so little appreciated, in proportion to
its real value, as sweet potatoes. They
cost less, and are less exhaustive to
the soil than almost any crop that can

food for man and beast, and their
vines, well-cured, are a most impor

Best Breed of Fowls.
A “ Constant Reader,” requests
“ some information in reference to the
various breeds of “ fancy fowls,” about
which so much has been written.”—
We have no practical experience with
any 6ave the White Brahmas. We
bought a pair last year, and find them
far the best layers of which we have
any knowledge. One pullet lias this
spring laid 78 eggs—laying 25, 27,
and 2ti at each litter. Her eggs have
bce.i hatched by other hens, and we
therefore have not tested her qualities
as a mother, but neighbors who have
them agree that they are faithful set
ters and careful mothers.
A short time ago we wrote Mr. A.
B. Allen, of New York, inquiring
ai*outthe Dorkings. Here his reply :
New York, May 10, 1872.
-S. A. Atkinson Esq.,—Dear Sir:
Your letter to Mr. A. B. Allen is
rec -ived ; in his temporary absence I
lake the liberty of replying for him.—
You are right in supposing that he
holds the Dorkings in very high es
teem—perhaps not higher than the
light Brahmas, all things considered,
but for a different purpose. The
Dor! iings are admirable as full grown
fowls for the table—for Christmas,. (at
which time the cockerills are dispatch
ed), and Easter pullets ; for after lay
ing one clutch of eggs the pullets may
be quickly fattened and are even more
_«lclicious than “ V’irgin” cockerills in
the early winter; and late Dorking
pullets, fattened and killed before they
lay, furnish the tenderest and juiciest
of chicken meat—not excel!.-.1 by game

Most of these Hying bridges are so wide
that four horsemen can ride on them

no means improbable (as M. Pauthicr

China made known the fact more than

had suspended bridges, and that many
of them were made of iron, the hint

FEATURES FOR 1872.
ART DEPARTMENT.
The DiilltUM&stic support so readily accorded to
their enterprise, vrh»*rever it La* been introduced,
has convinced th«« publishers of The Aldine of the
'•>un lucss of their theory that the American pub
lic would recognise and heartily support any sin
cere effort to elevate the tone and standard of* illus
trated publications. That so many weakly wicked
sheet* exist and thrive is not evidence that there
is no market for anything letter—indeed the suc
cess of The Aldine from the start is direct proof of
the contrary. With a population to vast, and of
such varied taste, a publisher can choose his pa
trons, and his paper w rather indicative of his own
than of the taste of Dm country. Asm gaarantaa
of the excellence of this department, the imbli*h»
era would beg to annonnee during the coming year,
specimens from the following eminent American
artists:
W. T. Richards, Granville Perkins, James Siuiley,
Wm. Hart, F. O. C. Dar ey K. E. Piguet,
Win. Beard, Victor Xchlig, Frank Beard,
George Smiley, Wm. 11. Wilcox, Paul Dixon,
Ant?. Will, James II. Beard, J. Hows.
These pictures are being reproduced without re
gard to expense by the very best engravers in the
country, and will l>car the severest critical compar
ison with the best foreign work, it being the deter
mination of the publishers that The Aldine shall
lie a successful vindication of American taste in
competition with any existing publication in the
world.
LITERARY DEPARTMENT.
Where so much is paid to illustration and get up
of the work, too much dependence on apjfcaranrrs
may very naturally be feared. To anticipate such
misgivings, it is only necessary to state that the
«>ditorial management of The Aldine has been in-

In the construction of these wheels, ac
cording to the recently improved meth
od, the tire is of steel, and, when turn
ed up ready for the filling, is made to
taper inside, so that the inside diame
ter on the flange is one-eighth of an
inch smaller than on the other. The
body of the wheel is a pa[ior block
made of straw-board, cut into circles
thirty inches in diameter; pasted to
gether with ordinary paste, and con
solidated under an hydraulic pressure
of about thirty hundred tons, forming
a substance of amazing firmness.—
This t»lock, after being slowly dried
for nearly two weeks in a dry-house, is
turned and fitted in a common pattern
lathe. The turning tool is like that
usqd for _i
tfit? ti

course somewhat larger,
insure a perfect fit. An hydraulic
pressure of about four hundred tons is
then used to force the block into its
place. The tire is heated nearly to
the boiling point of water, thus insur
ing a perfect bearing when cool.—
When the paper block is in the lathe,
a suitable bole for a.cast-irnn hub is
bored through the centre; this hub
has a wide flange upon the end. Cov
ering the whole of each side of the
wheel are two side-plates of Norway
iron boiler-plate, which fit against a
shoulder turned in the tire. The hub
