The Pilgrim Last Night.—
There was it fine, audience last night,
assembled in Deupree’s llall to witness
Tlte Pilgrim, and we feel sure that every
one was more than satisfied with the en
tertainment. The beauty of this exhibi
tion is that all classes of our citizens can
attend without tear of having their feel
ings shocked. Indeed, the exhibition is
more interesting to members of our
churches, lor they will take a deeper in
terest in the beautiful scenes than those
who nre counted as among the ungodly.
Many of our citizens have witnessed the
panorama, hut not so gorgeous as the
present, which Wus painted at un enor-
1 mous cost, and is entirely new. As the
rules of our churches do not prohibit a
visit to such exhibitions, we have no
doubt that Dcnpree's Hall, will contain
one of the most refined and appreciative
audiences of the season to-night.

Bacon.—One bun lrcd thousand

J. II. HUGGINS & Co.,
Cleveland, Ga., June 19,1872.
Editor* Atlanta Sun: Thinking
you would like to have the facts in the
assassination of Col. M. K. Palmer,
of this county, the writer will submit
to you the following, as he knows
them to be true:
Col. Palmer left his home on the
26th of May, to attend Union and
Towns Superior Courts, leaving at his
home a very sick child. He went ou
to Towns Court, and, being very
anxious about his child, pressed
through his business there to return
to his family. He left Hiwassee on
Tuesday evening, the 4th of June,
6 o’clock, rode some six miles, and
stopped for the night. He started
early next morning, the 5th, for Cle
veland—his home—had gone some
four miles when lie was shot from be-
I bind by some black-hearted villain j PERFUMERY,
hid iu the thicket thirty steps from the i TOILET ARTICLES
road—the ball taking effect in the left ’
side, crushing the rib immediately
above the heart. He remained in his
saddle about seventy-five yards from
where he was shot. In all probabili
ty, he was dead when he fell from his
horse.
Court was iu session at Hiwassee
when the news of Palmer’s death
reached town. It spread like fire over
the court room. Everything was con
fusion. The people were outraged
and indignant. The Judge immediate
ly adjourned court, and he, in com
pany with all the members ot the Bar
from the south side of the Blue Ridge,
repaired to the place where the coward
ly deed was done. On arriving at the
spot, a scene there met, our eyes that
, would subdue the hardest heart and
! shock the strongest nerve. A noble,
generous, brave friend, lying upon
his blood, upon the highway, dead,—
A man who never injured another
without cause—who was true to a
friend ar.d openly antagonistic to a
foe—to he shot down like a dog! YVill
the guilty wretch escape justice?—
Never! never! ! we trust.
Col. Palmer had many friends in
this country, anil no enemies, except
those made by him in his brave and
noble effort to relieve his fellow-citizens
from the oporessions of dishonest men
and scoundrels.

The Legislature at its last session
passed two laws which everybody should
know. Oae is, that when a planter gives
u merchant or cotton factor a lien on any
property or for supplies to make his
crop, that if said property or crop is sold
ami not applied to the payment of said
debt, such guilty party is liable f to be
put in jail for one year.
The other law is to the effect that
10 per cent, interest is collectable by
law when inserted in note.
Also it has been decided by the Supe
rior Courts that verbal liens are as good
as written liens when the tacts can be
proven.

Changes in the Bankrupt Law.
—Congress, on Monday passed a bill
amendatory of the bankrupt law.—
It allows all exemptions allowed by
any State law on the first day of
January, 1871. It also exempts a
widow’s dower, or other estate in lieu
there of if the State law so provides;
also life insurance to the amount of five
thousand dollars. The time during
which bankrupts may lie discharged
upon payment of fifty per cent of their
indebtedness is extended until July
1st, 1873 ; judgments obtained against
persons or property ltcfore petitions in
bankruptcy are filled are to be first
mid fully satisfied. Changes in the
amtr.ud* of «pp linfiong registrars, in
the matter of marshal’s fees and other
less important particulars, are also
made.
Brilliant Achievements of
Southern Boys.—The Raleigh (N.
C.) Sentinel says :
It is a singular and pleasing fact that
Southern boys have borne off the high
est honors at Princeton College, New
Jersey, during the last three years.—
The late wonderfully gifted. Thcod-
erick Pryor, son of Gen. Roger A.
Pryor, of Virginia, was graduated in
1870 with higher honors than were
ever taken before by any student.—
In 1871, Skinner Lassiter, of Oxford,
N. C., stood foremost in his class, and
i; now at Berlin, Prussia, in attend
ance upon the University, his Prince-
t >n scholarship supporting him ; whilst
the other day, Richmond M. Pearson,
Jr., son of Chief Justice Pearson, of
N. C., bore off the highest distinction
in a class of ninety-six graduates.

Charleston and the Bine Ridge Rail
road.
We clip the following from the
Charleston Sews, of yesterday : “At
last a private stockholder has begun
proceedings against the Blue Ridge
Ring. There unquestionablylias been
wholesale jobbery, and only the high
priest of Radicalism know what has
become of the SI ,800,000 of Revenue
Bond Scrip. The effort is now mak
ing to compel the President and Di
rectors to account for all the money
that has been received, and to place
the road in the hands of a receiver.—
Does the City of Charleston intend to
become a party to the suit ? As the
holder of one million dollars of the
stock of the Blue Ridge Railroad, it is
directly to the interest of the city to
ascertain what are the liabilities of the
company, and what has become of the
scrip authorized to he issued for its
relief. At present the citizens are in
the dark. All that they know is that
one million dollars, involving an an-
ual tax of sixty thousand dollars, are
at stake. Unless the courts intervene
the whole of this will be sacrificed,
and the road may, besides, pass into
the hands of a ring, who will use it as
a meansof injuring the trade of Charles
ton. Are the private stockholders,
whose stake is small, to do all the
fighting? Prudence, justice and
common sense emphatically answer,
No? The city Council have already
called upon the City Attorney to re
port what is necessary to be done to
protect the interests of the city. That
official can surely report at the nest
meeting of the City Council: if he
cannot, let the Council move without
him. What is needed is Action ! Ac
tion ! Action!”
A Portable Ice House.—Take
an iron-bound butt or puncheon and
knock out the bead, then cut a hole
the size of a bottle-cork in the center
of the bottom. Put a wooden tube
twelve inches smaller into it, so that
it will not touch the edge of the butt,
within six inches all around it. Fill
up the space with powdered charcoal;
put two pieces of wood under the cen
ter tub when it is placed in the butt,
and fit a cover with a handle tightly
to it. Arrange hooks around the tub
on which to hang fish or meat, etc.—
Fill a bag two feet square with pow
dered charcoal to lay over the cover of
the inner tub, and fit a cover to the
outside one. Bury it four-fifths of its
Light in cellar, which must be dry;
wet ground will not keep it fresh.—
Fill the inner tub one-third full of icc,
which will not need to be renewed of-
tener than once a month. A hole
similar to the ono bored in the outer
tub should be made in the inner to
carry off the moisture. Keep the
whole closely covered, and you will
have a miniature ice house which will
preserve fish, flesh and fowl for a long
time.
