comparison is at once drawn decidedly

ducing new articles to the carriage
trade has been marked with success,
while many really valuable improve
ments have l>een brought into disre
pute by the mistaken policy of making
•hem at a low price, in Order to get
them introduced, hoping to increase
the price after they have become
known; the result is the article proves
a failure, not from any fault iu its
theory, but solely because of its infe
rior construction. This same idea
carried out in the construction ol the
canringe will give to the builder a bad
reputation, no matter how low his
price, while the high price will not

Tree Planting.—Iowa, by law-
law encourages tree planting. Every
acre of trees planted releases from tax
ation for ten years on $100 valuation ;
and every acre of fruit trees planted
releases from taxation for five years on
$30 valuation. Thus the tree planter
not only provides himself with a forest
or an orchard, but he at the same
time reduces his taxes. This is doubt
less wise policy on the part of the
govprtiment of that State, an 1 it is a
policy which might be adopted to ad
vantage by other States—especially
When it is ascertained that the juice
of the sugar beet contains from 10 to
13 per cent of crystallizable sugar, and
that the beet eau lie produced in un
limited quantities, most persons wil
suppose that the sugar problem is solv
ed. But beet juice, in addition to su
gar, holds in solutiag pectose, gum,
albumen, aspanigin, hetan, oxalic
acid, citric acid phosphoric acid, sul
phuric acid, chlorin*', and siilica. Be
sides there are variable proportions of
potnssa, soda, lime, iron, magnesia
rubidium, and manganese, from all,
or the greater purlieu of which, the
sugar must be separated liefore it is
fit for domestic purposes. Most of
these substances, as compared with
the sugar, are present iu very minute
proportions, yet these and their chemi
cal derivations defeat all atteiup*s to
procure thesugnr by evaporation mere
ly. The efforts to manufacture sugar
from beets or sorghum in this country
have failed just at this point; and even
in Europe, where the lieet sugar enter-

of the electoral beet was brought rapid

1 per cent (4 ounces) of caustic lime,

lime, was stirred into the juice. The
heat was then raised fully to the l oil
ing point, when it was again removed.
