Dorr. KFTWFF.N Lord Castlereagh and
M. Gerard de Meect. The attention of
LorddCa-stlereagh to Madame Grisi had for
some w eeks attracted observation. He was
ever foremost from the opera-box in express
ing his admiration of her acting and singing,
and in the society into which both were thrown
he did not fail, if possible, to engross her con
versation.
Tiie husband of Madame Grisi, M. Gerard
do Meley, a French gentleman of good family
is not a person to tolerate experiments of this
nature; and without consulting with a friend,
addressed a note to Lord Castlereagh, calling
tor the only reparation that it was in the young
nobleman’s power to give. luard Castlereagh
hist not a moment in waiting on that gentlc
uiun, and offering to give whatever satisfac
tion was required.
i mg. met at \\ ormwood Scrubbs, one sur
: con being i:i attendance. They were jilaced
:1 twelve J.UCO3 distance, and instructed that
the words to be given were—‘Gentlemen, are
you ready? Fire!’ accompanied by tiie drop
ping of a handkerchief.
Previously’ to the signal, Lord Castlereagh
c uI'M; his second to deliver into the hands of
M. f'rottrein, with full permission to use it
when and iio .v he pleased, a paper signed bv
him, Declaring in the most solemn manner, on
tii.? word ol a man tverliap*about to appear be
fore his Creator in a few minutes, that Mad
aiiiejGrisi h;ul not in the slightest manner en
couraged his attentions, that her conduct was
in all respects irreproachable, and that he had
never received a letter from her, or corres
ponded with her before. The word was then
given and the signal dropped. They raised
their pistols at the same instant. M. de Meley
carried his in a manner by which a surer aim
is taken, but by which tiie person is wholly
exposed, while Lord Castlereagh bore bis in
that firm which gives some protection to the
chest, hut vvliich is less effective in attack.
They fired at tiie same instant. Lord Castle
icaglfs ball did not take effect, while M. de
Melcy’s ]>:\s?cd through his antagonist’s right
arm lr’ur the wrist, across the waistcoat, graz
in- tne skin of the chest, and leaving a track
of blood. The noble lord was staggered by
the blow, but iti a second he shook off the
faintness, and received the attention of his
friends with composure. It was feared at
first, tint he was mortally wounded, as the
train of blood across the chest was a .formida
ble symptom hut it was soon found that though
his wri-t was ,--vere’y injured, his life was not
iti the least endangered. Most probably ho
s 'ed by the position of his arm, for if
!hand had been directed straight before
him, the !>"!! vvi ttld have lodged in hi.-? breast.
As it was, l.e ins received a very severe
wound, which it is to he hoped will be attend
ed with no serious result. Mr. Rentin'.;, on
seeing tiie condition of Lord Castlereagh, de
clared that as his friend was wounded, the af
fair could not bo carried further. ‘Not for the
present,’ added M. de Meley, who had letd his
ground to give assistance to his wounded nd
veir-sry. Mr. Iler.t nk iioped that the matter
would be altogether at an end, for that the
honor of M. de Meley was fully satisfied; and
tim written declaration of Lord Castlereagh
inm-t !■••: sufficient vindication of Madame Gri
si. M. de Meley sai l lie was not desirous of
carrying his resar.tment any farther. Lord
(Aasth-r "git was carried to the house of a
peasant, and there lie was attended l— the sur

removed to town in the course of the after
noon, and was, when we last heard, going on
as favorably as could be expected.

The thin.' is yet too new to be looked
upon even with calmness: and vve confess
ourselves to in: elated exceedingly, and
without any sensible decrease, as each
boat in turn arrives.
The immense future which is opened
to this continent by such rapid communi
cations from Europe can hardly yet be
even guessed at. Its chief, its great ben
efit in our eyes is, however, that it tends
almost irresistibly to make the nation*;
one iii interest, in feeling, and iii mutual
regard and trust. It is because peace,
perpetual peace, scents to us to be its nec
essary offspring, that \re specially hail the
success of Atlantic steam navigation. We
hope and believe that success is now es
tablished beyond peradventurc, and that
Aitnerica and Great Britain will talk with
each other's impulses weekly, and with
scarcely the interval of a fortnight be
tween what is said and done in one coun
try, and the knowledge and reflection of
it in the other.—[N. Y. American.
Tended Mercies of War.— At the
battle of Austerlitz, a division of the
Russian prrny which fought in alliance
with the Austrians, in retreating mistook
its way, and was gradually forced bv
Foult's advance, on a large extent of
smooth space covered with snow. The
sjKtce was found to lie a frozen lake. The
French halted at its edge, and commenced
a heavy tire of cannon, not on the unfortu
nate Russians, but on the lake. Tiie ice,
loaded with men, horses and guns, at last
gave way under the cannon halls, and in
another moment the whole division was
engulfed.
V) c would recommend the compilation
ol Mr. James E. Smith, of Milledgeviile,
and advertised for sale iti this city by Mr.
Plant. This book contains the names of
tiie fortune drawers in the Cherokee Land
Lottery, with a map of each district.
We have examined the work, and found
it correct and carefully complied. It
must prove useful to settlers in that sec
tion of the State, and to land speculators.
