Probably he would feel more 9 pieafantly situated were he quietly exer- I dlinq the offices of a more humble station, I when his want of honesty or sincerity I would engage less general attention, than 1 to be compelled to answer the accusations I c f a nation who usually, accuse but to I comltmn, and frequently inflift punishment I previous to enquiry. ■ THE Secretary-general La Garde, I iesto private purposes. As he is an offi- I cer in the service of the “ Virtuous Re- I public” of France, where perfect equali- I ay, equality of rights—of property —and I even almost of external appearance has I been imagined to exist, it may be a matter I timerated fu ms charged against this modest I “Republican Officer.” Frifon Rated to I ry-general La Garde, amounted one year I with another, to a sum not less than from I *b' to 7y° oo livres, exclusively of houfe rert, necessaries, and equipage. The em beilifliments and repairs made by his own orders in his apartments, had cost the Re gti'wc more tharf 150,000 livres. His houtehold expences, his carriages, and fever, teen horses, fix of which belonged to him, and the rest to the Republic, and his tabie ulennls, amounted every year at an average to nearly 35,000 livres. “ I HAVE now,” continued Frifon, “mentioned abuses, but I have still to ex. pefe the dilapidations of this creature, agent and Jpy to the Triumvirate. He has fur niihed his house at Surennes in the molt kiperb and elegant manner, at the nation al expense. He is at once proprietor of the Journals Le Reda&eur and Defenfeur dela Patrie, under the name of Gratiot, his colleague in iniquity. It has been fat isfaftorily proved, that even in the 4th year of the Republic, La Garde, under the firm of the Printing-house, robbed the nation, °f 485 livres in affignats, 248,333 1:vr «s mandats, and 28,038 livres in , specie, exclusively of 23,000 more, which "as an exorbitant charge.” Frifon con fided with demanding, that his obferva t! °ns hae referred to the proper committees. Agreed to. His speech was ordered to be printed; th e abuses complained of were -ned to the committee charged with fquirmg into the expenses necessary for ’E- service of the Bth year, and La Garde’s ‘lapidations were referred to the commit “•e inflitmed under that head. L A GARDE denies the truth of part c the above ftatement—’particularly as to I |'‘ e <• ach horses, he fays he has only seven f -tad of eleven—and which number he ‘•■disallowed bylaw—as to the other X f ence3 * le % s fomeare exaggerated, and fliers leva! b noticed several recent in r, ! ’f ‘ke improper conduct of some th t °^ C£rs 0i Pritifhnavy—we trust a.rufeof American seamen has not the t —but Jt tae vi Hainous praaice is continued, £ C ,°', S t 0 U 3 in language not to be difre f•, to prepair ourselves, and be in rea dinefs, to vindicate our own rights— and to repel any insults that may be offered us, from any quarter whatever. WEhavefeen several accounts of the efficacy of Yeast in putrid diseases, and in some instances a table fpoonful of barm diluted in spring water, given every hour with a decoction of bark, has produced the happiest success. A MAJOR M‘FARLAND, of Ha verhill has conftrmted a machine which he deems a ufeful invention, its object be ing to produce health and amusement. It is called the federal balloon, and is so constructed by means of an axle, {hafts, and four boxes, in the form of sleighs, ca pable of holding two persons each and turning on swivels, as to carry round from two to eight perfens, in perfect fafety and with any degree of velocity, in a circular sweep of from thirty to forty feet. THIS Balloon not perhaps so bold in design as that of Blanchards, may no doubt prove as ufeful—we think it might not improperly be called the Republican Whirligigg—the riling and falling in the balloon might naturally impress an idea of the rapid revolutions of the French govern ment, and any individual by experiencing the circular whirl for one hour, with half l he rapidity of a cannon ball at its firfl difeharge, would no doubt have his brain fufficiently revolutionized, and poffcfs al the real giddiness of a disorganizing demo crat. A Mr. Isaac Williams of Connec ticut, who has for some time indulged hh equality principles in Privateering againfi his fellow-citizens of the United States, had the modesty lately to pay a visit to hb friends in New-London, where immedi ately on his arrival he was waited upon b\ some of the officers of the place, and in vited to a tete a tete conversation before a Magistrate, by whose direction he was es corted to the public goal, and on Friday 27th ult. we understand he was politely attended to the circuit Court of the Unit ed States held at Hartford, where the re sult of a fair and public investigation into hisconduct was, a Sentence to eight months imprisonment and a fine of two thousand dollars.—Be ore the fame Court Mr. Holt, editor of the Bee, printed at New-London. is taken for trial for publifliing a Seditious piece in his paper, opposing the recruiting service, &c. Tfiofe who are disposed to a* bufethe dead—and insult the living—and who in censuring the character of a deceas ed person, indiscriminately condemn “ all his acquaintance” must seek some other vehicle for conveying their sentiments to the public than the Augusta Herald. We are sorry to communicate the news of the death of Captain Henry Croffle of this place, who died at Savannah on Fri day last, after a (hort illness: His loss is sincerely lamented by a numerous acquain tance, to whom he was endeared by many amiable qualities.
