BEAUTY AND VIRTUE;
A CONTRAST.
WHERE docs beauty chiefly lie ?
In the heart, or in the eye ?
Which doth yield us greatcfl plcafurc,
Outward charms or inward treafurc f
\V hich, with firmcfl link doth bind,
J 'flic luster of the face, or mind ?
| Beauty, at feme future day,
Mull vainly dwindle to decay ;
And all its cn-rgy and 6rc
Ignobly perish, and expire :
Low leveil'd with the humble Have,
Alike, must moulder in the grave.
’ But mborne excellence, fecurc,
Shall brave the dorm and still endure;
Time’* Icif subduing arm defy,
And live when Nature’* fclf shall die,
Shall Hand unhurt amid the blafl; '
And longer than the world shall lull.

[The tragic play of “ Pizarro,” tranf
iated by Mr. Brinfley Sheridan, from the
German of Kotzebue is perhaps one of the
mult interesting dramas ever produced on
the Englilh ft.ige since the days of Shake*
’fpcare. The following beautiful extraft,
|is from the fir ft feene of the second aft,
Where Cora, fitting on a bank, at the root
bf a tree, surrounded by a wild wood, is
plaving with her child, while Alonzo , her
jhufbmd hangs over them with delight and
jthcerfulnefs. Rus. Gaz ]
Core. Now confefs, does he resemble
thee or not ?
; Alonzo. Indeed he is liker thee—thy

Cora. But his auburn hair, the colour
bf his eyes, Alonzo. O! my lord’s image,
sand mv heart’s adored ! (Prefing the child
Jo her bofotn.)
Alonzo. The little darling urchin robs
bn?, I doubt, of some portion of thy love,
my Cora. At least he llmres cardies
[which till his birth were only mine.
Cora. Oh no, Alonzo ! A mother’s love
’for her sweet babe, is not a Health, dear,
[from the father's store ; it is a new delight,
jthat turns with quicken’d gratitude to him,
'the author of her augmented blifc.
Almta, Could Cora think me serious:
Cora. 1 am sure he will speak soon;
then will be the last of three holydays al
lowed by Nature's fanftion to the fond
anxious mothers heart.
