As a verjt’good thing, when prov’d in the trial,

The marrow ot practice lies all in the fee ;

WHAT a croud !—I paSed through it
vt itlvdirticulty—a poor wretch was going
to prison for debt—he lifted up his dream
ing eyes to heaven, as if supplicating for
liberty; my heart felt his anguiftl. I en
quired how much he owed his merciless I
creditor —“ ten pounds, besides charges.”
“ Good heaven ! to be deprived of liberty I
for ten pounds !" The fmalinefs of the I
fuai gave me delight’; I (lept up to him, and
giving him ail the money I had in mv
pocket, bade him purchase his liberty, and I
never despair, though furrouuded with dis- 1
tress. He would have knelt in the dirt to I
thank I prevented him. The man
was honed —he was an hulband
and father—he had leen better days. The
rnob lhouted for jov ; and I left him with
greater fatisfa&ion in my heart than a no
bleman feels on entering the drawing room
in a birth-night snit. .
“ Companion,” laid I, “ has this day
drawn from my purse more than I could
afford—but I will wear this old coat and
hat twelve months longer than I intended,
and that will alpiolt make things even—
mv coat is aimoft rusty, ’tis true—but—
the debtor is tree.”
