» r - gaaaw—mags as; ■ HERA L D. u s tl a, ■ v r D M E S D A Y, December 25, 1799. i THE number of advertisements have crouded upon us requiring! attention, have precluded the Bofibility of inserting this week, articles ■ en erally deemed more interesting; and Re late hour at which these were mostly ■refer-ted, prevented a supplementary M. et> which we propose in future to-fur ■iih, fliould the number of our advertising ■orrefpondents continue to increase : ■n jr indulgent readers however will not on mils account be deprived of much news : for no mail was received by either the last ■Charltfton, or Northern Post, we fliould ■have had to draw intelligence from the ■f un ds already in our poflefiion, which we ■confei's would not have afforded an abun ■ <bnt supply of matter, interesting from its importance or novelty. OUR literary friends will we hope recoiled, that their lucubrations would be gratefully received at the Herald Office, to f ive place to the works of genius will ever afford pleasure to the Editors ; and we fliould imagine that those whose capacity enabled them by their writings to serve us and entertain the public, would from fiich exercise of their talents derive no little to themfeives. While we 5 solicit the assistance of our ingenious friends, we cannot help noticeing an ori ginal excuse, of a correspondent, for not frequently favoring us with mental productions, whose good intentions were not to be questioned, and who was himfelf clearly of opinion that he was cut out for an author—He observed—that “there were so many writers upon every fiibject, that in truth there was nothing left for him to write upon ; unless he were to be a servile imitator of others; he could write on old fubjedfs as well as any body—but new things and new ideas in this age of the world, were out of the ques tion, and therefore he felt above writing at ill.*’ To have excused ones felf from writing, in confequcnce of the many calls upon one at this buiy season, would have been a common kind of excuse ; but to have difeovered, that there was nothing “left in the wide world'’ on which to exercise ones mental powers, must, we thnik, be an original difeovery of our friend': and the exclusive advantages of this ingenious thought, ought to be fecur* ed to him by patent. {ft Divine service will be performed in Church this day at the usual hour, by the Reverend Mr. Hull. Died—Or. Sunday the 15th inftanf, Elijah Clarke, Esq. late a Major General cf this state, whole meritorious achieve ments during the late revolution are so well known, we deem it unneceflary to particularize.
