““a u g u s t a,
WEDNESDAY, March 26, 1800.
IT appears from unquedionable au
thority, that a number of counterfeit fifty
and hundred dollar bills of the bank of the
United States, have been brought into
some of the Northern ports from New-Or
leans, and that many counterfeit ten and
twenty dollar bills of the fame bank have
lately been iflued into circulation by a per
son from Kentucky who was lately com
mitted to goal in Richmond, Virginia; we
think it probable that many of these bills
may have reached this date, and we fug
ged to our readers the propriety of being
ftri&ly on their guard againd them.
A NUMBER of counterfeit dollars
in imitation of American dollars, h»ve
lately we are told appeared in New-York,
some of them may probably find tlieif way
to this date, it is said they are some what
difficult to detect, but that the milling is
not well executed.
WHILE a nonfen Gcal report has
been circulated, that the aftion fought by
Capt. Truxton, was with an American
frigate, we presume it will not be unplea
sant to our readers, to fee fome>particulars
relative to the veflel, with which this gal
lant and desperate action was fought; for
this therefore, we refer them to the date
ment under Kingdon head.
Kingston (Jam.) Feb. 17.
By a schooner from Curacoa, arrived on
Saturday, we learn, La Vengance French
Frigate, mounting upwards of 50 guns,
arrived at Curacoa 12 days ago, entirely
difmafted, in an aflion (he had with the
American Frigate Constellation.
She was bound from Guadaloupeto Old
France; her crew confided of 430 seamen,
soldiers, &c. among the troops were Gen
erals Pillarde and Le Grand.
The Vengence had upwards of 30 men
killed, and is so much damaged that it is
iiippofed that she will never go to sea a
gain.
Capt.Pilotcommandedthe above French
frigate, and is the fame officer who com
manded La Renomme Frigate, when taken
by one of our seventy fours.
Capt. Butler, who arrived here in the
Queen charlotte from Martinique, which
place he left on the 28th of December,
informs, that, previous to his failing, he
few the lieutenant of his majedy’s diip In
vincible, who told him he had seen the
Vengence at Point Peter, Guadaloupe,
that die was a rated 54 gun diip, but
mounted 62 guns, and had a crew of cho
sen men on board ; he added further, that
it was said die failed very fad.
