HH MUSES RETREAT.
I p THE UNFORTUNATE.
i Death! thou foothtt of the woe worn breofl,
K 4*l me heal the anguilh of my tortur'd foul,
H Si ll all *ly forrowsand my lint to rest,
I K'Jkdteaeh these steps to reach my dtftin’d goal
■ Bplinhat cold stone which leads to mansions pioud,
S Wml lay my refttefs, aching head and die ;
■ B|tousht but thele rags to form my humble shroud ;
■Hd father’s soothings, and no mothei’s sigh.
I | t ,hus Anna wept once grac’d withevery charm,
I flwith angel purity and virtue bleft;
Brotefting fpiritslhelter’d her from harm,
guardian angels watch’d her midnight rest.
Kut now deje&ed is that Anna’s form,
Bjkt her betrayer’s door (he lays he head :
Bjnhe heeds son re the “ pelting of the storm,”
wliut finks resistless mid the fiient dead.
| Mfyh ! lovely Anna! haft thou funk to rest ?
■ fcalmed are the throbbm 7 *, or that woe-fraught heart;
■ ||Oh! may the turfli* lightly on thy breast;
■ JgThou beautious victim to Seduction’s art!
I #At mornoflife in youth’s bright colors dreft,
IjEWhcn foft eyed love up-heaves the oppreflive sigh,
P-juThen novel pleasure fires the artless breast,
Bp And fears stand trembling in the maiden’s eye.
Bfllu heal h’s gay morn in blulhtng rofcate bloom,
K When budding beauties drink the living ray ;
By Nipt by a froil, they wither in the tomb,
IK 1 The (hort lived flow r* of a Cummer's day.
Eff‘ Ah Henry ! spoiler of the fair one’s fame !
■' Thine is the lot to bear a life of woe,
i f To feck for pleasure and experience pain,
[£ To find thy conscience ever as thy foe.
[■* Tbo’ wealth fti mld favor, and tho’ fortune smile,
fl Yet still to unrementing death they tend :
Jjf What tho* ’tis yours, to rear, ambition’s pile ?
■ There pleaf’re’s dream & pride’s vain trophies end.
fl No parents then (hall hang upon thy breast,
P Kind heaven entreat ing for thy longer stay,
No l’eraphs hail the to eternal rest,
Nor point thy oaffage to the realms of day.

ANECDOTE.
THE Chinese arc laid to preserve to
the end of their lives, a great degree of au
thority over their children. Os this ma
ny curious instances areadduced, of which
perhaps the following is not the lead ex
traordinary. An old woman of eighty was
one day beating her daughter who had al
ready attained the age of sixty. The
daughter seemed to fuffer exceedingly, and
burst into tears; upon which the mother
fulpended her blows, and impatiently en
quired why (he wept so bitterly, observing
that (he often had chastised her more se
verely without compelling her to weep.
To this the daughter replied, that the only
reason why (he wept was, that from the
feeblenefs of her mother’s blows, (he was
concerned to perceive that her strength be
gan sensibly to decay.
