THE LONDON GAZETTE EXTRA
ORDINARY, Sunday, June 1, 1800.
Admiralty Office, May 31.
Extrafl of a letter from vice-admiral lord
Keith , commander in chief of hit majeftfs
fvips and vcjjels in the Mediterranean , to
Evan Nepean , Esq. ftcretary of the admi
ralty , dated on board the Minotaur, off Ge
noa, the 3 d and 6 t/i of May, 1800.
On the 29th ultimo, general D’Ott
communicated to me hL intention of mak
ing a general attack on all sides of Genoa,
and requested co-operjtiou, and that we
might fettle the plan.
At three, A. M. on the 30th, the attack
began on the part of general D’Ott, by
signal from St. Pierre D’Arana, on Quar
to, St. Mattino, and St. Chriftino, by gen
et al Gottcfheim, who prefled the enemy
up to the walls near the (hore, under cov
ervf the fire of the Phoenix, Mondivi,
Entrcprenante, Vietoire tender, launches
and boats of the squadron. The affair
continued till night, when the Austrians
retired being unable to dislodge the ene
my from the little fort of St. Martino, si
tuated on a hill, two miles from the sea.
Gen. D’Ott was more fuccefsful in seiz
ing Dui Fratelli by efcalade, and blocking
up Diamonti ; on the fide of St. Martino
the Fiench durst not follow the Austrians,
in consequence of a well directed fire from
thefquadron.ltrainedthe whole day. Shells
from the town fell amongst the lhips.
The French, however, on the fame even
ing, attacked and repoflefled themselves of
of all their former pofis. It is reported
thev loft a great many men as far as 1500.
On the 2d, the enemy made a defpera’e
fertie on lieutenant general D’Ott’s centre,
at Seftri.—they kept advancing in col
iimns to the muzzles of the cannon re
peatedly for an Lour ; and did not retire
till they loft 1200 men, of whom 20 offi
cers and and 280 privates are prisoners.
On the 4th, I received a letter from the
general, informing me, that the Frerich
had retired to Sr. Efpirito, and had fuf
jained a cofiderable lofson the 2d at Loza
no. He fays he was much indebted to
the fire of the Phmton,&c. and to the good
management of captain Morris.
Oh the 7th, two mortar boats and two
gun boats arrived from Naples, The
fame day I heard from general Melas that
the French had burnt their magazines at
Aleflio, and had retired to Port Maurice ;
and that captain Morris had seized twenty
corn velfels and a depot of arms ; and gall
ed the enemy’s rear through several miles
of their retreat. Two of Maffena’s ftaff
were taken in a small boat near Albagna
in attempting to escape from Genoa.
Copy of a letter from vice-admiral lord Keith
to Evan Nepean, esquire , dated Minotaur,
off Genoa, 1 oth of May.
Sir, I have the honor of inclofing a co
py 9fa letter received by me at a late hour
last night, from his excellency general
Melas, which will convey to their lord
fliips the mod fatisfaftory accounts of the
progress of the Austrian arms, and of the
retreat of the enemy’s army from the Ge
noefe territory.
I have the honor to be, &c. See.
KEITH.
Evan Nepean , esquire.
Head-quarters Oncglia, Bth of May.
My Lord,
We have been very fuccefsful yester
day. The right wings of the army, com
manded by general Elfnits, who was on
Monte Carro, attacked the enemy at
Muchia dellePietra, and fucceededfo well,
that at nine o’clock in the morning vic
tory had declared in his favor. The gen
eral of division Gravier, with a great num
ber of officers, and 1500 non-commiflion
ed officers and privates'were made prisoners
The right of the enemy, informed of the
defeat of its left, did not delay retreating
from Capo di Berta. We have pursued
him beyond Port Maurice. Fifteen pieces
of cannon of different sizes, have been ta
ken from him along the coasts. Onr loss
has not been considerable; but I regret
he loss of major- general Brentano, mor
tally wounded, and naajor Casfate killed.
The corps of gen. Elfnits is now at St*
[Hal/ in Advance.

ARMY Os EGYPT.
General Del'aix, in a letter addreded to
the minister at war, dated the lazaretto of
Toulon, 15 Floreal, May 5, gives the
following details!
“ He let out from Egypt on the tath
Ventofe lull,(March s)after having negoci

flopped by the Dorothea Englifit frigate,
and conduced to admiral Keith, at Leg
horn where they performed quarantine.
Admiral Keith, authorized by his go
