An Ordinance
so protect the City of Augusta from Rav
ages by FIRE.
■Q E it Oraaind by the City Council
' of Augusta , That for the fafe
keeping of the Fire Engines, and for the
purpose of hiving them conveniently
situated in case of an alarm by fire, there
(hall be erefted two Engine Houses, in
Broad-street, one near the pump at the
Market-house, to be known by No. i,
and the other near the pump opposite
to the lot of MefTrs. Ker and Hogarth,
to be known by No. 3 ; and that there
(hall be provided three ladders forty
f«et long each, one to be kept in some
convenient situation near each of the
engine houses; and that there (hall also
be provided one hundred leather fire
buckets, of the usual size, in addition to
' those already belonging to the city, to
be numbered, and labelled, “ Corpora
tion of Augusta” and which said buck
ets fnall be divided as nearly as may be
between the engine houses now diredted
to be built, and the one (handing on the
lot of the late Andrew Innes, Esq. de
ceased, which (hall be known by No.
2 ; and each engine (hall be numbered
to correspond with the engine house
at which it is kept, and shall al
ways be considered as belonging, for
fafe keeping, to that particular situa
tion ; and in the engine houses (hall be
kept the fire buckets, and such fire
hooks, ropes, axes, &c. as the City
Council may deem it neceflary or prudent
to provide.
2. And be it further ordained , That
there (hail be appointed, at the firft
meeting of Council after the promul.
gation of this ordinance, and annually
thereafter at the firft meeting of the
City Council in Oiftober, a fire master,
who (hall have (uperintending charge
of the engine houses, the buckets, &c.
the keeping the whole in repair, and
every thing appertaining thereto ; and
shall also direct the mode of working all
the engines when called out either for
exercifeor in times of alarm ; and there
shall also be appointed, at the fame time,
an alfiftant fire master for each engine,
who shall superintend the working there
of, and he (hall keep a key of bis en
gine house, and the fire master (hall keep
keys of the whole. And if any person
on being eledted fire master (hall refufe
to accept the appointment, he (hall for
feit and pay the sum of twenty dollars ;
and if any person on being chosen an as
sistant fire master (hall refufe to adt, he
(hall forfeit and pay the sum of ten dol
lars, unless fatisfadfory excuses are re(-
pedtively made to the Council.
3. And the more effectually to accom
plish the objects of this ordinance , it is
hereby further ordained, That the names
of all lot holders, and persons residing
within the limits of this city and liable
to taxation, apprentices and paupers
only excepted, (hail be entered in a lift
which (hall be made out by the fire
master, the city marflaal, and the clerk
of the council; and the names of the
persons so enrolled (hall be entered in a
book to lie provided by the fire master,
at the publick expense , which lift (hall

ced in the apartment of the said box No.
i and-there shall be drawn monthly
therefrom in the presence of the fire
master or one of his aftiftants, and the
intendant, the clerk of the Council or
one of the members thereof, thirty-fix
names, who fnall be the persons to as
sist in exercising and working the en
gines (or the month for which they shall
be drawn, the firft drawn twelve for
the engine No. i, the next drawn 12
for No. 2, and the remainder for en
gine No. 3, and the names so drawn
out (hall be put into the apartment of
the said box No. 2, and so on until the
whole number (hall be drawn out, when
the drawing (hall be made from No. 2,
and returned into No. i,andfo on al .
ternately ; and it shall be the duty o r
the Marshal to give the persons so
drawn three days notice of the time and
place of working the engines, and every
person so notified is hereby required
to attend accordingly, or to fend an a
ble hand, who (hall be under the direc
tion of the fire master and aftiftants in
working and exercising the fire engines,
and not depart until difeharged bv one
of them ; and it fhali be the duty of the
fire master er aftiftants, previous to
working the engines to call over the
lift of the persons notified as aforefaid,
and if any person shall fail to attend or
fend an aMe hand as aforelaid, he (h ft
be fined in the sum of one uoliar ; and
immediately after the working of the
engines, the fi-e master (hail turnifh
the marftial with a lilt of Inch persons
as have neglected to attend or made dc
falt, and the marlhal shall immediat lv
thereafter call on each defaulter for the
fine aforefaid ; Seventy-five cents of
which, when colledted, (hall be pud j

4. And be it further ordained , > hat
the persons drawn as aforelaid. (h til he
considered as the fire company tor the
month in which they (hall he drawn
and notified, who (hail be liable to he
called out for the purpose of worker,
the engines, at least once in the monr , ,
and in the event of an alarm by fin
within that month, it (hall be the dutv
of the persons so notified, to retort im
mediately to their respective engine
houses, there to render such alfiftance as"
may be required under the direction of
the fire master or his aftiftants ; and
any person failing to attend or (end a
fubftitude as aforefaid, (h ill be liable ro
a fine of five dollars ; and the firft en
gine that shall arrive at any place of fire
(hall be entitled to the sum of twelve
dollars, to be divided among the per
sons working the fame, and five dollars
to either of the aftiftants, whose vigi
lance is thus manifefted ; and immedi
ately on the arrival of an engine or en
gines at such place, the fire master or
aftiftants are hereby authorifed to call
on the by-standers to fall into the ranks
for the purpose of handing water, or to
render such other services as may be
considered the most cfFedtual in arresting
the progress of the fire ; and if any per
son (hall be found (landing idle during
the time of fire, and (hall refufe or negi
letft to render such assistance as may be re
quired, he (hall, upon the report of the
fire master, or aftiftants, be fined by the
Council in a (urn not exceeding thirty
dollars.
5. And be it further ordained, That
immediately after the fire (hall have
ceased and the danger is over, the fire
master and aftiftants (hall return the en
gines to the refpedlive houfcs.ttogether
with the buckets, fire hooks, &c. and
cause the ladders to be returned to their
proper places, and any person who
shall carry o(Fany of the said fire buck
ets, and refufe to return them, (hall for
each and every bucket so detained, for
feitand pay the sum of five dollars.
