** MORAL POLITICKS.
The following original article isfiom the Bal
timore Telegraph it deserves to be read with
attention, and with correct minds it can
hardly fail of being perused with approba
tion:—
“ It has been the tisua! cry with those who
have accurately noticed the market price of
popularity, that if the public appetite can
relish nothing but falsehoods, falsehoods they
must have. They say that populaiity can be
acquired by no other means, and as this is an
article so imperiously demanding the sacri
fice of honor and truth, they never can rise in
power unless they are previously disposed to
make such a sacrifice. They have distin
guished slanders of this class from all other
calumnies, by the appropriate definition <>f
electioneering falsehoods They have b■ •»
known to laugh themselves, at the extent ol
the mischief which they may have done by
such means.
We do indeed tremble for the future wel
fare of our countiy, when we consider that
such enormous principles as these, are incul
caled in the minds of ingenuous youth. Our
children, those to whom the most sacred of all
human trusts the grandeur and prosperity of
cur country is hereafter to be confided, are
told that calumny and systematic slander are
to be rewarded by office and emolument. —
'They ate told that thedistruguishing attribute
cf their creator is to be bartered for money
They ate told that the people must be hi nded
to their own interest, and that hypocrisy, de
testable as it is in private life is the list duty
that u man owes to Ids country. Under such
disciplined infamy, the youtli is brought for
ward as a candidate for public favors He lias
robbed innocence of it a legitimate influence in
the public community ; he has calumniated
the hoary hairs of virtue ; he has persecuted
patriotism to the shades of d, -11168110 retire
ment ; he has gained this nobie victory, and
he is now a successful Candidas for public of
fice—While popularity, that capricious God
dess is thus bestowing her honours and favors j
while virtue is thus dtiven with the whip of
scorpion slander, to the shades of retirement,
while a man is obnoxious and distrusted, only
because he is honest, cm countrymen are
abused, insulted and oppruised ; driven, per
haps, to desperation by th-ise who rule their
destinies. They are told then, that all their
misery is producedVy those private men whom
they had before hunted Tom public confi
dence ; they are called Uaitois, because they
would fj in bring their fellow citizens to their
Senses ; because they have spoken truths, and
will not abandon their honnnr at a time when
they are but a few mo.’e steps Loin the tribu
nal of their God.
We know that all this will be pronoun-ed
Winder and calumny'— Would to God that
these were only the chimeras of fancy. The
fallowing antxdj;e yfill exemplify how far
this picture is a cor. let likeness of the fea
tures of the present times. A gentleman in a
neighboring state, whose profession exempted
him from active politics, but whose opinions
Were known to he htitile to the party in po »er,

where he resided, with the coarsest abuse and
calumny. He at last personally applied to the
editor of the paper, and required ati explana
tion. The editor promptly told him that Ins
character was above his editorial polution, that
liis pat ty required a target for the arrow* of
his oalumny, and that he had selected him be
