AUGUSTA HEIiALI).
FRIDAY, MARCH 6, 1818.
WE have received no very late intelli
gence from the troops engaged in the contest
with the Indians; since General Jackson,
has reached the army, we have understood
he has instructed the officers not to give anv
information respecting the movements of
the troops, or to communicate conjectures
as to any intended plan of operations ; deem
ing it no doubt injurious to the service, that
publications should be made disclosing any
contemplated expeditions, or that accounts 1
should go abroad, which from being hastily
penned, may not contain that correct infor
mation, which ought to be given in papers
in some degree assuming an official form
The General we understand shares equally
with the soldiers, in their hardships aud
toils.
One thousand seven hundred and thirty
four bags of Cotton, aud three hundred hogs
heads of Tobacco, arrived at Savannah from
this city, ou Friday the 20lh uit. in six boats.
Latest from England.
We are indebted to Captain Beetle, of
the schooner Milo, for j\lew-York, papers to !
the 23d ull. containing a summary of the
English papers to the 4lh of January.

Newspaper Reports. —We find it current
ly reported in the newspapers, that Mr. Gal
latin is about to retire from the situation of :
our Minister to France; a id, as it is said in ‘
private conversation, that, with ail his well- i
ktiowu economical Habits, he lias, like eve- j
Ty other Minister whom we have seut abroad,
found the salary of his office w holly made- '
quate to his support, u the rumor of his inten- j
tied return is possibly not without fouuda- 1
tioti.
It is probable there is less foundation for
the various rumors, whatever plausibility
the merits of the gentlemen named may give
to them, respecting Mr. GalltuTs successor, :
who certainly lias not been designated, even
in thought, before the intention of Mr.’ G.
to retire is ascertained.

The Senate, on the 16th nit. receded :
from its amendment to the General Military i
Appropriation Bill, aod it now only re

Philadelphia, on the 13th List, were at 142*.
The present Banking Capital of the State

million of Dollars. In addition to this
immense sun, applications are now before
the Legislature for new B mks with capi

The New-York Columbian says, “It is
rumored that Commodore Lewis goes out
to Huyti in the Horuet, as Ageut of the
United States.”
A Mr. Dox has been refused his seat in
the House of Assembly of the State of Ne w-
Yoik, for refusing to take the oath relative
to duelling.
The London Star «f Dec. 17, speaking
of the arrival of the United State ship
Franklin, says — “ Some may Lei a little
sore at, the political progress of one quondam
Colonists, in thus being able to send out
ships of such a class, bearing » impendent
Hag, and carrying an Ambassador to their
former Parent. But such a feeling is un
worthy of a great it ation. May the period
not he far distant, when we shall have to
Itail the arrival of an Ambassador from the
{Spanish Colonies of America, ineircum-'
stances of as honorable a state as those in
which we are now pleased to i ehold tile
Ambassador from eur own former Colonics
coming among us as the representative of a
distiuet and independent people.”
A petition is before the Legislature of
Pennsylvania, praying that militia train
ings may be abolished during peace, and a
speeial poll-tax of one dollar be paid, to
constitute a military fund.

A Cure for Cauiue Madness.
Mayorality of New-Orleans. .
Mr. Chabert, a physician from the Uni
versity of Montpelier lately arrived in this
city, has just made known to me a remedy !
tor the canine madness, which has been poin
ted nut as a specific by the ilaliau physi
cians,
That remedy was published in the Pied
montese Gazette of the Bth of Mav last,
from which it is literally copied by Mr. !
Chabert himsell, before his leaving France, j
The discovery of it is dae to professor Brug- !
natelli, and it would be the more advantage
ous to try by experiments the confidence
which it may be entitled to, as the use of (he j
remedy can occasion no dangerous conse- '
qiiences. I therefore deem it uiv duty to
make it known to my fellow citizens, by I
publishing the following as it has been trans
mitted to me :
“ Thanks to the celebrated professor
Brugnatelli, an efficacious remedy has, at
last, been discovered against cannine mad
ness, perhaps the most horrid of all disea
ses. That remedy consists in hydroclore
(acid muriatic ox: aqueux) used a? well in
side of the body as oil the exterior parts of
it. The wound produced by the bite of mad
animals mHst be washed with it. It appears
that that substance destroys the hydrophobic
poison, even when used several days ajter the
fatal bite. A number of well authenticated
cures operated by that simple means, in the
; great hospitals of Lombardy, do not permit
to doubt the powers of that precious remedy.”
AUG. MACARTY.
New-Orleans, Jan. 15. 1818.
Happy prevention of premature interment,
i “ 1 he late Sir Hugh Aeland, of Devonshire,
apparently died of a fever, and was laid out
as dead. The nurse with two of the foot
men, sat up with the corpse, and, the weather
being at the time extremely cold, Lady Ae
laud sent them a bottle of brandy to drink in
the night. One of the servants told the oth
er, that ** the old boy their master dearlv
loved a little brandy when he was alive, and
| he was resolved that he should take one
j glass now he was dead.” The fellow «c
--! eurdingly poured out a bumper, and forced
|it down his throat. A guggling immediate
ly ensued, and a violent inol'on of the neck
j and upper p irt of the breast. The oilier
I footman and the nurse wei;e so terrified, that
they ran dowu stairs, and the brandy genius,
hastening away with rather ton much speed,
tumbled down head foremost.—'The noise of
; the fan and his cries alarmed a young gen
| tleuMjn who slept in the house that night:
; who got up, and weDt immediately to the
i room where the supposed corpse lay, and to
j his great astonishment, saw Sir Hugh sit
! ting upright.—He called the servants Sir
•‘ugh was put into a warm bed, and the pliy-
J sician and apothecary sent for These geutle
! men in a few weeks perfectly restored their
patient to health, and lie lived several years
afterwards. The Baronet often told the
story, and when he really died, left the bran
dy footman a handsome annuity.”
The Vice-President of the United States,
left the eity of New-York for the Saat of
Government, on the 13ili iost.
