AUGUSTA HERALD.
~ ■ -r: ~:
FRIDAY, MAY 11, 1821.
Master G. F. Smith, made his ap
pearance in our Theatre, on Wednes- |
day evening last, in the character of
Richard 3d. to a crowded audience
—tve were not disappointed in the es
timation we had formed - qf his talents,
and perfectly coincide with the many
expressions of opinion we l.'.ve heard,
and cannot but believe him a Prodigy
irnthe annals of histrionic amusement;
we will resume this subject in our next, j
Bv the arvival at Savannah from Li- i
verpool in 42 days of the brig George, i
intelligence is received from Europe up !
to the 16th march. It appears, that I
notwithstanding the nominal over- j
whelming forces of Austria, the Nea
politans have gained a splendid victo
ry over them, base taken many prison
ers and a large amount of specie. What
will Russia and Prussia do at this junc
ture of affairs ? Will they assist their
Ally Austria, to rivet the chains of sla
very still stronger on the necks of men
who are only asserting their rights r
Their conduct will answer.
If rumours may be depended on,
when corroborated by the apparent po
licy of France and Spain, these pow- j
ers will ifiake a common cause with
Naples. Should they, it matters not
from what motives, whether those of ne
cessitous fear or otherwise, provided
their assistance will advance the cause
of liberty, and destroy the iron arm of j
monarchists, who base their suprema- !
cv and right to government <>u an heri- ;
duary succession. We presumed not l
long since to venture a belief, that the
subjugation of Naples was not an easv
matter, and now we are confirmed.
The war which has but commenced
may rage throughout the continent;
and we cannot but express an ardent
wish, that it may eventuate in the wide
spreading of liberal governments.
Such governments as are founded on
the natural rights of man—such as are
in themselves equitable and firm—such
as while they extend their genial influ
ence to the government, elevate the pri
vate worth and political integrity of
the governing, and such alone as eman
ate from a love of liberty and a hate to
tyranny.
Fortunately for our country its lo
cality (even were we disposed) pre
vents a participation in the scenes which
are now agitating a part of Europe,
Reclining as we are under a tested
system, we view with calmness those
royal factions either giving laws to the
slave or plan'ng his destruction, should
he dare oppose them. Under the be
nignant smile of a munificent provi
dence, we are happily existing; and
while a war of extermination may be
waged against men combatting for their
rights, and while such war may shake
to their centre the solidity of Empires
—distant, far distant from the place of j
tumult and in the enjoyments of the ;
excellence of our fair fabric, we sit se
cure “above the fogs of sense and pas
sions storm.” The monarchist may'
boast his splendor, the royalist his pow
er ; but it is the privileged dignity of
republicans to boast their liberty and
an equitable, government. And how
ever with European greatness our re- |
publican simplicity be compared, we j
should never wish “ tho flesh. pots.”
" Their touch is pollution,” their con
tents “ death.”
We understand th:*. on Tuesday,
the first, of May, about four o'clock, in
the afternoon, two white men, a Mr.
Bishop and Mr. Garrett, and three ne
groes, were instantly killed by light
ning, near Mr.Trotti's, in Barnwell dis
trict, 8. C, and five others near them
were at the same time severely injured.

The Feliciana Gazette of flv 13th
March states, tiiat the Mississippi is j
now very high, and it is feared will o- !
verflow its banks ; in which case New- !
Orleans will be in danger of an inun- i
datum. The water of the Red river i
was bracked up near ly 100 miles, and j
t every foot of ground below Alexandria j
jrtvas under water. If an inundation
should occur, the damage to the sugar
planters and others would be incalcu
lable.
A vast number of adventurers are
bound to Florida, to make, or fry to make
their fortunes. Pensacola, it is sup
posed, will become the most important
harbor on the coast, both for the sale
and shipment of American produce. It
is more convenient than New-Orleans
for a number of reasons; and is at the
same time one of the most healthy situa- J
tions on the gulph Mexico. —Com.

Finn.—On Tuesday evening about
halt past 5 o'clock, a fire broke out in a
stable in the rear of the G reen Tree Tav
ern, north Fourth street. A breeze,
which sprung up at the moment, wafted
some of the sparks northward, from
which, as we understand, several other
buildings caught, but owing to the ac
tivity of the firemen and other citizens, .
no essential damage was done, except
to the premises on which it originated—
this stable was entirely consumed, with
a quantity of hay, &c. The back build
ing attached to the Green Tree Tavern,
suffered very much, the roofbeing wholly
destroyed and the house throughout ma
terially injured. The furniture contain
ed in that part was removed, but iu a
very damaged state. The fire commen
ced in a back part of the stable, and had
progressed to such a degree before it
was discovered, as to preclude all hope
nfTescuing it. It is said, as usual, the
fire was not accidental, and it would
seem so from existing circumstances;
but the fact cannot be known at present.

A person who dealt in cheap bread in
London, has been convicted of having
in his possession a quantity of soft stone
pounded, for the purpose of adulterating
iiis bread. It is no uncommon thing
for persons in the neighborhood of Lou
don, to make a respectable subsistence
by grinding bones, gathered off the
streets, to powder, which they sell to
the millers, who again dispose of it to
the bakers for the same purpose. It is
considered a tiling of course, when the
latter makes a purchase from the for
mer, that a sack of bone flout is includ
ed in the bargain.
Early Peas. —Every attentive ob
server will remark among the plants of
almost every kind of crops some individ
ual stalks which are distinguishable
from the others by a greater degree of
health, or luxuriance, or curliness, of
some other peculiarity. A friend of
mine remarked a few years ago a par
ticular stem of peas among his earliest
crop, which-came into flower and ripen
ed long before the others. He marked
this stein ami saved the whole of its
produce for seed : These came as pinch
earlier as they had orginall v done. This
produce Was also saved for seed ; and
thus he obtained a particular kind .of
early peas, that came at least a week
before the best lie could buy out of the
shops, if sown at the same time with
them. The doctor relates facts similar
to this respecting wheat and beans.
The general idea he means to inculcate,
is ',’jtfious and extremely worthy of
attention. [Anderson’s Use.

Extraordinary Scene.
The greatest hoax tiiat ever has been
heard ot in this Metropolis, was practised in
Berners-streel, Oxfonl-stieet. The house
or Mrs. Tottenham, a lady of fdrtune, at
No. 54, was beset, by about a dozen trades
people at one time, wall their various com
modities, and from the confusion altogether,
such crowds had collected as to render toe
stieet impassible. Waggons laden with
coals from the Paddington wharfs, tiphoi.
sterers' goods in cart toads, organs, piano
fortes, linens, jewelry, and every other de
scription of furniture, sufficient to hare
stocked the whole street, / were lodged as
n ar as possible to the door of 54, with anx
ious trades people, and a laughing mob. A
bout this time, tile Cord Mayor ot J.on Jon,
arrived in his carriage, and two livery ser
vants, but his Lordship’s stay was short, and
he Was driven to Marlborougll-slreet Police-
Office. At the Office, bis Lordship inform
ed sitting Magistrate, that he bad received
a note, purporting to have come from Mrs
Tottenham, which stated thatsbe had been
summoned to appear before him, but tout
she was confined to her room by sickness,
and requested his Lordship’s favor to call
on her. Berner’s-street was at this tune in
the greatest confusion, by the multiplicity
of trades-pcople, who were reluming with
their goods, and spectators laughing at tliefn.
The officers belonging to Mariborough-st.
were immediately ordered oat to keep or
der, hut it was impossioie for a short time.
The first scene witnessed by the officers,
were six stout inen bearing an organ, sur
rounded by coal merchants, with permits ;
barbers, with wigs; mantiia makers, with
band boxes ; opticans, with tlfer various ar
ticles ot trade ; and such Was the pressure
of tradespeople, who had been duped, that
at 4 oc.ock, all was consternation and con
fusion. livery officer that could be muster
ed, wa3 enjisied to disperse the people, aiid
they were placed at th'e corner of Berner’s
strect, to prevent trades people from ad
vancing towards the house with goods.
lue street was not cleared if a late hour,
as servants of every denomination wanting
places, began to assemb.e at 5 o clock. It
turned out that letters had been written to
tlie different trades-pe'flp e, which stated re
commendations from persons of quality. A
reward has been offered for the apprehen
sion of the author cf tire criminal hoax.- -
Tins hoax exceeded by far tiiat iu Bedford

c meheurs, tooth drawers, miniature pain
ters, ar-ists of every description, auction
e i s’, undertakers, grocers, merchants, post
chaises, mourning coaches, poultry, raobus,
pi aeons, &C, In fact, the whole street was
l.ter.iKy filled with the motley group. The
follovrinrare a few of the notes, sent in the
name of -Mrs. Tottenham, for the purpose oi
collecting this most extraordinary group : I.

chaise and four may be at her house at two

towards Bulb. —54, Berr.er’s-street, Mon

“ Mrs. Tottenham begs the Hon. Mr.

speaking with him on business of impor
tance. —54, Berner’s street, Monday, Jkc.
