PROPOSALS UY
JOSEPH M. SANDERSON,
OF PHILADELPHIA.
For Publishing by Subscription, a Piography
of the Signers to the
Declaration of Independence.
BY
JOH.Y S. WH £ft S O.Y.
WHBN' we consider the personal quali
ties of the Statesmen, who were as
sociated in the first Cong css of the United
States, and whose names are affixed to the
Declaration of independence, the perilous
occasion which demanded the exercise of
their wisdom and deliberations, and the in
fluence of their councils on the interests of
mankind, we must acknowledge that very
< ,rarely a more imposing and magnificent
spectacle has been exhibited to the world ;
and we shad seek in vain, in the annals of
nations, for an event more worthy of com
memoration, or of being cherished forever
in the hearts of a grateful and generous
people. The love of Independence is in
terwoven with the frame and constitution of
the human mind. It is almost the first sen
timent tnat the inCmt’s features in
the craale ; and amongst all the actions and
enterprises of man, none has awakened in
to activity a greater exertion of the virtuous
energies ut his nature, none has excited a
greiu: warmth of veneration, and lias more
imperious claims upon out 1 gratitude, than
re, lance to tyrai ay and political oppres
sion.
in those Rcpuohcan States which have
been tiie admit of the world, the first
tribute of genius was jiaid to tli*e patriot or
bcio, who promoted tile cause of* liberty
a d maintained the independence and dig
nity' of man. Ihe animated canvas, and the
breathing marble snatched his features from
thegfisp of death, and the historian in- !
sen,jed iiis name and achievements, in the I
inip available record# of fame. It would in
deed be no favorable pressage of the per- j
petuity of our republican institutions, to j
discovtt an insensibility to the obligations [
we owe the memory of the ii.ustricus pat j
rons of American freedom. They advaoc- j
etl vis, by their magnanimity, from the inglo- j
nous state ol coiOnini subjection, and from
the arbitrary doininiofi ot a foreign power,
to the distinguished elevation of a sover
eign and independent people ; they assert
ed and maintained the imprescriptible rights
ot humanity, by tile “mutual pledge of
their hv, s, tiieir fortunes, and their sacred
honor and as long as virtue holds her em
pire m the hearts of their successors, the
example of these generous benefactors will |
not be lost to the world ; their names will !
not pass away, nor be forgotten ; or their !
glorious deeds be confounded in the cum- i
inon art.; oa-mt! trans-c ion .of life. Ingr.i- ;
fitude, is a vice, that in nation*, as well as j
individ , ils, indicaies the last degree of de- j
go.K'racy and corruption- It is a vice that 1
implies absence of every virtue ;it was 1
in (lie age ot Caiigula, that the name of the !
Sc:,i;oa was proscribed, and the statue of I
Drutus. brought death on its possessor.
“ I’be glory of our ancestors is the light I
of posiev.ty,” and the homage of tiie living j
can tat be mTercd to the merits of the illus
trioo; dead, with an ineffectual or sterile
aum.r i. m. Ureal and splendid actions will
seldom be achieved by men who have hum
tic oi orti. . ,ry objects in prospect. It is by
coutemplating the lives and characters of
thosi ii arc marked out from the multi
tude by iticir eminent qualities, that we he
come emulous of their virtues and their re
flown. Uis by reading the history of their
generous and noble actions, that sympathe
tic emotions are excited in the heart; and
by a reiteration of such feelings, that gran
deur of sentiment, dignity and elevation of
character, and liabiis of virtue, are generat
ed and confirmed. Lycurgus clait in ar
’mo'ur the statues of the Gods, that even in
their devotions the citizens of Sparta might
have tiie image ol war before their eyes ;
observing well that the disposition of the
mind, like a limb of the body, was invigorat
ed by exercise and activity. “He inter
wove,” says Plutarch, “ the praise of virtue
and the contempt of vice in all their pur
suits and recreations, and by these arts they
were possessed with athirst of honor, an
enthusiasm bordering on insanity, and had
not a wish for their country.” The trophies
of Sliltiades interrupted the sleep of l he
mistoules, and Theseus in listening to the
expmiis of Hercules, was fired with liis spir
it and became the successful rival of his
fame, l'lie uncultivatix! savage catches the
flame of emulation from the deeds of his
ancestors, and hangs his hut with the em
blems of his father’s valor.
