AUGUSTA HERALD. Vol. XXITI No. 4 j. National Work. I PROPOSALS BY JOSEPH M. SANDERSON, OF PHILADELPHIA. Pur Publishing by Subscription, a Biography of the Signers to the Declaration of Independence. BT JOI/.V SJjVDERSOJV. WHEN we consider the personal quali ties of the Statesmen, who were as sociated in the first Congress of the Hinted States, and whose names are affixed to the declaration ol Independence, the perilous occasion which demanded the exercise of their wisdom and deliberations, and the in fluence of their councils on the interests of mankind, we must acknowledge that very si's rely a more imposing and magnificent spectacle has been exuibited to the world ; and we shall seek in vain, in the annals of nations, tor an event more wormy of com memoration, or of being cherished forever in the heaits of a grateful and generous people The love of Independence is in terwoven* with the frame and constitution the human mind. It is a.most the first sen luouijaqt animates the infant’s features in tile crauie ; and amongst all the actions and enterprises of man, none has awakened irf to activity a greater exertion of the virtuous energies of his nature, none has excited a greaLer warmth of veneration, and has more imperious claims upon our gratitude, than to tyranny and political oppres sion. In tiiose Republican States which have been the admiration of the world, the first tribute ot genius was paid to the patriot or hero, who promoted tlie cause ot liberty aud maintained the independence and dig nity of man. The animated canvas, and me breathing marble snatched his features from the grasp ol death, and the historian in scribed ms name and achievements in the imperishable records of tame. 1c would in deed be no favorable pressage of the per petuity ol our republican institutions, to | discover an insensibility to the obligations we owe tlfe memory of the illustrious pat rons of American freedom. They advanc ed us, by tiieir maguan.mity, from the ingio- ' vious state of coioma! subjection, and from j the arbitrary dominion of a foreign power, j to the distinguished elevation of a sever ] eign and independent people ; they asset - - | ed and maintained the imprescriptible right- ; of humanity, by the “ mutual pledge of their hv s, their fortunes, and their sacred i honor and as long as virtue holds herein- j pirwiu the hearts of their successors, the example ol tnese generous benefactors will not be lost to the world ; their names will hot pass away, nor be forgotten ; or their glorious deeds be c mtounded in tbc com mon and carnal transactions of life. Ingra titude, is a vice, tiiat in nations, as well as individuals, indicates the last degree of de generacy and corruption- It is a vice that implies the absence of every virtue ; it was in the age of (Jaiigula, that the name of the Scipios was proscribed, and the statue of Brutus, brought death on its possessor. “ The giory of oar ancestors is tile light of posterity,” and the homage of tiie living cannot be offered to the merits of the illus trious dead, with an ineffectual or sterile admiration. Great and splendid actions will seldom be achieved by men who have hum bfe or ordinary tijects in prospect. It is by contemplating the lives and characters of those who are marked out from the multi tude by their eminent qualities, that we be come emulous ot iheir virtues and theii re nown. It is by reading the history of their generous and noble actions, that sympathe tic emotions are excited in the heart; and by a reiteration of such feelings, that gran deur of sentiment, dignity anil eiavation of character, and habits of virtue, are genernt \ * ed and confirmed. Lycurgus clad in ar mour the statues of the Gods, that even in their devotions the citizens of Sparta might have the image of war before their eyes ; observing well that the disposition of the mind, like a limb of the body, was invigorat ed by exercise and activity. “He inter wove,” says Plutarch, “ the praise of virtue and the contempt of vice in all their pur suits and recreations, and by these arts they were possessed with a thirst of honor, an enthusiasm bordering on insanity, and had not a wish for their country.” flic trophies of Miltiades interrupted the sleep of t'he mistocles, and Theseus in listening to the exploits of Hercules, was fired with liisspir it and became the successful rival of his fame. The uncultivated savage catches the flame of emulation from the deeds of his ancestors, and Indies his hut with the em v blems of his father’s valor. More need not to be said to enforce the utility of t ie publication vve have underta ken, and which we now submit to the pa ronage f our fellow-citizens- CONDITIONS. WANTED TO HIRE, AS a Nurse, a NEGRO GIRL about tB or 12 years of age —For Particular*, apply at this office. a 3 PROSPECTUS OK Ss IPDSSa IN SIX BOOKS , , ENTITLED better to 15c: By Joseph Kvk. To be Published in the City of Augusta The following extract from the “ Georgia Advertiser,” will elucidate the principal and drift o the Poem : “ The Poen: is in SIX BOOKS, of from three to five hundred lines each. The author's obj’ect seems to be to combat that erroneous sentiment which the melancholy speculations of minds of gloomy sensibility have inculea ted, that the miseries of human life so far overbalance its enjoyments, that existence itself is not a blessing, or its continuance to be desired. Mr. Eve, in his Poem, attempts to show, aud we believe pretty successlullv, that tnere are sufficient grounds of comfort in all the diversified stations of life, sufficient sources of consolation in the midst of con visicts and difficulties, to demonstrate the ruth of the title lie has chosen for hii Po em, that it is “ Better to Be.” He endea vors to show, that Providence, in continu ing individuals in existence, forms a more accurate estimate of human happiness than those churlish beings do, who, in the midst of countless blessings, can find nothing worth living for. Mr. Eve takes a survey of hu man life in all its stages—of science in all its branches—of business in all its activity—of creation in all its sublimity and beauty, and under various views, and many animated descriptions, he endeavors clearly to show, that the life of man, with all its vicissitudes, has a balance of happiness greatly in its fa vor. The work, we are informed, will after a short time be put to press.” TERMS. The above Poem will be printed or. very fine paper, and in an elegance of style not j inferior to the handsomest northern publica tions. It will be comprised in one volume, con taining about 200 duodecimo pages.
