AUGUSTA HERALD. |
TUESD AY, AUGUST 14, 1821.
WE publish a piece in our paper to
day from the New-York Advertiser,
signed, “ Plvix Truth,” on the sub
ject of die affairs of the Bank of the
U. States, which will no doubt be inter
esting to many of our readers. We do
not profess to have any knowledge of
the intricacies of banking, but as so
great a portion of property is invested
therein, we know not that we err in giv- j
ing a place in our columns, to any in- J
formation, which will prove beneficial
to our fellow-citizens. And while we
thus give publicity, we cannot assume !
any responsibility for the correctness !
or incorrectness of such statements; ;
but as they seem to be written in a dis- j
passionate manner, they deserve at all
events a patient reading.
ROBBERY.
THE complaint of hard times is one
of a nature so common, that we do not
now consider it on the catalogue of the
news of tire day—aud although we
may discover men, without any visible
means for a competent sustenance, still
supporting themselves in quite an accom
modating manner; yet, there are others
who have to resort to measures, if not
novel in their kind, are at least a warn
ing to those, who feel the necessity of
j securing all they have from the mid
night revels of such as wink at the ter
rors ot a penal code, in order to amass
a share of the good things of the times.
A signal instance of this pertinacity
was evidenced on Tuesday night iast,
in an attempt to rob the store of Mr.
Benjamin Hall in this city, by two white
men and 2 negroes. They were however
foiled in their hopes, and as to their
fears, we cannot say, that they are
Mot realized, as wc understand they
were detected in the fact—so that
*' leaving not a loop on which to hang a
doubt,” although we lean upon the fun
damental principle of the law, that an
individual should be presumed inno
cent, until he is proven guilty ; yet we
do not aver, that they will not receive
a due reward for their ingenuity aud
perseverance.
The negroes were tried yesterday
be ore the proper authority, and both be- j
ing convicted were sentenced by the
court to be whipped. One (Tom) the

FROM NEW ORLEANS.
By the schooner Eagle, Capt. Kino,
who arrived at this port on Sunday last,
from Nevv-Orleans, we have been fa
vored with the papers of that city to
the 17th ult. inclusive, from which we
have made a few extracts for this morn
ing’s Courier. —The exports from New-
Orleans, from the Ist October 1820, to
the 7th July 1821, amount to 126,729
bales cotton, and 23,543 hogsheads to
bacco.— The number of vessels in port
on the 17th July, was 8 ships, 12 brigs,
5 schooners, and 2 sloops.
A violent gale, or tornado, was ex
perienced at New Orleans on the 13th
ult. which did considerable damage.
Its extent was about 800 or 900 yards
in length, and about 200 in breadth.
A great number of buildings were
blown dowii and damaged, and two
persons were killed.—A part of the
distillery of Messrs. Four and Cle
ment, the walls of which were of brick,
14 inches thick, was blown down, which
exposed to the rain about three hun
dred hogsheads of Molasses, most of
which was spoiled.—A piece of pine
scantling was blown from a house, and
one end of it pierced several inclies in
to a 13 inch biick wall, where it re
mained the next. (lav. The whole da
mage done bv the gale is estimated at
about sixty thousand dollars.—The
gale was also very severely felt at the 1
English Turn, (where considerable da- !
mage was done to the crops of corn,) j
aud also in Mobile Bay.

Jl Curious Incident. —About ten

C aliens of Soinerstown, Westchester,
littered seven young ones, and died. '
The day before a cat had kittened in
the same house ; Mr. (J. byway of ex
periment, took away puss’s progeny one :

siead ; anil it is a fact, that the cat is i
at this time kindly nursing the strang

The United States ship Columbus, Com.

from Gibraltar. They sailed in Company on
the bth June ; and left the United Slates

on the 4tb, 21 days passage. Tne U. Stales

tod May for Tunis.
Ihe Columbus we learn has on board the
Statueof Washington, by Canova, for the
Mate of North-Carolina. We have not heard
tnat any measures have been taken bv the
citizens of this town to obtain a sight of this
interesting piece of Sculpture.
On coming up the harbor the Columbus
afforded a most handsome spectacle. With
a favorable, though light wind, having a full
spread ot canvas, she appeared to great ad
vantage. Her sails were furled in a manner
, that added much credit to the skill of iter
I officers and the discipline of her seamen
; On coming to anchor, the Crew gave three
j cheers, which were cordially responded to
by the numerous spectators who lined the
! Wharves and vessels,

Extract of a letter, dated
Lihkiuck, June 11,1821.
“ Yesterday evening, ai the early hour of
eight o’clock, a horrid and barbarous occur
rence took place within a mile ol tins city,
which for atrocity exceeds any that lias late
ly been recorded. In the early part of the
Spring, a daring attack was made by an arm
ed mob on a bouse or. the lands of Cmmi
gar, near this city, where Mr. Torrence re
sided. He had previously received a threa
tening notice to quit tne lands, winch lie dis
regarded.. After a long and valiant resist
ance, aided only by h s wife, who dis. layed
a courage beyond her sex, he succeeded in
completely repulsing the assailants waii die
loss of one of their gang, who was curried
off mortally wounded. On the evening a
bove mentioned, ibis brave, but unfortunate
couple were met on the road between J.one
rick and Dunnigur, by a body of men dress
! ed in women’s clothes ( they were ir.mid- i
lately surrounded, and in an instant Mr. Tor
rence was barbarously murdered.

After having informed his medical attend
ants that necessity had induced linn to lake
advantage of his presumed .extraordinary
j digestive power, and stated that he iiad re
j ceived as a recompense, twenty five cents for
each knite lie had swallowed, in the exhibi
tion of ins profession : to test the truth oi
i tne story he had communicated, with so
I much serenity and apparent candour, a porket
pen Knife was offered him with tile promise
j ot had a dollar it he would swallow it; he
lies.lated at first ; from an apprehension of
the d.sappr i lationofthe physician, who had
not yet left the apartment."but upon being
4 •- ri li.i -j. zfL./ -d in tut ‘
pect, he cast his eyes upon the khiff, ami
with a sneer said, “why, I could swallow that
little thing with as much ease as a drink of
water.’' The point of compliance being
urged, he rose from his recumbent posture,
and while sitting in bed w ith his hands by his
side, at his request the knife was put into
his mouth, which he at once swallowed with
apparent ea*-, to the complete conviction,
but utter astonishment, of many respectable
witnesses.
This proof of what he might have done,
led to a further inquiry into his case, and h.s
life.
He calls himself Dennis Shepherd, and
says he was born near Montreal, where ins
parents, now live; that he is a soldier, and
lought in the last war ; that lie was a drum
mer on Governor’s Island, near New York,
at Which place lie swallowed about two years
ago nineteen knives mu\ f/rly-one cents in one
day ; for the knives he Was paid five dollars ;
and the money he swallowed was to remu
nerate him for his trouble, or, as he says, it
would pay as it went. He further declares,
that while serving under Co n. Dexter,* on'
L ike Krie, on one occasion, when bis pecu
liar capacity was questioned, he swa’ owed,
for ten dollars, the commander’s gold watc i
and chain, which passed off in tei> days per
warn natwa urn, very little injured, except
in color, which had changed to black. Some
time after he swallowed thirty four musket
balls, for a quart of ruin, of which lie says lie
wes soon relieved in consequence of their
great weight inclining them rapidly down
wards.
These accounts I offer as remjukable evi
dence of this man’s swallowing capacities.
The story was told with all the frankness of
con us veracity; and he maintained the
same pari'.'liars, though various and fre
quently repeated interrogatories. School
bov-days, when stealing marbles from his
fellows, this practice suggested itself to pre
vent detection.
Since his admission into the Alms House,
two of the knives lie swallowed at Norfolk,
have passed from him, by proper treatment,
adapted to his v,-rv pec.t iar case. The
knives he discharged, exhibited such altera
tion, as afford indisputable evidence of the
chemical action they bad u .dergooe,

corroborate some of Ins details; at least I
bone that vvliat i state will be thought sutii

disquisitions, and a further investigation of
the unknown powers of the gastric secretion.
[it is to be hoped that no influence will
be us.ul to induce this wretch to swallow
any more knives to gratify curiosity.
