The torrent of rain during the whole af
ternoon was intense and tmremiUed : and
it is computed, that the average b idy of wa
ter that descended could not be fess than
3 in. 92-100.—The storm was accomoanied
by no thunder or lightning.
We feel anxious to hear from the upper
parts of the country; and wiil thunk our
correspondents for any communication rela
tive to the course and effects of this almost
unprecedented storm.
CC? - Since the above we learn, that a boat
with seven or eight colored people return
ing from a camp meeting, held near Bristol,
was upset off Callmvhin street, by which
five of the passengers were drowned.

Norfolk, September 4.
Yesterday, between the hours of 10 A.
M. and 1 P. M. our town was visited by a
hurricane, accompanied with torrents’of
rain, commencing from N. E. and terminat
ing at N. N. W. which for violence and ex
tent of damage, we are informed hy many
of our oldest residents, has no parallel in
their recollections. So general and wide
spread is the devastation, that it would be
impossible, from the short tune that has
elapsed since its fury was staid, to give from
hearsay, any thing like a detail of its awful
consequences.
We will, however, attempt to throw' to.
gether such particulars as have come under
our observation, premising that very few
house-keepers have escaped injury, "either
in their enclosures or houses, and nearly all
of the most highly improved lots in the Bo
rough have been despoiled of their attrac
. tions, by the prostration of their walls or
js fences, the uprooting of tm es, whose slur- :
dy trunks and luxuriant fjliige have hereto- j
fore defied the utmost fury of the tempest,
or the partial destruction of gardens, many
of which had been cultivated with uncum- I
tnon care, and were about to reward their i
tinders with abundant supplies.
Among the edifices which have sustained '
the greatest damage, we regret to state, is
the Episcopal Church, part of the front of
which, ab ive the cornice, being blown in,
the organ was entirely demolished, and much
other damage done to the interior ; the
Court House was partly unroofed and one
of tile chimnies blown down; two of the
chimnies of (he Farmers’ Bank were blown
_ down; and the back windows of the Bank
" of Virginia much shattered. I’he chimnies
of the following dwellings were blown
down, and other damages sustained—those
of Francis S. Taylor, and Mr. Arthur Tay
lor, jun’r, on Boush-street; of Mr, q vv.
Camp, and Mr. I hornas ffekson, on Free*
, mason street ; Mrs. Kelly’s house, Mr. J.
Woodward’s house, occupied by Jos. John,
ion, ksq. Collector, and Mi's, Crommeliune’s
house next to the court house occupied by
Capt. Anderson, of the Marine Corps ; of
Mrs. Capron ; t vtr,. Hartshorn, (the pro
perty of Mr. Andrew Martin,) on Main st.
Mr. house, which last fell on the
root ot Mr, Bonsai’s Bo ok-Store, stove it
in and dip damage to a considerable amount
amongs* his hooks and stationary ; the chim
nies ot th • house on Smitn’s Point owned
by Dr. Barrand a id now occupied by Com.
Arthur Sinclair, were blown down, and the
house in other respects much injured i those
of Ur, Hodges’ house, opposite to it, shared
the same (ate. A small fiane house on
Southgate and Dicksons’ wharf, occupied
by Mr. 1). 3. Oamcron, as a shop ; another
on ticker’s wiiarf, occupied by >l.-. Dash
mi, tor the same purpose, were blown down,
and washed awnv by the tide ; also pan of
the shop of Mr. Isaac Talbot, on Taylor’s
wbar, a larg quantity of shingles and oth
er lumber were blown from the lumber
yard O: Mr, J. Tunis and swept away by
the tide ; ami we have heard of many oth
er houses, in different parts of the town and
fields, wnich we are unable to designate by
o'* ers or occupants.—The house of Messrs.
Kes lons, next above our "dice, occupied
by ilr. Wm. Hog ers, jr. Mr. Sam’l. Smith,
and Sir. Nalli’l. Berry, was stripped of its
slating, the partition in one of the lower a
pariments thrown down, and several of the
windows blown in ; die upper part of the
from of the house next to Doct. Cowdery’s
shop, the property of col. S. Wright, wa-.
also blown in ; as was part of the gable end
ts die new brick house, on Bank-sireet,
J\isl finished, the property of Mr. K. Far
tnar. The new stone - bridge, on Grarnby
street, was much injured by the drifting of
heavy timber against it, and the bridge oil
Catharine street was swept away by the tor
rent.
We regret to state that a new house, erec
ting on Washington Point, by Waite, of the
Steam-Boat Ha npton, was blown down and
dgs: royed.
Tlre'ground stories of the ware-houses on
the wharves and *s nigh u p as Wide W ater
streyt, were entirely overfl iwed, and we
learn dial the, damage sustained in Sugar,
Fi.mr ami salt, is very great, the amount of
which, as of iher damage inflicted by tins
awtu l visitation it is impussible, at this time,
to lor i. even a conjee.m e.
The DitAWumnen across Elizabeth River,
next to N irioiic, was entirely swept away, in
the early part of tile hurricane, and will re
quire consideiabie time and expence to re
place it.
The damage sustained among the Ship
ping is immense, and fids us with klie must
painful feelings to detail even so much of it
as lias come to our knowledge, wnich must
fal. tar short of the whole amount.
The ling Georg.ana, Capt. Chamberlain,
f parted her fasts at Reilly's Wharf, anddrifi
ing with great v o.eiice against the Steam

tersburg, which before su.-tained the pres
sure of several other small vessel, adrif, a
mong winch the sloop Hira n, Capt. Hamil
ton, tney all gave way and were carried be
tween 2 and 3 miles up the Eastern Branch.
The Steam Boats Virginia and Potomac re
turned in the evening to the end of New
ton’s Wharf—the former having had both
her boats stove and sustained other damage
to the amount ot aliout §3OO, the latter hav
ing one boat destroyed, and being injured
considerably in her wheels guards, &c. The
Georgians is agrou.d, and lias capsized, but
it is believed will be gotten off again, at
some expense ; the steam-buais Iftch uond,
and Petersburg, are injured to a large a
mount, are iugn and dry, but it is th might
will soon be got off again, with some exer
tion. Ashore above the bridge, sloop Hi

of whom 5 were ladies, anchoret! at th

she drove from her anchors and ran ashore
at Fort Nelson. She- was compelled to cut
awat her foremast, and lost her anchor and
cable.—Capt. W. in belialfofhis passengers,
returns his thanks to the Officers at the
Tort, for the polite and prompt assistance
afforded them. At the same place is the
schr. Union, from Santa Cruz, with Rum and
Sugar, and a sloop, loaded with Shingles,
bound up—all ashore.
Our sister town Portsmouth, we hear, has
participated largely in the destructive effect*
ot this unwelcome visitant.—We are not in
possession of any of the particulars but shah
endeavor to give them in the next
The United States’ frigates Congress and
Guernere, parted from their moorings and
we lt ashore a little above the Navy-Vard
on the opposite side of the river. ’
We have understood that several lives
have been lost on this occasion, though none
is mentioned by name, but a Negr > Woman
called P/iebe, the property of Mrs. King
who m coming from on board a vessel at the
whar., was struck by a piece of plank that
fell from the top ot a warehouse, and died
immediately.

In addition to theula.nagc sustained bv the
Hurricane of Monday, we learn that the loss
oj Mr. R, Soutter was very considerable, at
his lumber yard, in rear of the jail; a large
j quantity of Staves, Shingles, Boards, and
; so ,ie Tar > were entirely swept away, and j
some Salt stowed in his warehouse, much j
i damaged. The residence of Com. Sinclair, '
j Smith’s Point, is much more seriously in- '
! .lured than represented in yester lay’s notice,
J tor in addition to the chimnies being blown
diwn, much of the gable end fell in, and it is
rendered perfectly untenantable, 'flip brick j
gable ends of a sina I tenement adjoining the I
family residence of William Maxwell, Esq. '
and occupied by him as a study, were blown
in. Ihe root ot the house adjoi bug Mr.
George W. Camp’s owned by Mrs. Willough- |
by, was broken ill by the falling of the chim
nies ot Mr. C’s. house.
In the hurry with which our notice of
yesterday was inkdc, an inaccuracv escaped,
j as regarded the United States Frigates at
the Navy "Yard, Ihe Guernere only par.ed
j her bow fast, and in swinging round barely
1 touched, but did not go ashore. The Oou
! gress parted only of her lasts ; but the cor-
I vette John Mams went ashore, near Caucr
j Grove and is on her beam ends.
The Brig Minerva, Grow., (of Bath Me.)
| drove over the wrecks by the Toll House
j of the Drawbridge, and in all probability will
not be gotten off again, The Schooner
Frances Miner, Henderson, broke Irom iicr
moorings, drifted tibout two miles up the !
Eastern Branch, and W ent ashore.—Sue will
probably get off' again.—The Br.g Dolphin
disappeared from under Seaweli’s Poim,
I and strong apprehensions are felt tin her
| safety.
: The ship Lothair parted from her fast* at
j. Dickson’s Wuart, at Gosport, passed die
j Drawbridge, and is ashore a little above it,
| much injured. Many chimnies and enclo
sures Were blown down tu Ports uoutli and
Gosport,' out the principal sufferer*, we
hear, are William Wilson, E-q. Airs. Gray,
Capt, Benson, ami Capt.. Leslie.
A lady in Portsmouth by the name of Shea
Was killed while holding tier cnild in Her
arms, but the child fortunately sustained no
injury.
\Y e learn by the Eastern Shore packet
Margaret, Capt. Scott, which arrived from
Hampton yesterday morning, where she ve
ry fortunately put in, about an hour before j
the hurricane Commenced, that a dozen ves- i
sels, several of them with their heads in the
woods, are a Imre between Hampton and
this place, all small craft except two, one of
which in the mouth of Tanner’s Creek ;
also tnat a Schooner which had lust both ca
bles and anchors was towed in under Old
Point. She had sustained little damage.
Every precaution is called for on the part
of our citizens to guard against the 111 ef
fects of the vegetable matter deposited hy
the receding of tiie water, the falling of
trees, &c. It should be removed imme
diately, and lime profusely scattered where
it cannot be throughly cleansed. It is a.so
recommended, from sources entitled to the
attention of the citizens that they do not
permit any water to remain in the cellars of
their houses. As it is a fruitful source ot
disease, it would be highly criminal to dis
regard the admonition. •
We were informed at a very iate hour last
night, that the des ruction in the country,
in ihe direction of Moor’s and London
Bridges, even to the sea coast, is immense,
including Houses, Mills, Bridges, Fences,
Stock, Corn, &c. &c. One of Moor’s
Bridges is destroyed ; it is also said that
London Bridge is swept away by the tor
rent, on one of Mr. Brunet's plantations,
called Greenfield, the houses of every de
scription are demolished; the Wind Mills
of Messrs. John Cornick and Lemuel Cur
nick are entirely destroyed. The roads are
almost impassible, even on horseback. The
Crops are laid low, and the country exhibits
one scene of wide spread desolation and

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 18,1821.
WE refer our readers to our columns
of this dajCs paper, for a recital of the
dreadful and melancholy disasters
which happened during the late tempest
at the City of New-York, and other
cities to the northward, particularly at
Norfolk. The scene of desolation to
the shipping on our coasts we fear will
be horrible, as yet however, from that
quarter we have had no information.
The New Theatre waa opened on
Saturday evening (says the New-York
Daily Advertiser,) to an artdience of up
wards'of two thousand persons. The
internal arrangements were very highly
spoken of, and much improved from
that of the Old Theatre. The new Ad
dress was well received, and the new
scenery was generally admired.' The
old dramatic corps were welcomed with
great plaudits, particularly the old
favorites Mr. and Mrs. Barnes, Miss
Johnson, and Mr. Simpson.

Poor captain Symmes, has evinced
the simplicity of his heart, by asking
for a loan of money to prosecute his
researches to the centre of the earth.
Had he been acquainted with man
kind, he would have known that it is
often very difficult for a person to bor
row cash wiio remains on the surface of
the globe, and has real estate to back
his solicitations. What chance, there
fore, can he have of getting a loan, who
confesses himself pennyless, wants to
disappear from the suilitce, and drive
! to toe bowels of the earth !

ATTEMPT AT FRAUD.
At an auction sale yesterday, at Ven
dut Range, eight barrels i.l sugar were 1
ottered as of prime quality, winch, upon j
examination, proved to be adulterated ; j
i being, as was judged, about one-third 1
! hi weight of fine white sand. Upon ;
discovery of the cheat, the auctioneer j
himself being absent from the city, his
agent immediately stopped the sale, and
deposited the sugar in store, where it
will be retained until the return of the !
proprietor. VVehaye Hot ascertained j
correctly to whom the sugar belonged, i
although rumor has been busy on the |
subject; but we trust that he will be
| ete long exposed to the ignominy to
j which so detestable an action justly en
titles him. We do not understand that
| any blaiue is attached to the persons
who had the management of the sale.

MORE PIRATES.
The brig Columbus, Marbury, arrived
at Alexandria from St. Jago de Cuba,
was boarded twice on the passage by
pirates. The first time, on the 6th of I
August, 4 leagues to the north of Cum
berland Harbor, by a sloop with a crew
ol 50 or 60 men, principally negroes,
and no doubt the same vessels of which
we have lately had several accounts.
They only took a barrel of bread, hav
ing been alarmed by the appearance o)
a large ship under their lee. And a
gain, on the 19th, in lat. 27, 52, lon. 7-1.
21, tell in with two slims, one the Or
leans, of Philadelphia, for Campeachy
and the other a pirate, who ordered the
captain alongside With his papers, and
after having examined them, permitted
him to proceed. Three boats were
continually passing between the Or
leans and the pirate ; and capt. M. un
derstood that they were taking out tin
Spanish property that was on board
Some of the pirates had on hats will

Un the morning of the 10th instant,
a paity of citizens of this courtty, about
sixty in number, assembled at two dif
ferent points and surrounded a space
ol fifteen miles in circumference, in
which it was expected this monster was;
the party closed to the centre, but made
no other discovery, than several evacu
ated camps, and the track of Jack,
which, for want of dogs could not be
traced. Before the party separated, it
was unanimously agreed that seventeen
subscriptions should be distributed in
this and in Richmond county, for rais
ing a sum ol money to otter for the ap
prehension of Jack, which it is believed
will be sufficiently large to make it an
object lor persons skilled in the art of
taking outlyers.—-On the 22d instant,
the subscriptions are to be handed to a
committee of three persons, appointed
at the same time to take charge of the
receipts; when the amount subscribed
will be published—When these pro
ceedings come to the knowledge of
Jack, (and from his extensive connex
ion with the negroes, it cannot be ex
pected they can Tong be concealed from
Idm,) lie may fly to some other part of
the country to elude detection. The
writer of this, therefore feels it his du
ty to give some description of the fa
mous Bandit, iu order that the ferocity
of his disposition may be the better a
voided, and that there may be a chance
for his detection.
Jack is a country bom, about six
feet high, stout form, very black, and is
gifted with uncommon bodily power ;
when he walks he steps far, and bends
a little; his countenance is not bad,
and he is very artful. It is probable, .
that Jack will have a pass written in a
hand resembling that of a schoolboy.

P. S. Since writing the above, have
been informed, that Jack was seen in
| company with a wagon,drove bv a black
man, near Gen. Walkers in Richmond
county, going to Augusta, it is probable
therefore in consequence of the recent
search for him, that he may endeavor to
lurk about that place. A. C. B. C.
