Young blushing merit and neglected worth t

And lash the fool who lisps it from the Mage,
Here shall Wield genius wing his eagle High',

He soar*, the wonder and the pride of men.
Cold censure here to decent mirth shall bow,
A id bn otry unbend his monkish blow ;
Here toil shall pause, his ponderous sledge

And beauty bless each strain with melting

Grief, n o in fiction 1 .it, slu II cease to wc*p.
And all the world's rude cures be laid in

Each p I shed scene stall tas'c and truth ap

And the htage triumph in the people’s love.
WHIMSOF AGE.
Some years ilgo six old men and six
old women w ere sukperned out of the
town of Stockport to appear on a trial
in the court of YV estininater. The eld
est til the men was one hundred and
five, and the youngest, sixty seven; the
eldest of the women was one hundred
and three, and the youngest, sixty five.
Two coaches were provided, to take
those twelve persons to London ; hut
the old lady aged one hundred and
three, rvlused to ride in the same coach
with the old gentleman of one hundred
and live, saying,” 1 do not think it pru
dent to ride with one of his sex; 1 have
supported a good character so far, and
I am determined to support it as long
as l live in this world ?” They all ar
rived safe at a gentleman’s house upon
Newington Green, near London. The
gentleman wished our old men to be
shaved twice a week, but they refused,
•aying, “the London barbers were a
set ot knaves for charging them two
(>once a piece, for in Stockport they
tad never paid more than one halfpen
ny a head ?
It happened that one of the old men,
as he was walking in Hishopsgate street,
read on a board—“shaving for one
penny!” he returned and informed his
ti tends ot tin- lucky discovery, and they
all set out next morning to get shaved.
The old man who found out the penny
barber was allowed the honor of sitting
first; when the barber had shorn one
side of his face, he pulled the cloth
awav; the old mail shouted, “holloa,
measter, you forgotton to shave this
side.” I lie barber replied, that “if he
shaved the other side, he must have
another penny!” The old matt got up
in a rage, called the barber a “ cheating ,
scoundrel, and declared he would re
turn to Stockport halt shaved as he was,
before he would give him another pen- |
«v.” He took his handkerchief and ,
wiped the lather off his face, put on Ids j
hat, bade adieu to the barber's shop, j
Wild with bis venerable companions,
knights,! f the heard, adjourned to ihe
sign of the “Fox and Anchor,*’ Charter .
House Lane, where they stopped till
they all got intoxicated : and it was
the third day after, before die gentle
man, on whose suit they attended,
could prevail on them to get shaved by
a two-penny bather. [London paper■

PROSPECTUS
OF
IN
SIX BOOKS ,
ENTITLED
23ettcr to 23e:
By Joseph Eve.
To be Published in the City of Augusta
Hie following extract from the “ Georgia
Aut ehtiser,” will elucidate the principa
and di ilt o the Poem :
“ The Poem is in SIX BOOKS, of from three
to five hundred lines each. The author's
object seems to be to combat that erroneous
sentiment which the melancholy speculations
of n inds ot gloomy sensibility have inculca
ted, that the mi*ries of human life so far
overbalance its enjoyments, that existence
itself is not a blessing, or its continuance to
be desired. Mr. Eve, in his Poem, attempts
to show, and we believe pretty successfully,
that tnere are sufficient grounds of comfort
in all the diversified stations of life, sufficient
sources of consolation in the midst of con
victs and difficulties, to demonstrate the
truth ot the title he has chosen for his Po
em, that it is “ Better to Be.” He endea
vors to show, that Providence, in continu
ing individuals in existence, forms a more
accurate estimate of human happiness than
j those churlish beings do, who, in the midst
of countless blessings, can find nothing worth
living for. Mr. Eve tak#s a survey of hu
man life in all its stages—of science in all i s
.branches—of business in ail its activity
creation in all its sublimity and beauty am!
under various views, and many animated
descriptions, he endeavors clearly to show,
I | nat tU u e , , ' te of with all its vicissitudes,
] has a balance of happiness greatly in its fa
! vor. i lie work, we are informed, will after
j a short time be put to press.”
