AUGUSTA HERALD.
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 16, 1831.
AN Election for five Justices of the
Inferior Court for this .County, will
take place at the Court-House this day.
A few weeks ago, says the Democratic
Press, “two laboring men on their way
to work, near Morrisville, saw a large
bundle in the road, which they took up
and carried to one of their houses.
When the information was communi
cated to the gentleman for whom they
worked, he made them fetch the bundle
to iris house.—lt was a large Mail Bag,
which, with its contents, it is supposed,
would have weighed a hundred weight.
It remained in the house until the next
day, when a neighboring Post-Master
sent for it. If such carelessness be
tolerated all confidence will be lost in
the great public channels of conveyance.
We should be gl id to hear of a change
in the head of this department.”
COTTON.
The value of Cotton (says the N. Y.
Advertiser,) grown in this country as
given in our paper of yesterday, cal
culated at fifty dollars a bale, amounts
to twenty-five millions of dollars. But
few persons comparatively in our coun
try, have a correct idea of the immense
yalue of this staple article.
In our Review of the market yester
day, we stated the imports of Cotton
into this city for the last eleven months
were 81,194 bales, it should luve been
91,194,
.Vat) 7 Board. —We learn that Com.
Bainbridge, Com. Tin gey, Capt. Evans,
and Chaplain David P. Adams, are
appointed Commissioners to examine
Midshipmen who are candidates for
promotion. The board will commence
its session in New- York.

The United States schooner Non
such, Capt. Turner, which sailed on a
cruise from this port a short time since,
has put into Newport in great distress,
having experienced a tremendous gale
of wind, which carried away b til her
masts, and otherwise disabled her. A
lieutenant we understand, passed thro’
this city yesterday, on his Wiy to
Washington from her,with the particu
lars. We did not learn that any lives
were lost. [N. Y. Adv.

Five cases of disease at James’ slip,
of what description is not known, were
reported to the '■* ew-\ ork Board of
Health on the 28th ult.- The whole
number were taken sick on one night.
It is conjectured that the disease Ins
arisen from local causes, iwo cases
of malignant fever in other parts of the
city have also been reported. [lbid.
* Eight deaths ocitu ‘red by malignant
fever, at Wilmington, N. C. during the
week ending the 29th uit.
It is a remarkable fact, that many of
the fruit trees on Long Island, that
were nearly stripped of their Iruit by be
gale on the 3d ult. are now in blossom ;
t!iat is, the blossoms appear on the
limbs ou the south side ul the tree, and
some ol the Iruit that was left still re
maining on the north side. M e have
not witnessed this singular phenomenon,
but the fact is commuuica ed to u» by a
gentleman of veracity, who resides at
Jamaica. [N. • Gazette.
A country member of the legislature,
was asked by one of his constituents,
whv he never spoke in the “ House.
« My dear friend,” he replied, “ where
there are so many speakers, there ought
to be at least one hearer.”—-It is not
often that an assemblyman makes so
pertinent and so laconic a speech.
The following advertisement isliteral
ly copied from a New-Jersey papei:
“Tobe sold on the Bth ot Juiy, one
hundred and thirty-one suits at law,
the property of an eminent attorney,
about to retire from business. Note
the clients are rich and obstinate.”
A very b'eautiful girl, aged nam
ed Annßaine, of parents,
lately made application for a bed at a
public boose in •Moorefield’s, London.
Not rising in the morning, the land
lord went up and burst open her door,
and found her in bed apparently in a
fit of insanity. She was secured and
kept until her mind appeared to have
become tranquil, when her attendants
having left her alone for a few mo
ments, she opened the window of her
chamber, and jumped out, a height of
50 feet. She died immediately after
wards.’ She had been disappointed in
marriage. .

A PRINTER’S SERJMON.
The following Sermon seems to be the
production of a person acquainted with'
Scripture to the very Utter.
Curious Sermon —Geo. W ashington Webb,
solicits the serious and candid attention of
eacli of his customers, who are indebted to
him for more than one quarter’* newspapers j
to that portion of Scripture, which may be
found recorded in the latter clause ot the
Bth chapter of the gospel according to St.
Matthew —“ Ray me what thou owest.’’
In discoursing trom tuese words, it is the
intention of the preacher to iiiaae no divi
■ sion of his matter—to have nothing to do
with notes except bank notes ; and to treat
the subject neither logically, metaphysically,
nor scripturaliy, nor religiously, nor moral
ly, nor physically ; but peremptorily /—As
lie has a mortal aversion to long winded peo
ple, ever since lie began to collect newspa
per accounts, he will be as brief as a lawvei ’a
summons, and leaving Ins lexl to explain it
self, come io tile improvement.
Beloved brethren ! Hearken unto me and
attend to the words of my mouth ! Pay the
Printer quickly, when thou ai;t in the way
with him—lest at any tune the Printer de- ,
liver tby account to the attorney, and the |
attorney biii g thee before the judge, and j
tin-judge deliver thee to the officer, and
thou be east into prison. Verily 1 say unto
thee, thou shall by no means come out
thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost
tarlliing.
