AHEPOBT has been circulated
through this country, since the
death of my friend Lewis L. Ham
mond, who died at the house of
Woody Jackson, Esq in Oglethorpe,
| on the last day of August, on his
way to Augusta, that l had claimed
and taken away several hundred dol
lars belonging to hint, as well as his
horse, which report originated from
the false and cruel insinuations of
Mr. Shadrack Bogan of the Kog-
Mountaiir, to Mr. Jackson and others,
at the time of Major Hammond’s
death, and have since been kept in
j motion by James Kid of Gwinnett
county, and Lewis Klsey of Edge
field, South-C&rolina, after they knew
th it the report was entirely unfound
ed— lbe following certificate willfl |
hope satisfy the public of my inno
cence, and at the same time explain
the motives aud principles of the au
thors and propagators of the report.

y announces to the publie, that he
did commence on the 2d of duly last,
to erect a town named Hamburg, in
South-Caroliua, oppngite Augusta,
on the Savannah river, and has suc
ceeded with the aid and assistance
of his friends, to erect 78 buildings j
among which there is aware-house
of So by 300 feet, for cotton and to
bacco ; also a spacious and conven
ient building 50 by 70 feet, for a pub
lic house, and a number of spacious
stores, some of wh:ch are 40 by 60
feet, all of which are calculated foi*
different brandies of business. The
stores and ware-house are from 2 to
3 feet above the level of the streets
in Augusta, and considered perfec iy
safe from all damages of freshes.
T! > ware-house ranges up and down
the river, w ithin 80 feet of the river
hank —3o stores are fronting the
ware-house, in the same direction, be
tween which there is a street of 200
feel, intended for a market street, By
the construction of the ware-house
there will be no expense of dray
age. There is a good and safe boat V
lauding at present, and substantial
w harves will ere long be errecled lit
facilitate the loading and unloading
of boats. The ware-house is also con
sidered free from all danger of fire—
and two more are now huiiding of the
same dimensions, and in the same di
rection on the bank of the liver, ia
which there are departments calcu
lated for close storage of Salt, Gro
ceries, Iron, <|’c. There is also a
Post Office established, out of which
letters ean be received earlier than/
in Augusta, and whieh will be kept'
open two hours later than the office
tlue, which will afford groat con
venience to merehauts, as they can
answer their letters by the return
mail. There will also be a saving
of sales at Auction of 2 to 3 per cent,
less than in Augusta. The rate of
storage of Cotton, Tobacco, «Sj'c. is
about half the rates as charged in
Augusta. In about one quarter of a
mile from (he river* the ground ele
vates about 60 feet, which affords
handsome and healthy situations for
summer residence, on w hich there are
a number ol springs of as good wa
ter as this country affords. 2500 bales
of cotton have been purchased and
stored in the ware house from 29th
October to the 23d inst. and goods
have been sold in proportion,' There
is also commenced a spacious build
ing alculated fur a church, to which
libeeral sum has already been sub
scribed'.

tention of the citizens of Soul li-Curo
lina,Norlli-Carolina mid Tennessee,
and nature having done mifeh for it ;
if assisted by ait, the undersigned has
not. the smallest doubt it will become
a place of great, importance.
